The first videos of yours that I watched were the "for peanuts" videos about cameras and lenses. As a beginner in film back in 2000, those were MUCH appreciated. Not everyone has multiple hundreds of dollars / euros for the new Pentax, Rollei, or Polaroid film cameras. For a new generation of enthusiasts, we need to be reminded of our options. Thank you.

What I enjoy seeing is vintage equipment, the older the better, but relatively inexpensive. Leica and Hasselblad won't ever be in my kit, unfortunately. Using older lenses on digital cameras, too. I'm not really a fan of point-and-shoots, though. Terrific channel.

A series on the great cameras would, I think, be very popular. When one thinks of the 60s - 90s so many manufacturers were working to either reduce the size of their cameras, add features or push the tech as far as it would go, that a series on the “greats” would be terrific. Or do a poll of cameras to review. Really enjoyed this one.

I like photo walks with the equipment you're testing. Create your own photo projects so that lenses are used with different compositions than you've done in the past. It's fun to see photographers achieve their own goals. Review film stocks as well as your favorite stores where you live, or you can reach.

Ideas? How about a series of videos to help disabled photographers? I'm disabled myself and and find it nearly impossible to walk unaided. I'm surely not the only one like this who subscribes to your channel. Clearly a long term project (which I guarantee has not been covered by any other photography channel). Perhaps: Week 1 - Equipment related to dexterity/budget. Week 2 - Locations and travel. Week 3 - Indoor/home projects. Week 4 - Relevant associations and/or local groups, and so on. Many disabled people are virtual prisoners in their own homes with neither inspiration or motivation. I for one would greatly appreciate this if it could be done.

I’ve been a real fan of this channel, but I admit I’ve skipped a few videos recently, since they featured newer gear (I still use a canon DSLR, so the newer mirrorless lenses are less relevant for me). I’m a big fan of your FSU camera content - I’d love to see you talk about some of the more obscure FSU lenses and cameras (like the Salyut, Droog, Zaria, etc.) Excited to see where the channel goes!

I look forward to your videos. Thank you. Ideas for topics: Lens hood for Jupiter. Lens hood for Leica Sumatar. Accessory view finder for hot shoe (for us people with eye glasses). DYI view finder made from disposable film camera. I like Nikon and Fuji, but your niche may be older lenses. How about DYI replacement of light seals in cameras? How about accessory filters to compensate for old lenses that have no coatings? Visit more swap meets or old cameras stores. How about on video, start to finish with one roll of film? Load, shoot, develop, scan, share. Talk more about your modern, digital cameras that you use with the vintage lenses. Buy a dirty, old camera and make a video just cleaning the thing. It sounds like I want to put you to work. I just enjoy your videos. Thanks,

I genuinely enjoy your videos, I have myself been shooting for more years than I care to admit I think one thing that many people in many fields take for granted is some of the more mundane fundamentals that we build upon, and just kind of assume everybody knows. Given the time of year it is, with students going back to school, you might find videos geared to film and photography students, and for people new to film photography, might search well. videos highlighting aspects of composition, elements of design, how black and white photography helps to develop understandings of balance of light and dark, positive and negative space, lines, textures, depth and form. I think you could do well with a series that does a course to follow with shooting projects, and give the viewers a # to use when posting their work on social media, for each project.

My first classic camera was an early Leica III with a couple of lenses, all in mint condition I bought in a junkshop in Croyden in 1981 for £12.50 on the way to boarding school in E.Sussex, still in my small collection. I have shot hundreds of rolls of film in it and it is still mint! Had it serviced by Leica once in the late '90s and it's still going strong. Only other bargain I've found was a lovely, and I think one of the most beautiful cameras ever made, is a King Regula IIId, also in mint condition, for $20 in a thrift store here in Alberta about a year ago. Having had two bits of great luck myself, I love videos about thrift shop hunting! Just wish I had a better hit rate, 2 times in 40 odd years is not great! I am always looking for great cameras on a budget so would also like any videos about classic cameras and lenses on a tight budget!

I would love to see some episodes that center around the history of the great cameras of yesteryear. I am particularly enamored with Nikon and I have a about 20 Nikkor lenses including the some of the latest Z mount lenses. I also am nuts about shooting film. I use an Epson 800 Flat bed scanner. It is pretty expensive; but I develop and scan a lot of film so I think it is worth it. I've also figured out a way of controlling dust. I use a nitescape blower like the ones you recommended on your channel. I blow off the scanner, then the plastic negative holders and then the negatives themselves. I still get tiny specks of dust; but it is very manageable in post. Best of luck and thank you for all the great work that you do.

