I do not think that this little girl liked what she was doing as well as the horse. She may be as forced to do this activity as the horse. Her facial expressions is not happy and looks scared to me by her look over her shoulder at the trainer. Some parents live through thier child, which I think this may be a case.

I’ve noticed that horses jump much better without riders. When I was in a hunter jumper barn as a kid - winning at any cost - horses were just a tool. As an adult I found Balanced Riding, Ttouch and Feldenkreis - so much better for horse and rider.

KATIE agreed. I was really fortunate to find sally swift centered riding in my teens. It’s helped me immensely through my life with horses from galloping horses at track, fox hunting, jumpers, barrel racing, obstacles and trail riding! TTouch too was hugely popular when I was in my 20s. Doesn’t seem like many have heard of it now 20 years later. While there have always been win at all costs riders and trainers, it’s the norm now. MANY kids are selfish and spoiled these days and horse is just a tool or machine to them. Lots of adults too though same way.

Little "Horror" Story from when I was young. I was at a horrible barn and didn't know how to ride well. Every lesson we had to do side passes (Hope that's the right word) and I was really bad at that. Didn't help that the horse was hardly reacting to any aid (I am absolutely NOT blaming the horse here. It was just ridden by to many beginners that were taught the wrong things.) And every lesson I tried so hard because I knew what would come next. (I was holding back the crying everytime). The instructor would come up to us and would grab the inner rein (bit pulled halfway through its mouth) and smack the horse with a crop for every step (really hard) and I always blamed myself and felt horrible (my parents forced me to stay at that barn if I wanted to keep being with horses) Now I am at a barn that doesnt allow bits spurs crops etc. and I am so glad that I have found something like that

I was way worse than that girl! I rode a horse for about a month, my instructor at that time told me that when she began to run I just had to pull as hard as I could left right left right🤦🏼‍♀️ the horse ended up throwing me off several times each lesson (I wonder why) me and my mom knew nothing about horses so we just did as told:( I also got spurs after riding only a year😳 I felt bad for doing all of these things but I just thought my instructor knew what she was doing😶 I moved barns a couple of years later and at my new barn I actually learned how to ride and handle horses...

I knew a girl where she had her horse in a pasture the fences where 5 foot tall and her horse would clear it and stand on the other side or start to wonder the pasture owner had to tell her to get rid of the horse or she wouldn't allow both her horses to stay there so she had to give the horse to a friend that has 6 foot or higher fences to keep her in her other horse she takes cross country jumping in a hack no Spurs no whip and her horse wants to go at a full run over those jumps she has to slow him down so he doesn't jump to hard and she doesn't take him on anything over 2.5 she raps his feet this horse obviously likes jumping would he like to run around in circles with a bit being kicked and whipped no but some horses are very playful and love to run around and play her horse I believe is 5 I doubt he'll keep it up for many more years but when that happens she will give him a break and just trail ride with him

I was taught that they have thick skin and can't feel it if you smack them or hit them with crops and whips. I never used a whip or crop when riding, but my instructor would smack the horse's hind quarters to get the horse to move. Glad that I ride bitless and without spurs or whips.

Good job! I am a nationally published equestrian photographer who also teaches violin, and several of my students have told me the same thing. Every time, I get so upset that I want to take the crop and whack the girls across the legs, asking how it feels. If a horse can feel flies on their skin, how much more can they feel a whip?

