I think you are right, looks like too much throttle. With highsides you usually touch the ground with one hand first at an almost straight angle between the arm and the tarmac, this is causing the knuckle protection to dig into the top of the hand, it has nowhere else to go. Had it when I highsided on diesel. But if not for knuckle protection I'm not sure if I would have my left hand fully functional after I have been pushed onto a roundabout. My hand got trapped between the bike and the tarmac. Carbonfibre knuckle protectors were flattened with holes through in highest points. I have stopped before the roundabout to give way to an oncoming van. Passat driver behind me thought I was riding onto the roundabout and was looking at the oncoming van only. He floored it because he thought I'm no longer in front of him and he will manage to get onto the roundabout before the oncoming van. I had front and rear brake on with my left foot on the tarmac when he has hit me. He basically drove up the rear wheel and launched me onto the roundabout, when the weight of the car pushed down on the tire. He has split his front fender, radiator and bent the sides of the front inwards, while the engine bonnet went up. The bizarre thing is I rode the bike to work no problem, with handwritten cardboard reg plate while the car looked like it hit a tree at 60mph. Rear subframe of the bike raised up by about 10 inches though. It was the luckiest moment in my life so far. I don't think I would be alive if he would hit me before the van went past, I slid across 3 lanes of the roundabout being pushed by the bike with my hand and leg under the bike. Got trapped between kerb of the isle and the bike with the bike also being on top of my left arm and left leg. Knuckle protection saved my hand, my SIDI boot saved my ankle. I always rode in full leathers and always will... Sorry for the wall of text ;]

1 thing - Tyre Temperature vs. Tyre Pressure. Most people who ride on street tyres have around 2.5 bar in the rear tyre (measured when tyre is cold). Taking this to a track and pushing really hard means, that the temperature is rising very quickly, and since you can't beat the physics, the pressure is rising aswell. For that reason you will be very soon riding with an overheated and overinflated tyre. That is not a problem when going straigth. But cornering on the edge with an overinflated tyre means much smaller contact patch thus smaller grip, and then highsider happens. I also do not use tyre warmers so I always let out some of the air from the rear tyre before I go on track. I begin the first track session with pressure around 1.9 bar (tyre is cold = ambient temperature.) Then I start to build the heat and pressure carefully. At the end of the first session I go a little bit harder - but still carefull because the tyre might be already overinflated at that point. Stopping in the pits I immediately measure the pressure when the tyre is still hot. If I was driving hard enough on a warm day, the pressure might have risen to 2.6 from 1.9 pretty easily. So i let even more air. My goal is to have a tyre, which is around 1.9 when HOT! That means that after coling down you really have it pretty soft. Now you might think that it doesnt seem right, but it is not from my imagination. I got this advice from an Ohlins certified susspension mechanic owning his own racing team. Also what racing with a softer tyre means is that your softer tyre can literally "hug" the road much better - which means you have MUCH bigger contact patch. And bigger contact patch means better grip. Of course the exact pressure depends on your suspension setting, type of the tyre. Maybe 1.9 bar would feel too soft for you and you will feel better with 2.2bar. I also know about giys riding with 1.7bar. So you have to find your correct setting by yourself. But my point with this comment realy is about realising what can happen to you when you do not care about your tyre pressure at all, and then you start riding it hard on a trackday with 2.5(cold)bar tyre. If you still do not believe me try to google "motorcycle tyre contact patch" and see how small the area actually is, and imagine the difference in contact patch of a 1.9(hot)bar tyre vs. 2.9(hot)bar tyre at full lean angle. The difference might be well over 50%. ...I once forgot to let out the tyre and went on track with a 2.5(cold) bar. The nervousness of the bike was really bad. I also have to point out that I have a pretty firm rear spring on my bike, so beeing on a softer rear spring might meen you want to be higher - lets say 2.3(hot) tyre. But please do not make that mistake not to checking your tyre pressure immediately after every session so you at least are informed about what is happening with your pressures, so you have a chance to spot the case where you would be riding with 2.9bar on the rear. That is really not very safe.

