Here in the States, so many surplus stores that you could actually walk into & shop have gone by the wayside. We've got about a dozen well stocked internet stores, and shopping those & comparing prices can get you some deals... i.e. USGI Aviators canteen/flask (half qt/1 pint) I was able to get mine, brand new unissued for $2.99 ea. Other places want as much as $11 ! Decent Euro/Brit surplus is sometimes found on eBay. Nice video

I have an old Bivy which is great. It could probably do with some TLC. I have cleaned the mud etc off it, but can you recommend a reproofer? I know that you did a video on reproofing a poncho, but the bivy is breathable. Would you use the same stuff?

You need to make another video now. Lol. Buy 3 more Bashas. If i am correct, the bashas should snap together such that 2,3,4, or more bashas snap together.. just my guess. Like a big 6Mx6M square or line of basha tarps.

I payed for my Dutch military sleeping bag fl. 25,- about 25 years ago. Nowadays in winter i add a summer Nomad bag inside it cost me €25,- a couple of years ago when i started feeling the cold more. A raised bed with debris beneath it did wonders. I also use a surplus military cutlery set or the Göffel replica both are between €5,- and €10,- in the surplus store. The Göffel i use with the Dutch surplus mess tins the cutlery set with the German mess kit.

Being here in the US I got an entire US MSS a few years ago off of eBay for under $60. You just have to look. The black sleeping bag had a few small burn marks in it but it didn’t effect the integrity of it & I’ve used the system going on 9 years now all 4 seasons…..

After watching your very informative and entertaining videos I've not only learned a lot but after watching your vid where you recommended dog dish for a plate I went into a local charity shop and found a dog bowl a bit scatched but it can be polished, then in the same shop a biscuit container both in stainless steel, I just need to fashion some wire for hanger for that, both for £3•50 both lighter than my trangia pan and cheaper than billy can . Many thanks.

Nice video. I have the DPM Basha, DPM Bivi Bag as I prefer it in my local woodland, which has lots of shadows, it blends in better than the current MTP pattern. Also a 58 pattern bouncing bomb kip bag, which is the sort I was issued with. Yes, I know by today's standards that are lighter, etc. But, my 58 kip bag has never failed me in cold temps, especially when using the basha too. A very nice review of "Bomb proof" kit.

Another excellent, common sense video. The constant advertising pressure from companies ( and You Tube Gurus) that only super expensive kit is suitable for an overnight in the woods, is the obstacle to overcome. " Playing about at Bush Craft" that comment made me laugh, that's all it is really in truth though, and selected surplus kit allows folk to actually get involved without breaking the Bank. 👍

Good Morning Neil .. 👍👍👍Another good one .. thanks. Your reviews on Budget Bargain Kit is always a worthy read. Kit that can be accessible to all at reasonable prices. Yes, you nailed it in mentioning a difference between 'bushcrafting' and ultra-light hiking .. distance covered. 'Bulk and Weight'? I'm 72 with 'kaput' knees and hips feeling their age .. both ably assistend by arthritis 😏. On not-so-good days, I cart my stuff in a 'shopping trolly' (the ones that get pulled along behind one). Being fortunate to have the Rhine and my local Forest within a 150m radius of where I live .. and with an extensive, well-maintained highway and byway Walking / Trail Network on hand, easy peas 😊. I'm currently mulling over getting myself a 'cart' to carry my gear, thus being kind to the hips and knees. The commercial 'Outdoor Trekking' ones tend to be pricy so, more mulling to be done on making my own. As a kids we made plenty 'go carts' from scrap wood and pram wheels so .. Just an idea for those who find bulk and weight an obstacle. Don't carry it .. cart it! Am looking to more from you please, in this genre. Take care ..

Great advice! I started out with quite a bit of military surplus gear and I'm still using most of it at times.. For short forays into the woods it can't be beat. If going on a multiple days hike in the mountains, it's not the best option due to weight. One has to bear this in mind when making plans.

I just buy individual elements - main meals, all day breakfasts, peanut butter sachets, cinnamon/maple syrup buns - cheap in job lots on ebay (who cares if some are officially out of date, I'm pretty sure if stored well they'll keep for years more) and supplement them with other stuff I buy separately e.g. trek n eat biscuits also biscuits brown (for old times' sake), small pate portions from the Polish shop, bacon grill from Iceland (also for old times' sake) and all kinds of other stuff, to make up my own ration packs. For example Cadburys' hot chocolate sachets from Tesco are cheaper than army ration pack hot chocolate sachets.

Great stuff Neil My only niggle with the MSS was trying to put the summer bag inside the medium bag, made it too tight to get into. However using the summer bag as a quilt over the medium bag all inside the bivi was perfectly fine.

The patrol bag is supposed to go over the heavier bag, that is the way it is designed. And goretex bivy cover over both. Used them extensively in the Army, bought two sets for my son and me. Slept like a baby in the winter in the Sierras using the system with the issued pad under, in a snow trench. As well as using the patrol bag in Iraq, in milder temps.

The one that they could use and combine to cross creeks, rivers, climb down steep embankments, etc. I believe that they had a loop at one end, and a toggle at the other. That would be greatly appreciated, Sir. Thank you, in advance. Keep up the great work !!!