I was recently appalled to learn that, in the mule rides in the Grand Canyon, participants are given a small leather whip that the wranglers call with the euphemism “Mule motivator” and that they call whipping “motivating”. Ride participants are taught that this is absolutely necessary for the mules to constantly keep up with the group and not “space out”; in fact, from what I have heard, participants are told to frequently “motivate” their mules so they won’t lag behind and turn around to go home. Now … what animal that enjoys its job would lag behind or want to go home? The wranglers (and reviews on trip advisor, Yelp reviews) tell ride participants that the “motivator” will not hurt a mule at all and hence don’t be afraid to apply it hard and often. One of my friends recently went on the ride and said the wrangler repetitively slapped his leather boot with the “motivator” and said he feels nothing. BUT … mule and horse skin is NOT leather, and that statement is a belief as old as the Old West and Black Beauty. I have proceeded to examine videos of the canyon mule rides, in which participants are frequently slapping their mules with the “motivator”, and wranglers telling their participants frequently to “motivate”. In one, a mule refused to cross the bridge and pinned his ears back. As Rick would say, too much pressure, and there was definitely something wrong … like a hazard on the bridge. Rather than the wrangler getting off his mule to examine what is going on and instructing the participant to do the same and lead the mule gently across the bridge, she goes over there to yank on the reins while the mule all the more refuses to go across, pin his ears, and even tries to run away. One wrangler then shouts at the rider “Motivate!!!! Motivate!!!! Harder!!!! Harder!!!!!” The woman on the mule proceeds to brutally flog the mule, and eventually, he pins his ears and lunges forward while everyone claps. My heart sank to the bottom of my stomach. I am no animal rights person, and I am not against mule rides in the Grand Canyon, but I must say that after all this evidence and especially after hearing about whipping being necessary and the whips being called “motivators”, I cannot participate in these rides. I’ve NEVER seen whips used in Western riding or on any trail rides … and a simple kiss, click, or chirrup can suffice as a “wake up” or “move it” cue, followed by a pat and “Good boy/Good girl”. This information is not readily available, but if you check videos, TripAdvisor/Yelp reviews, and even a brief mention in an equestrian magazine, you will learn about the “motivators.” Sad that this info is not more public and that most people find out when they are ready to go for the ride; if I found out right before the ride, I would get off the mule, say I cannot do this, and ask for a money refund. Again, if you have full control of an animal and he is not overworked, constant whipping should not be necessary. I have since checked reviews on TripAdvisor and Yelp, and notice I am not alone in my opinion when some horse owners have commented about the “motivators” not being necessary and the conditions the mules live in. I am sickened by this whole thing and would appreciate if more horse owners raised awareness too. Mule rides in the Grand Canyon have been iconic for a century, yet treating mules in this fashion, telling patrons it doesn’t hurt them, and forcing them forward is asking for an accident someday. Indeed, they have not lost a tourist off a mule in a century, but given what is going on, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens in the future … and just because these methods were used a hundred years ago doesn’t mean that they will work nowadays. From what I have seen, many of the mules are in pain … and this should be addressed (e.g. improperly fitted saddles, more breaks between rides for animals, and more) such that “motivating” is not necessary. Indeed, Black Beauty was written for a reason, and from what I have read, heard, and seen on the Grand Canyon mule rides, it honestly looks like something straight out of Black Beauty …. In conclusion, there are better and more positive ways to “motivate” animals to work, and if the animals are being uncooperative, slow, and so forth, adjustments should be made to their care and daily routine such that man and beast will be more “motivated” and safe when descending into the Grand Canyon. Let’s keep treating our four legged friends with love and care … and they WILL work for us!

I grew up jumping..... :( I’m so sorry for the horse I made jump as high as we did. She deserved so much better... now I get friends I take riding asking me if I teach my horses to lower their head and be in a frame and it’s like wow people don’t think horses know how to carry themselves.... the unnatural is normal and natural is abnormal now.. how sad... all I can do I make sure any horse I touch never has to go through that!!

What amazes me is all those people standing there, including the so called instructor, and none of them noticed that every time the horse landed after a jump she stumbled. Wow. That's a clue, people. A clue that either her knees, legs, something is hurting, she's off balance (from having no free rein to use her head for balance), unable to see clearly (again, she's not given her head to use as horses are meant to do), and all of this is actually causing more pain on her legs, knees, feet, etc. I personally wish I could go tie that instructors head back where she can't see, and then whip her until she runs around in circles jumping over obstacles. Smh. Most people don't deserve animals.

Same here, and he loves jumping over logs and small creeks along the trails we ride. In addition, I am training my 3-1/2 year old filly bitless, making it a game and she gets it usually on the second try. If she has days she doesn't want to try or do things she already knows how to do, well that's okay. We end it on a good note and leave it at that!