I'm pleased that you got off so lightly even though it is painful. I've no doubt that your smaller injuries are due to the fact that you have knowledge and know what to do in this matter. I wish you well and hope you feel better soon.

Given the impact your body took and the speed you were moving when you hit the deck and started sliding, the shots of your leathers afterwards are good example of why its worth wearing leathers or armoured textiles when riding on the road. Great video.

This is why you don't push limits on the streets, guys. It's much dirtier and covered in oil and coolant compared to a track, you can't always see what's coming and it can make you crash badly.
@dougelick83979 жыл бұрын
I learned this lesson on an easy, slow hairpin turn I had taken hundreds of times before. I didn't notice the oil spot and BAM, out from under me she went. My gear saved me from any serious damage aside from a nasty looking pinky that was between the clutch lever and bars as the bike hit. It was "just" my old '93 Nighthawk, but it's a horrible feeling to bend a bike you just fixed up. Treat all public roads as if they're sketchy - they are!

Thanks a lot for your typically instructive video and your honesty in sharing. I too had a trackday crash (much lower capability and lower speed) however my own earlier model Drift cam only gave me video of that particular session and no audio at all. It also must have had a buffer and did not store the actual crash itself sadly. I lost the front end on braking.

That sounds about right. I went to a suspension specialist at Cadwell Park yesterday and he's confident my preload was WAY too soft on the rear (he had to crank it up 3 settings on the spring. He commented that at that speed, the tyre would have compressed way too easily causing a lifting of the tyre on the surface and said he thinks the suspension was a contributory factor. I think maybe the combination of worn tyre, suspension AND the early throttle added up to the crash.

I can't believe this, I JUST did this on May 24th at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. For the exact same reason. Running an older tire, too much throttle at too much lean, rear stepped out on me and I chopped the throttle too quick, bars went into tank-slapper and literally threw me off. Bike then continued into the left barrier, then again into the right. I might also have broken a rib and my leathers look just like yours!!! Glad you came out ok, mate. Oh, I was on a 2009 Aprilia Tuono ;-)

Good video and analysis. Get well soon. Just my twopennyworth - I've always found on a high side that to save it the best thing to do is only shut the throttle half off. If you shut it fully off then you get flung off - with just half off you can usually keep going straight and hang on when the less violent regrip happens....

Glad you didn't get hurt worse. Useful info about the tire history. In my training, I've been warned/instructed about tire heat cycles, loss of grip, etc. I'm not a track rider, but do take my road tire condition very seriously, especially with a new (used) bike with unknown tire history. Got an '08 ST1300 at end of August. The PR2 front probably had 2k miles left, but I put on a new PR3 to be safe (new PR3 on rear recently before I got it).

Glad to hear you are okay. It did look like you saved it from the rear. I've seen two videos where pro racers saved a high side. Neither stayed on the seat, but both appeared to refuse to let go of the grips. I did just have a thought. If when the rear end stepped out, instead of cutting the throttle, what if one were to apply the rear brake instead and hold the throttle where it is at or only reduce it a little. I've only been riding a year so forgive my lack on knowledge.

First let me say that I feel for you and hope that you have a speedy recovery. I was in an accident of my own two weeks ago. I was run off the highway at 55MPH by a lane changer moving into the fast lane in cramped traffic. I used way too much rear brake, fishtailed, and when I realized I was about to highside, I grabbed more front brake and was able to push it down away from traffic and into the median. Couple of broken bones but nothing major or requiring more than an emergency room visit.

Concerning Knuckle protectors @2:25 I had a pretty nasty lowside after a car caught my rear wheel on the road. If I didn't have knuckle protectors I wouldn't have three stitches on the back of my hand; compared to the five inch scar on my arm from the titanium plate I'm not honestly bothered but it would have been nice not to have to (and I mean this literally) empty the blood out of my glove.

Where it did one long recording but you could press the button to "highlight" parts of the clip that are interesting. Perhaps even if it just wrote a text file onto the memory card like: 00:32:32 of when you pressed the button. Digging through all the long files is a pain...
