More body rust & door hinge repairs // 1957 oval beetle

Today we cut more rust out of the 57 oval and start working on the doors.

Weird weather! Glad it is cooler rather than hot, makes working in the garage so much easier. Of course it is perfect weather here too but my son brought home a kindergarten disease (a cold) and got me and my wife sick. I did make some progress yesterday on my double cab even though I felt like crap but today I might need to sit this one out. Great work as always!

Great job. Can you lay your hinge template on some paper and outline it and scan it as a PDF so we can download it and make copies. That would be a very helpful tool.

I'm sure a skim of filler is all that was needed and not new steel 😂 Seriously though I hope the Brazilian repair panels fit OK. I'm 4-5 hours deep at present trying to make a Brazilian heavy duty inner panel fit my 1959 Bug door. The C channels were U shaped and not sqaure like they should be, the profile of the upright sections is way off, there was some additional hump in the bottom instead of being flat and the hinge inner strengthener panel doesn't line up with the hinge holes plus the rivet recesses weren't deep enough 😵‍💫 I've also used 1/4 inch stainless CS bolts with washers n nyloc nuts to replace the rivets as there's no way to compress the rivet without a 10 tonne hand held press. Also, I folded an access flap on the A pillars when fitting seatbelt plates and wish I'd just cut a section out as the flap left a pretty decent hollow in the B pillar when folded back down.

so far so good with the panels, yeh I guessed the rivets are a no go, went with bolts.

Great content! Whats that coope spray youre using, is it a primer, rust inhibitor, weld through primer, can you paint over it? Oh, and i really like that pillar brace idea, might have to steal that method when i replace mine. That a part you made or did you buy it?

Yeh its a weld though primer, the hinge template was borrowed from a mate 😉

Good day I bought a 73 standard beetle the car never been restored I searched for rest there is no major rust only surface in floor pan and big hole in the battery try my question is both doors have a big gap from top to bottom identical I don’t know what’s the problem
