Great video sir. It would be lovely to find a roman or hammered coin every time we go out but as every metal detectorists knows 99% sh@@...And that 1% chance of something nice. True metal detecting a pleasure to watch. Ian and Connor.... YBD

Thank you. Yes you are totally correct we all spend our time digging foil, shotgun cartridges etc in the hope of finding something good. Trouble with me is if there are no signals at all after a couple of hours (even rubbish) there is nothing to keep me interested and I get bored.

This is the problem with organised digs, the organisers just find land, any land and it matters not whether that land has been changed and back filled or anything else, they just find as much land and charge £15- £20 per head for the privilege of finding some bits of scrap metal, and that is if you are lucky, 80 people turn up, they pay the farmer £150-£300 and are left with a nice tidy income for themselves thank you very much. You can maybe tell that we are not fans of organised digs, they have their place for beginners or people with no confidence to speak to landowners and get their own permission, but tbh the bad things about group digs outweigh the good.

Thank you for your comment. When I first started detecting I joined a local group (now disbanded as organisers moved away) and was with them for quite a few years. To be fair they did find some good land and I had many great finds. Towards the end though they started going back to the same old fields and the odds of finding went down. Since then I have secured my own permissions but as they are all arable they are all in crop. Sometimes you just get desperate to get out and that’s why I have given these two local groups a try. As you rightly said some of these groups do no research and just grab what ever land they are offered and there lies the problem. You also never know the exact location until the evening before, giving little or no time to research the land. Like you I am not really a great fan of organised digs these days but at this time of year sometimes it’s worth the risk……but not always.