I’d be interested in the classic camera evolutions - I know nothing about Nikons, for instance, having just settled on Canon(AE1) back in the 70’s. But I know they are equally fine beasts. I’ve finally got to play with Canon’s F1 and EF but the experience has just served, for me, to reinforce just how usable the AE1 (still) is. YMMD.

OK, further to my post regarding an idea I've had. How about audience participation? "How can we do that?" I hear you all shouting. Well, how about loading a cheap point and shoot camera (one of the £5 wonders that Nigel seems to find) with a cassette of b&w film, all those who want to participate in the project send Nigel the postage cost of receiving and returning the camera, and each participant takes one photograph on the roll and returns it to Nigel for onward shipment to the next participant. This means that only Nigel has the list of names and addresses, and at the end the film is developed and scanned and the images appear in a future episode. I don't know if this is a feasible thing to do, but it would make great viewing IMO seeing what each participant shoots.
@matthewneleigh5672 ай бұрын
I originally came to his channel for the vintage lens reviews, and I've gotten a number of very nice lenses based partially or completely on your vids about them (most recently a CZJ 50mm f/2.8 that I haven't gotten out for testing yet- my first actual Zeiss-built Tessar!). I think at one point you had added larger collections of photos you'd taken while walking around with those lenses, and I enjoyed that quite a bit. The vintage camera reviews are good to see, too, though admittedly I'm less likely to watch those if only because I'm more interested in lenses (which I tend to adapt to digital bodies) than cameras. I've also been less likely still to watch the vids where newer equipment is reviewed, unless it's notable for being a newly-built but accessibly-priced re-implementation of a vintage optical formula (Tessar, Sonnar, etc.). Admittedly there's been more competition for my time lately so it's rare that I don't occasinally skip a vid from any/all of my subscriptions, so some of my own reduced viewing is not because of anything you've done at all.

A very nice feature on the MJU II is the focus AND exp. lock. This is an often overlook feature. But if you use it with that, I mind it will give you much more options. The SX 70 probably just had some rusted battery contacts. Take a look at the contacts from the front if no film is in it. A fix to that would be to glue small Piece of fine sandpaper onto the contacts of your now empty film box. and then put it in the camera a cuppel of times. after doing so your sx70 should work fine again. Blow out all the Dust and get some new Film. You can shoot the much easier to get 600 Film with it by using a small fitting ND Filter. The topic of Film scanning is a Rabbit hole in itself... For 35mm Film the best Way is to use a good Camera and a Makro Lens or an Enlarger Lens with some Makro Bellows. Get the Nikkor 80mm 5.6 EL (60€) a m39 to m42 adapter (2€) and a M42 Makro bellows like one from novofelx or something, I got mine on a local flee market for 10€. This Combi will give you amazing results for scanning negatives! It helps a lot if you got a copistand but you don’t need it. Just use a tripod. All you need now is a light source and a way to hold the negative flat. The cheapest way to do that is by using your Phone as the light source and something like a negative carrier form an enlarger as a way to get the negative flat. If you want to have an easier Time, get the Digitiliza from Lomography. I own one. It’s okay, it works, and with the antistatic brush form the valoi 360 System (40€) it’s a good combo. But it’s not the best Quality... If you don’t mind the Money, get the Valoi 360 System! It’s much nicer. If you own a good digital Camera and shoot mostly 35mm Film, get the Lomography. If you shoot mostly 120mm Film and within it 6x9 or even something like 9x12cm or 4x5`` Film, get a good flatbed Scanner. Epson V700,V800, V850 is the way to go here. You can make it happen with a camera but everything over 6x7cm is easier on a good flatbed scanner. The topic of views on your channel, well I think it’s just simply very niche content. Something that works here is to have a clear series. Every Monday is Zenography Day. And what always works is, if you can win something. So may by there is a way to sort out something like that. You make an episode about the Olympus Om Series and there is a Way to win a OM1. And there is a way to win a Camera every week. I think this would give a good boost. Cheers
@DethronerX2 ай бұрын
Looking good, Sir, nice lighting. Speaking of scanning, if I didn't ask before or you didn't already talk about it, instead of scanning the film, would you give a try to exposing it to a larger photographic paper and then taking its digital photo, for online sharing or just showing us the exposed image itself? I think, for still photography, it's a nice way to get a good digital image from a larger copy, than the tiny film. And you can even sell those prints, if you like.

