I genuinely wish you did longer videos too. Once every week or two? Podcasts can be 3-4 hrs and people, including myself eat it up. I listen while Im using the bench grinder or organizing the shop. I don't even have the words to articulate the amount of knowledge you have. I'm "the guy" when it comes to tools for people who know me but the amount your teaching me is insane. I would watch hours of your content. It doesn't all need to be brand new, exciting stuff every week, it's not just the information, it's the way you deliver it. You almost have an obligation to the world to put out as much as you can 😊 Thank you for what you do. Genuinely appreciate it

I have no interest in spark plugs, however that Edison Spark plug is a fascinating piece of history. I was so curious I looked up when they were manufactured - from the late 1930s to the 1940s by the Edison-Splitdorf Corporation which was a subsidiary of Thomas A. Edison Inc.

Wow, what a mosh, good episode today. That really stinks about the entrenching shovel. I have my fathers from when he was in the service. I got it just in time it seems. The nut spun a little bit so I just kept spraying it and running it in each direction to stop. It slowly worked its way further and further. Its good to go now.

I appreciate why you did not take that light home. I also would have had to pass on it. Much too big and too little room for storage at my place. It is a shame the nut on the shovel is rusted shut, but as you said, aluminium and steel is not a good combination when allowed to rust. Dave.

Great mosh and really enjoyed the entrenching tool cleanup and info. Back in the fifties there was a great army surplus store in our town and every birthday, Christmas, etc. We got items from there: helmet liners, canteens, gas masks, web belts and so on. I still have my entrenching shovel which I take camping. Unfortunately it's the shovel with the little cross piece on the wooden handle and can't be modified for hacking roots but I've used it continuously over the the years. It still has it's canvas cover. Made to last. That chandelier was a beauty.

We had those entrenching tools(ET) in 1976, in the Army. A couple of years later, they went to the trifold ET. I found that 6 months of PB Blaster on a bleeder nipple did eventually free it up. Maybe you should soak it for a few months. I've still got a 40 year old tube of nitrostan and its banana smell, Last time I used it was 4 years ago. Good Luck, Rick

What a great treasure hunt. The stuff you find on the poor mans flea market is so cool. If you look at the shovel blade closely you may find a manufacturers name and date. Mine says Ames and is dated 1944. I inherited it from my WW2 veteran father. Fortunately the nut still works, and I wonder if spraying a little white grease into the threaded area would help prevent the galvanic reaction.

That threaded part is a bear, thankfully I have been able to free the two I have. I think the last one I heated then sprayed with 50/50. It didn't loosen all the way so I put it in a container of transmission fluid and it finally broke free. I have a terrible time with vehicle parts that are aluminum bolted to iron or steel. Cost me a transmision and transfer case on a Toyota truck and I spent two days on my Grand Caravan trying to seperate the CV joint from the hub and aluminum housing. Not done yet, I have everything out and need to go to a friend to see if it can be pressed out It is costing me a hub assembly I didn't need, 2 three jawed pullers and a piece from my porta power. That piece was cast so it's not great, but those pullers are built with the wrong threaded rod. This is a common problem that many professionals have and why the mechanic I use him and hawed about not wanting to do the job. All because of a ripped CV boot. Road salt on steel is bad, bad on aluminum too. Add the three and you have a nightmare.

I have a hard time getting rid of them because they are so expensive to buy new, but I have probably had them almost a decade already (boy where does the time go?) and they are still hanging there. I should just donate them to H4H and if I ever need anything like them, I can just go to H4H and look for one. It will be reasonably priced there. Man that galvanic corrosion is tough. You're right about not be able to free it up. The newer garden hoses have aluminum couplings on them so after a little time goes by they end up like that shovel. Some hose manufacturers anodize the ends a shiny brass color so you don't notice. They are like a crooked politician. I guess anti seize needs to be used. Frustrating! Good find on the nails, but I have to share a story of when I was doing Apt Maint for Mpls, MN Public Housing back in the early 2000's and we found a coffee can similar to that that also said "nails" and we too thought wow pay dirt. Wrong, little did we know the old resident was a EDP person, and it was almost 3/4 full of toe nail and finger nail clippings. I still have nightmares to this day when I open an old can or something......just thought to share. hehe

quick story, my father who passed had about 20 cans of nails screws and whatnot in the basement. Each one had about $100 cash in the bottom, he figured no one would steal a can of worthless nails. He didn't tell my mom about it, luckily we dumped a can out before she gave them away to a neighbor!

Some nice finds there. The big pick handle reminds me that I need to get one to make stock for two large hammer handles and one medium hammer handle. Have same US GI e-tool that was rough and frozen as yours. $1.00 flea market find. I just stayed at it with much oiling and easy pressure and it eventually cleared up. Linseed oil on the furniture, wire wheel and OD paint made it ready for war again. There should be a date and makers mark on the front blade of the shovel. Mine was Amboy or Ames? 194?. It too was corroded so i couldn't lift anymore letters or numbers. I did scratch up the nut a bit but not badly, used a file to tone the scratches down. SC, I have done dozens of full restorations on vintage fans from the 1920's. 30's and 40's. I have NEVER had one yet that was more than a broken wire, clogged gears, or frozen bronze bushing. I have never encountered a broken motor. I did have to hand make a brass gear once by hand when I could not find a factory gear, and it works like a charm!

A few years ago I was active in tube amplifier electronics building & repair. I put an ad in the local paper advertising "I buy old tube amps and hi-fis". I actually got a superb Radio Craftsman mono amp that I bot for $20 and sold for $600 but I also got a full garage of WW2 radio gear. Probably 2000 tubes, most in NOS cartons. Unfortunately, they had been in that hot dry garage for decades and merely touching the neat colorful cartons they were in (like your spark plug) caused them to disintegrate. I got a kiloton of tradable stuff out of that garage. Other than that.....I'm an old New Jersey scrounger much like you, Scout, and the number of times I have actually been able to utilize found treasures, I could have paid list price for them and had them delivered by chauffered limousine for the amount of space they took up. Most of it ended up in the trash or better still, hauled off to the dump where I paid a dump fee. Chandeliers, not socket sets! Ah well, it's a fairly low-cost obsession.

Like everyone is I am jealous of your free flea market. Sorry but I would have made three or four trips. That fan looked right up your alley. $40 bucks worth of axe/pick handles, OH MY! I would still be grinning. Your army shovel is great. Good to hear that even SC says enough is enough once in awhile. Love your videos. Thank you.

Just a little info on that e tool, it's a 43 model, or m1943. If you look carefully it will be stamped with the manufacturer name and a date. WOOD manufacturing or AMES being the most common amd 1944 or just 44 being the most common. That aluminum collar nut is best left alone as you have discovered. The color spec is OG 107. I've collected those for years and at least yours in the open position os still functional as garesning shovel if ever needed. Kudos from the south.

Every Sunday evening I take a drive around my neighborhood as Monday is trash day. A few weeks ago I found two containers filled with nuts/bolt, taps and dies, drill bits and 4 stepper bits. There is probably close to $200.00 worth of tooling. I can't understand why anyone would throw that out.

After watching this episode I went digging through all my stuff and found my old entrenching tool. Fortunately the shovel was opened and that made it a lot easier to get a grip on the aluminum nut with some Kroil Oil and vice grips with hot wax on the teeth plus twenty minutes of work the nut is free. But it is a little dinged up. It was a fun challenge, thank you.