I can't for the life of me understand why it's so socially acceptable to abuse horses. Transplant this situation to ,for example, a dog learning Agility. Just imagine the outrage if an adult told a child to spank the dog for not going over an obstacle. Think about all the activism that's been done to save animals from being abused at zoos and circuses with cruel training. But if it's a horse? ''It's okaaay, they like it!'' WTF? Protecting children and animals is a duty to us adults and yet in the horse world there are so many adults who actively teach children to be cruel to animals that seldom fight back. once I went to this pony club (I don't go to pony club I see too much force and abuse in it, I was there because I wanted to see what it was like) and at the pony club I saw this kid (boy) that was jumping and his horse came to a jump and stopped and didn't want to go over it, so the kid started to hit and beat the horse with his whip and the horse still didn't want to jump so he kept hitting the horse. my mum and I were talking to each other and saying how horrible it was and poor horse and how I could just go in there now, take the whip and beat the boy. The horse finally jumped and I thought that was terrible that the horse did have to jump because he had to submit to the beating and give the kid what he wants rather than having the option to give the kid a taste of his own medicine. But point is a few months later when we went to go check out a horse we found out that the owners of the horse that was being hit by the boy, found out that the horse had a lung infection and that was why he didn't want to jump. Yeah so that was story time. poor horse.

People who say its okay because horses are made to jump do not know anything about nature or animals. Horses will also occasionally cross a river if there is fresh grass on the other side, does that mean horses are made to swim long distances? Horses in the wild do not jump stuff for the sake of it. If the can, they will go around an object. They will only jump if there is no other way or if they go into flight mode and need to get away quickly. And most obstacles they would encounter would only require a small jump to get over. I would say it wouldn't be a common occasion in the wild for a horse to jump a 3-5 ft obstacle, at a run. Even rarer to do it repeatedly and never with an added 40-80kg on their back. But most riders knowledge of horses only extends to the sports they compete in, and thats all they care to learn about. So when somebody says "I've been around horses all my life" I don't even acknowledge it. It has absoulutley no merit and it is a meaningless phrase. They might aswell be saying " I had toast for breakfast".

Well spoken, Rick!!!!!!! As a nationally published equine photographer, I witness this all the time ... and even worse when they actually swear at the horse as they are whipping it. I’ve never believed in whipping, and have been sensitive to horse abuse since reading Black Beauty in my grade school years. If I catch these people doing stuff like this, I refund the money if they pay me, refuse to photograph or patronize them in any way , and report the abusive conduct if possible. Unfortunately, even the judges are often on the sides of the abusers, but at one show with ten-foot jumps, I witnessed a judge buzz a rider who was viciously whipping her horse after he refused to jump, and she was promptly escorted out of the show ring while swearing loudly. Good judge!!!!!!!!! Hope that barn witch learned from that incident. And another time, I witnessed a horse at a similar show throw his rider, and then come back to viciously kick her in the head. Good job, horse!!!!!!!!!!! And yet a few other times, I have seen trainers actually take the whip and whip the riders across the legs for too much whipping, asking them how it felt. A violin student of mine who was taking riding lessons told me that horses are stupid and you have to whip them to get them to go, that the crop doesn’t hurt their skin ... I was so boiling mad that I wanted to take her crop and whack her across the legs just like the trainers I heard of. My mom’s friend was indeed wrong that horses are the stupidest animals ever, and you know where she learned that? A barn witch trainer her daughter lessoned with. Keep speaking, out Rick! That's how I was taught to ride as a child, it wasn't until I was an adult and researched horse training and horse behavior, that I actually put the horse's needs before my own, and that they feel, and we can form bonds with these beautiful animals. We are blessed to even be allowed to ride them, touch them and love them.

We get ex-jumpers at my barn that people donate for the therapeutic riding program after they are done with them. Them and the two ex-racers have the most health problems and they aren’t even seniors yet. We have senior horses in better condition because they weren’t forced into jumping, racing, or any of the other ridiculous sports.