I would like to see side-by-side shots of old lenses vs new or one make vs another make - eg all the old 50s vs a Sony 50mm (or whatever you have), just so we can see the differences, the character, the out of focus, on the same scene(s). But keep it going!

As you're looking for suggestions I'd be interested in more information and opinions on the films you use. For example you mentioned you used Foma 100 in your Mju and as I've never used it I'd be interested in what you think of it, how it compares to, for example, FP4, grain, latitude and all that sort of thing. Do you develop your own b&w film?

I worked in Advertising in London back in the mid 80's and the office's SX70 was a fabulous tool and useful for planning photo shoots, especially product shots. Back in those days if you went for studio shots, the photographer would have a polaroid back on his Hassleblad which would give us a thumbnail idea for the actual film shots. I think as money is tight for so many and the market pushes mirrorless, there's going to be a lot of classy old gear on the market which hopefully will stay largely affordable, I think there's plenty more ground yet to explore.

I now digitise film using a lightbox (an LED one which cost about £20) and a macro lens. I'm very pleased with the results and also the speed and convenience, all of which are way better than any of the several scanners I've used in the past. The lens was a bit extravagant at £600 but you could spend that on a scanner. The upside is that the lens can also be used for other macro photography, which is something I'd like to get into at "going forward" 😄 Obviously there are cheaper alternatives: macro extension tubes for ordinary lenses or older second hand macro lenses for example.

The predecessor to this camera, the Mju (aka Infinity Stylus in the U.S.) was also a one-hander. In my opinion, it's a more attractive camera, with a more symmetrical curved appearance. It had a f/3.5 triplet lens instead of the faster tessar in the Mju II.
@GeorgeK3562 ай бұрын
I like the photos that you take to demonstrate how lenses from the past render on modern mirrorless cameras but would like a more in-depth explanation of the ethos of the image, why and how you decided that that was the image to show what you wanted from the lens, plus some of the images you took which fell short of your final cut. I also like the occasional walkabout you do, if you remember the "Haywain" shoot, that would be good with more explanation of what you saw and why you decided on a particular viewpoint for the shot, maybe again with some images which fell short of the ideal. Apart from that the channel is just perfect for me, I like the lenses, the cameras, the "hippy" side of the introspevtion that you sometimes do. I have a couple more ideas which I'll expand upon in another post in this thread (as I do tend to ramble on a bit) 🤣🤣

I'm very interested in Nikkor lenses. I'm trying to figure out which of the older F AIS lenses are sharp enough wide open for modern expectations. But that's an expensive topic certainly. I also just bought an XA camera, but haven't used it much. I was a big fan of the mju, but, sadly, my copy is broken. Also, ideas for you might be to sum up your reviews in a pdf that you could give away free in exchange for an email. It's always good to have a way to contact your viewers directly. I don't think you would need to make a pdf for every video. Perhaps just one for soviet lenses, rangefinders, vintage lenses that work well on a Sony. I'm always trying to remember your favorites. Would love to have a list. I can only ever remember the CZJ Pancolar.

Hi Nigel, been watching your videos for a long while and am a subscriber. Due solely to you, I purchased a Fuji X-T1 with the 15-45mm ( since replaced with the 18-55 ). Have quite a few Nikon dslr’s and lenses but I bought the Fuji and love it. Thank you ! I have two adapters for manual Nikkors and auto G lenses and love the results from both on the Fuji As a constructive criticism of your recent videos, I find them a tad long compared to ones a while ago on individual cameras or a same focal length lenses . The one on the Olympus Mui being an example ,. Compare it to other models and brands that can be found rather than spending quite a while on one camera. After talking about a camera for twenty minutes or so, I find myself clicking off and watching something else. Anyway, just my view. Keep the videos varied rather than just on one item like you used to.

I did it for a living, so picking a favorite shot out of 12 to work on is no big thing. The whole roll? Pay me. Much better to get an enlarger and print your own. And of course then you'll make your own contact sheets. Idea for the future? Show off the history of where you live.

And best of luck to anyone who tryes to fix that camera these days. I still got a Mju1, which actually has a bigger viewfinder. And better shutter button 😉 BTW, if you shoot Mju2 (and any camera of that Mju series) in the sunlight, it's a really rare occasion that flash will fire, rather, you'll have to force it (3x depressing that little rear button?) if you say work in the backlight. But I agree, for us that know something about photography, those settings that are forced upon us are annoying. And last but not least, the prices that are demanded for that camera these days are ridiculous...
