@johnwang99144 жыл бұрын
These lamps were probably never designed as sterilizing wands but just blacklights for say auto technicians for the very purpose you mentioned. Somebody just saw the COVID-19 issue as a marketing opportunity and scooped up a bunch of these barely UV-A lights and labeled them as sterilizing lamps. It's more an indication of a lack of regulation. Just look at the products sold as cold medications in America back around 1900 or even the Whitehouse flouting hydroxychloroquine. All countries will have people willing to scam their fellow citizens if allowed to do so and often the scammers just turn a blind eye to the product and the science so they can claim deniability. Unfortunately it takes government regulation to prevent products like this. We only see more products like this from China because they are less regulated, essentially because they are less "socialist" than the US. We need to be asking marketplaces such as Amazon to better regulate themselves or asking our government's to penalize companies like Amazon for marketing these products.

@@johnwang9914 I picked one up for £3.00 (new & boxed) from a charity shop. The box describes it as an Eyeshield LED work lamp. The magnetic base and does indicate that it is for auto workshops. Made in China" so clearly there has been a half-arsed attempt to re-brand them as disinfection lights.
@johnwang99143 жыл бұрын
@@ThatsViews A bit ironic for them to label the near UV light as "Eyeshield" given that true UV-C light can blind you and of course should not be visible. Of course any plastic near the LED's such as a transparent plastic cover indicates that it isn't UV-C and most likely just near ultraviolet blue light. An actual single UV-C LED would be packaged in metal with a transparent quartz cover and cost in excess of $20 US. It's amazing what people will try to get away with during an emergency like the pandemic, even more amazing what people will accept.

Regarding fluorescein green dye: back in the 60s I lived in Nottingham, and in the past, close to the somewhat polluted River Trent, was a system of emergency fire hydrants (with a red H instead of black) fed directly from the Trent after coarse filtration to remove stuff like dead rats - no further treatment other than the addition of fluorescein to act as a warning. So when a couple of workmen used a standpipe to draw water from one of these hydrants, their tea was a remarkable fluorescent green. Their comment was 'We had worse during the war'.

Clive, I have been looking for a UVA+UVB LED lamp to replace a T5 bulb for my reptiles. No reputable pet supplier makes one but there are tons of them from China with 5 star reviews saying “my pet loves it.” I think they are fakes and anyone buying these lamps are slowly killing their pets. Do you think you could touch on that in a video?
@bigclivedotcom4 жыл бұрын
I don't know of any common UVB LEDs. I'd suggest keeping using a fluorescent lamp.

I’ve seen a very similar circuit in a rechargeable night light. The R7 value was 8k2, not 33k. When on charge the LEDs lit dimly as a night light, but when the downward pointing cylindrical torch style night light was removed from the mains plug charger (or the mains failed) it came on at full brightness.

2:05 Yes it is sterilisable. Wipe it down with some bleach or alcohol! Before doing this you should of course turn it OFF. There, see, it has sterilisation function - an ON/OFF switch!

Great few videos on the LED UVC quackery. I was looking at all of what's out there but will definitely look elsewhere for glass tube styles only. You confirmed my suspicions of fakery. THANX

they have uvc light meters. it'd be interesting to see how much/little light they emit, and compare that to the amount necessary to disinfect
@superbmediacontentcreator Жыл бұрын
The problem is that you made a declaration of fake UVC without using any detection devices as you would do for components. You should validate an assumption using real science, not assumptions with a device such as a UVC meter.
@bigclivedotcom Жыл бұрын
The construction of an actual UVC LED is very specific due to the destructive nature of the wavelength. None of these were UVC.
@superbmediacontentcreator Жыл бұрын
@@bigclivedotcom I understand but the is an audio-visual medium and at least using one of the UVC disclosing cards would maintain your normally high technical standard.

so im a fan love your videos, so i dabble in electronics and i do haunted houses. so a prop i made like 10 years ago has been getting tons of baddly written responses asking if i would be willing to market or sell. so the prop i made was a black light led gas mask, cheap black mouth n nose covering duel filter mask but with black light leds in it and uv paint on the grills. so i keep having people messaging me thinking these are gas masks that use uv light as a filter and recently people keep asking if it will fight corona. if you would like i can send you the link and a couple of the messages i still have

Glad i found a real one wich also produces the unmistakeable smell of ozon. It's like a fluorecent tubelight in the same 8 watt armature with a clear glass tube. It also takes a while to start up. Found it on ebay uk but they are not available anymore.

Just over a month ago I purchased 2 UVC portable light. Just like the quartz you shown in a previous video. Unfortunately the seller was taken off of eBay for whatever reason. I know I have a germicidal type of UVC because I do smell that ozone smell. So at least I have that...

I got this exact lamp, well, almost, mine doesn't have the ball-joint and magnet. It just got this silly lid thing on the end which is just held on by friction (not threads). I was wondering what that was for. I suspected it wasn't UV-C btw, which it claimed on the website. I was just curious about it (also bought another which is UV-C).

ANY uv source that doesn't need shielding will not be able to sterilize on any sort of reasonable time frame anyway... and any source strong enough to use as this device is intended would cause permanent eye damage pretty quickly.

As a rule of thumb if the light isn't a Fluorescent tube it probably isn't UV-C (unless its very low output or really expensive)

Got a whole bunch of UV phone sanitizer boxes and they appeared to have gold UVC LEDs x4 and UVA LEDs x3. Well the wavelength was 365nm for all 7 LEDs SMH. 😢 The real UVC LEDs have a very dim blue visible light and will make the phosphor in a florescent tube glow bright orange or red. The fake ones will be dim purple or blue.❤