I used to take jumping lessons (along with other mostly English style riding ‘activities’)…. Like many other kids I did what the instructor said because to be honest they are all quite mean. Once a horse I was riding refused to jump one of the obstacles . The instructor told me to get off and she got on the horse and tried to force it over the jump (to ‘teach’ the horse and myself a lesson), while whipping it continuously very hard. The horse was extremely distressed . It refused and she stopped the lesson and that was it. The real lesson was that this was horse abuse

It's even kind of implicitly assumed that horses don't like to jump. The whole hunter/jumper sport is focused on persuading the horse to do it, and horses balking at the jumps is every competitor's nightmare. So obviously the horses don't naturally enjoy it. The first time I saw a vid of a horse knocking the bar off with its back legs, I thought "Holy shit that must hurt the horse. Why is that allowed? Why aren't the bars made out of something soft? What kind of idiot who claims to value a horse would subject it to having its legs struck all the time during the learning process?"

This why I don't have a trainer. They say they are professionals, ask for a lot of money and show off their competiton winnig students. I was in four different stables in the past few month and all of them had totally bored horses. They didn't react to anything because they were constantly whipped and yanked by the bit. And they said to me to whip the horse harder... hit so hard that it will make a loud sound, it doesn't hurt the horse anyway. So I didn't came back to these places after one single lesson. They teach starter riders to hurt the horse every way possible if it doesn't want to do something. I'm so angry that people pay those "trainers" to teach their child riding. At my hometown I have a stable where the trainers let you figure out yourself a lot of things. They say how should it work and how should I feel, but they don't push me and neither the horses. My horse didn't want to go across trotting poles one time and my trainer told me to go back and ask my horse again. Ask! No beating, no whippig, no yanking. And he did it perfectly for the second try. I learned a lot about comfortable riding and loving the horses.

(reply to someone user named "star gazing" i think) "Its not too hard to tell when they are swishing tail to get after flies or out of annoyance/frustration type thing. Just look at the horses ears and face and body language. sure, she isnt beating it bloody to a pulp or anything, but the horse doesn't look like it is having a good time at all. I loathe horse sports and "events" with a passion. They're a prime example of idiot people making animals suffer because "it looks cute". I hope one day we evolve to realize how useless this all is, plus who actually enjoys watching a horse full of useless paraphernalia running around in circles and jumping over sticks? Most boring shit ever if you ask me. If you want to actually experience horses you should spend time with one in a setting where he's not living in a box or made to do stupid tricks. Look at it interact with other horses, ride it in an open field, actually build a relationship where it is free to choose wether it wants to be around you and not stuck in a 2x2 box with you.

I agree. Not all of us use whips, spurs, etc...a few bad riders have given us all a bad name, and it pisses me off! I was always taught by my trainer to think of the horse's comfort FIRST. so yeah, it's unfair to make people believe a certain stereotype just because of a few bad seeds😔

@@forestp334 especially at such Insane heights. Cross country is even worse. Jumps are even more high and are fixed in place. So dangerous for the horse. One false step and they are done for. Horses are over 1,000 lbs animals and they are not meant to be jumping at such heights.

my old trainer was horrible. my horse didn't understand aids because he was green so my trainer had a fine bit for "hard" horses and made me whip him and always have leg on. she never taught me how to ride with my seat, it was all hands and legs. luckily I had a friend tell me that that wasn't the only way to ride, I left that trainer and I could probably ride my horse without arms or legs now

The other thing most people don't get is that these poor horses are broke long before they're joints are ready. They're broke around 2 years of age. The joints don't fully mature until they're 4 or 5. That's another reason most Race horses and Jumpers break down.

Rick, it's even worse than you make it sound. Kids instinctively know that the horses don't like this, and with any observation it's obvious. Kids who question what they're told are scolded and shot down and redirected. I lost a lot of confidence when I was made to feel like an idiot for not wanting to use pain to "motivate" a horse, and ultimately I stopped riding altogether because of the barn witches in charge when I was little.

