Hello Kara! I've noticed that since adding to my shop announcement "favorite my shop for flash sales" that my shop faves has significantly increased.

I really enjoy the consumer psychology behind marketing and sales. It helps me understand what I fall for and what I can do to push a few more sales. The grocery store thing irritates me, I knew they did that, but moving things around drives me mad lol. I don’t care about a new brand or sale if it’s something I like, I have food sensitivities, so I don’t change my eating habits that often. Buying goods like clothing, electronics, etc. well I used to fall for the flash sales or there’s one more item left! And I still get lured in by “free” shipping, but I think for me and others I talked to we know it’s factored in rather than see an additional price that may shock us at the end. It’s easier for me to budget that way if it makes sense. Of course, I get for big items shipping can’t always be “free”, but for smaller goods I don’t mind a seller offering it in the price. I think most consumers now know that shipping isn’t actually free and we’re just so used to it being the norm now because of Amazon lol. The favorites things is a great idea! I’ve been including text in my photos about materials, dimensions, shipping, etc. but I wouldn’t have thought to make a favorites graphic! That’s a great idea.

Great video! One thing I do with photos of vintage jewelry I sell is, if relevant, include text for things like 'sterling silver' or the brand if it's a well-known one. I think it helps. Funny, throughout high school, I was all gung-ho about going into advertising as a career....until I read 'Subliminal Seduction' lol. I was shocked and discouraged. Not nudges at all, but thinking about influencing consumers made me remember that :-)

There are nudges and influencing all over. I'm terrible to watch tv with because I tend to scream things like "DID YOU SEE WHAT THEY JUST DID" at the tv.

@@KaraBuntin That's hilarious. If I remember correctly, there's an example in there illustrating the fear of missing out vs. the pursuit of gain in relation to a PhD student having to pay their professor $50 for every week he didn't complete a certain amount of work on his thesis. I may be misremembering the details, but having a monetary value tied to accountability, despite being negligible compared the gain of getting his thesis in on time, motivated him to never miss a deadline. Quick off-topic question - do you know if it's against Etsy TOS to invite users to follow you on Facebook, Instagram, etc? I was thinking about having the last photo be an invitation so users will stay associated with my brand even after leaving my pages.
@KaraBuntin2 жыл бұрын
You can do that, you can't explicitly tell people to buy from another platform, but social media follows are fine as far as I know.

Regarding the "Only X left in stock" nudge, this actually often puts me off of buying. It may not apply to online purchase, but the psychology for me seems to carry over from physical shopping. Basically, any time stock starts to run low, I find those few items left are the ones that wouldn't have sold unless the item was scarce because they are the leftover mishandled and abused items that everyone picked over. "Only X left in stock" makes me feel like I'll be getting one of the dregs. Thank you for the book recommendation. I think it will offer a lot of value and no, I'm not changing my bear avatar that I've had forever just because you think they're stupid. I love my bear. :P

Good tips!! Etsy can be very subtle like "FREE shipping". Free is all caps...shipping all lower case. Just noticed this the other day. I've seen sellers list reviews as one of the listing photos. While I thinks it's probably a good nudge or subliminal social proof, do you think it's necessary to ask for permission to use the reviews? Thanks!
@KaraBuntin2 жыл бұрын
If they’re posted publicly then you don’t need to. I would use the first name and an initial though.

A little confused. I go to the mall and in any given store there are all the time weekend sales or spring sales or monday sales or something sales… why is it wrong to have “ all the time “ some sort of sales as long as is not always the same inventory?
@KaraBuntin2 жыл бұрын
It's okay in a legal sense as long as it's not the same inventory, but a lot of Etsy shops just put their entire shop on sale all the time to get the "on sale" badge, and that's illegal. As far as customers go, people get "sale-fatigue" where they know that certain stores always have a discount, so they're trained to never buy anything at full price. So that's not the best strategy overall.

Add a star - in photo or listing itself???
@KaraBuntin2 жыл бұрын
On the photo. That was just an example. You could put 5 stars like a review on the photo if it’s something that has good reviews. Or a little “ships free” text on it. I put my logo on all my photos and “ships free” right at the front of the title in some of my listings.

I didn’t it know marking prices up and putting them on sale is illegal 😱…
@KaraBuntin2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's deceptive advertising. I used to work at a department store in Massachusetts and the state have a ton of restrictions about how long things had to be offered at full price before you could run a sale. Each state has its own laws, and there are federal laws about it too. I know that there are laws in different countries that are really specific, too.