Totally agree with everything said. Owning a horse is a privilege and we should treat horses as such. These huge, powerful, gentle animals trust us with their lifes and their health, once we earned that trust. They could just kill us with one kick or crush us. But they are gentle by nature and take so much abuse from some humans, before they act out. It's their only way of saying 'It's enough, I can't take your abuse anymore!' That, or they are tought (knowingly or unknowingly through incopetence) bad behavior by their owners. Using a horse as 'sports-equipment' is such a 'human' thing to do. In my opinion NO animal, wether it is a horse, a dog or some other aninmal, should ever be used for sport. It's the human who wants the competion, the fame or the money, not the aninmal. And too many of these girls, women or men riding dressage, horse racing, or jumping care more about that than they care about what the horse would want or about adverse effect those sports have on the horses (long time) health. Furthermore, many of these horses are kept in stalls/boxes for most of the day or long periods of time, because they could 'injure themselves out on the pasture'. In the sports-world the horse has become an object. If the horse doesn't function anymore, it is sold or send to the slaughter house. You can always buy or breed another one. Sad, sad horse world.

I never cared for dressage. Riding western was my way. Your more free to walk, run & play. I walked around with my horse more then riding. He was so fun. A clown, even with my husband. I was relaxed on him & rarely rode in the ring. He could jump his height which was 18 hands & I jumped a 2' post only once, he never challenged me, either, I didn't like it. Horses only jump in the open field or wild when they have to. You can tell this horse drops his head after every jump. It's hurting him. Too much of what's 'proper' to the eyes of the audience. Too stiff. No spurs, no whip, more fun. Sorry, not my thing. Both should enjoy being together. And, I wore a cowboy hat & boots. Never got hurt.

Have I jumped my horse? Yes. Has my horse refused? Yes. Have I stopped and actually listened to her when she refuses? Yes. Do I force her to jump? No, I simply ask the question I have a very anxious horse who has been beaten by the "so called trainers", so now if she ever feels forced into something she will just either rear or threaten to throw me. The only thing she seems to like doing is working at liberty (basically making everything fun for her) So the people that come and tell me that I'm training her wrong because I am not trying to be the boss, I just let them hop on and 'show me'........ and guess what, they get thrown and get annoyed when I giggle. Even after I warned them... So Rick's methods of riding should be something that everyone does, a horse is an image of yourself.

While I'm learning to jump I have to use a bit but as soon as I have my own horse I'm going bitless. Also I have no plans for doing show jumping in the future but I'm still learning how to do it so I can ride well. To me, it feels like the sport you learn to ride best with for English riding

Be careful when you follow the masses- sometimes the M is silent. It's a disgusting fact of our society that striking a horse even repeatedly is not considered abuse, and bits are accepted even though they cause pain because it's more important to make money and a name for yourself than it is to care whether a living breathing animal with thoughts and emotions is in distress. There isn't a single horse sport that was developed with the horse's welfare and emotional and physical well being in mind.

I hate when people push-button their horses, thinking they are like machines rather than dependable, loyal animals with actual feelings. This video was disappointing to watch, she should have treated the pony with more respect. I know some horses love to jump, and will do anything asked of them just to please their owners, but the pony in this video just seems very annoyed and unhappy. I feel like the pony would be more willing and focused on the rider if it were treated more kindly. Also, that girl has her reins WAY too tight, like damn. This is why I ride bitless with my horses, can't stand them nasty things.

ok Rick I freaking love you and your channel but there are some things I disagree with. I'm not going to get into women stuff because I actually think it's quite funny. I disagree with the fact that you think English riders abuse their horses. Now believe me I know lots of people do however there are meany people, including myself, that don't. I never kick my horse, I don't use spurs, whips or tie downs. My horse comes to me when he is called and we don't have a bond that's just me on his back. Some days I just run around with him in the field. He is stalled only because he is old and a slow eater so the younger horses beat him to that food and he doesn't get enough. He is also trained on voice cues. I used to jump him a few years ago but he is 27 now and I retired him from difficult work. I did a few shows here and there (2 or 3 schooling shows). I just wanted to come on here and make my point that all stereotypes aren't always right.

This is why I turned away from the traditionalism that floods the horse world. I went to pony club for a year and after the way they treated the horses and the way they tried to get me to ‘discipline’ and control my pony I left. The traditional horse world is full of bullshit, physical abuse and equipment made to cause pain in order to achieve ‘respect’. It’s not respect, it’s fear. Learn the fucking difference. How can people like this call them selves animal lovers, if they saw people doing this to a dog or a cat, in respect to beating them with a whip and shoving equipment like bits into the animals mouth just so the person can yank on it, they’d scream ‘animal abuse!’.

I don't know if my horse likes jumping or not. I know she is willing to jump when it's the only way for her to get where she wants to go, I've seen her do it. One time we were out riding in the woods. There was a lot of blow down. I could not judge from a distance if she could step over the one downed tree or not. We got to it and I decided it was too high for her, but she was willing to give it a try. I didn't let her.

My horse jumps things when he's playing or if they're low enough and he wants to get across he will pop over it. But it's still a lot different to repetitive jumping pls with a usually unbalanced extra weight on them too.

My grandpa taught me how to ride horses/be a good horse woman. He wouldn't let my cousins ride the two horses Sam and Taffy, because apparently JC was ruining their mouth's. Grandpa said no whips, no spurs, no abuse. I remember when Jaycee came in with blood and bloody horse hair stuck in his spurs and a whip; grandpa grabbed him by his hair took him outside and beat him bloody with the same with whip Jaycee used on poor Taffy. Poor Taffy had terrible wounds on her sides and her butt. My poor 🐴 horsey! Yeah, in the summer, I cared for those horses. I was the only one, besides my grandpa, who brushed their coats and cleaned their hooves. I bought my horses stuff, not pink or purple, a horse blanket and a brush that was very hard, to get the mud and junk out of the coats, even a new bridle.

I was always taught that you had to be the boss at whatever cost. I’ve grown up and learned differently and my family hates what I think. They’ll argue with me all day about it. Also I had a horse that loved to jump not like this but out in the field jumping whatever he’d find. He was just a two year old colt and that was fun play to him. I enjoyed watching him play in the field running and jumping over logs and bucking and playing.

I'm about her age and I'm ashamed to say this is exactly what I would've done. Or what my former trainer would've told me to do. But I think I need to seriously rethink how I ride horses. There are so many different opinions about whats right and wrong in the horse world and it's so hard to sift through all the crap information and figure out what's the best method. Especially when you're the only horse person in your family. But I'm taking some time to just do my own thing with one really kind and understanding horse. Hopefully I can get back on the right track.

Back then we were tought to be like that...Not to let the horse get away with anything and to dominate him...I now realize that perhaps there are better ways. But The trainers have to stop telling kids that this stuff is OK...Not only that...if you are not hard enough you get yelled at by your trainer and told to do it...when you grow up this way you just believe what the teachers are saying...Riding is not a democracy..It is like being in the military. I really struggle with a lot of the showing world, the horses are stalled for days with little turn out, they are worked by a trainer for maybe 2 hours a week, the owner comes in once a week rides their horse then goes home. These horses get no time in a herd because they can get hurt, most have to be given outlast for ulcers. It drives me crazy.

They may be "bred to jump" -( again people trying to control things) but that doesn't mean the horse likes it, or that it doesn't damage the horse. My off-the-track thoroughbred wanted to race because that's all he knew. It took a long time for me to get him to relax and realize that he didn't have to do that behavior every time he was given his head. And that horse did have major damage to his legs and tendons from being pushed as a young adolescent horse which he suffered with as he got older for many years. But oh oh oh thoroughbreds are" bred to race". It doesn't prove your case, sorry

While I see your point, I don't think it proves anything😂Thoroughbreds are quite a lot faster than a draft. Warmbloods, Hanoverians, etc, are quite a bit better at jumping than a Quarter Horse. Horses can be bred to do things but have physical problems that prevent them from doing so. Same with people. Also, your horse has leg problems because of being pushed at a young age...and chances are other young horses being forced to gallop at full speed would have similar fates-possibly worse because they were not bred to race.

I've actually seen several videos of "intructors" telling little kids to move their horses back to the jump and beat it, then try to jump again. I've never taken show jumping lessons, so I don't know if this is normal, but what in the world is wrong with these people teaching children bullshit like that? When I was getting lessons and would've even tried to whip my horse like that, I would've gotten a beating from my instructor. She would've gotten me off the horse immediately.
