What sucks is that the two Gorillaz comments didn't even care to mention any deeper cuts beyond the singles we were SUPPOSED to latch onto. If you want deep cuts from either TNN or Humanz, give a listen to Souk Eye or She's My Collar respectively. Both of them are SO much more interesting than the singles listed and actually bring up the intensity that was missing on the singles.

I feel like I'm the only one who loves The Now Now. The roadtrip aesthetic is so so so good, and every song is very solid and cohesive. I think Gorillaz is at their best when it is cohesive and feels like there is a progression and storyline throughout the album. When I'm listening, I can so vividly see this cross country road trip taking place, and i feel like I'm sitting in the tour bus with Damon as we drive through the vast expanse of the Midwest and Western states. I guess it helps that I went on a road trip with my family in Colorado, and the vibes were just unreal! This is my 3rd favorite Gorillaz album.

I know some of the songs are a bit all over the place tonally, but honestly I didn't even know 21st Century Breakdown was considered one of their "bad" albums, there are songs from the album I still key up on occasion. Although I suppose it did precede Uno/Dos/Tre and it's been downhill ever since so maybe there's an argument it was the beginning of the end but Iunno where one would make that claim tbh (and truth be told even if Green Day gets progressively worse each album there's usually still a song or two I end up liking so hey.)

Owl City is probably my biggest guilty pleasure, or at least a close second to Limp Bizkit. And it’s mainly because, like you said, it’s basically The Postal Service but worse. TPS only made one album, but it’s been one of my favorite albums since I was a kid, and probably the best electronic album ever made (you can fight me on that). It has this dreamy yet simple sound that I’ve never heard in any other album. I really wish they stuck around for just a little longer we got at least one more Postal Service album. But since that might never happen, Ocean Eyes is the closest thing to it. It’s nowhere near as good, but there are some songs that I genuinely love and listen to all the time. I hate Fireflies, but I really like songs like The Tip Of The Iceberg and Vanilla Twilight. It’s very serviceable in my opinion, but that’ll have to do. Also, The Now Now is my favorite Gorillaz album and 21CB is awesome, what are y’all talking about?

@@Sommatix it definitely is victim to being the direct follow-up to American Idiot. When it comes to Blur I would recommend Parklife for a reaction, "13" is also about as good as Parklife, and judging by the comments on this video, it seems that that's the Blur album people want to see you react to. and for a Clash reaction you should do their self-titled debut (UK Version) which I think is easily their best album. Parklife is the go-to Blur album. Boys and Girls, Tracy Jacks, This Is a Low, Badhead and End of a Century are all really good songs on their own, and the fact that they're all on the same album is kind of amazing - some of them are bouncy and jovial, others are very moody. Going from the song Parklife to This is a Low is night and day - fantastic album, and probably the most cohesive point to start from (though I actually like their previous album, Modern Life is Rubbish, a little bit as well). Their next album, The Great Escape, had two of their last Britpop-inspired singles on it - Country House and Charmless Man, both of them very bouncy and wacky and just a good time. But like how Parklife has more of a synthy, dancey oddball on it that pushes Blur's range beyond Britpop, you have songs like Stereotypes that feel like Damon pushing boundaries and experimenting with different sounds and stuff. Though Stereotypes might not survive multiple listens, it comes on very strong. Beyond that, I won't elaborate - though every album tends to have one or two solid singles until Think Tank. Except for Song 2, which afaik was always a total piss-take on brainless jock jams before it was adopted as the universal brainless jock jam, I've enjoyed just about every Blur single. But in my opinion, Parklife is the best place to start and listen onwards - Parklife will hopefully pay dividends, though you might need to stick to the singles and give it some time to sit. It may also be worth going back and listening to Modern Life is Rubbish at some point, though maybe not right away. For Tomorrow might be a bit grating, but I'll be damned if the chorus isn't one of the kookiest, catchiest choruses in their entire discography.

I mean that’s kind of the point. Noel and Liam Gallagher wanted Rock Music to be popular and didn’t like the grunge movement. So they stuck to their roots using influence from The Stone Roses & The Beatles, made catchy choruses, and it worked amazingly well especially in the UK. In my opinion their debut is their best and I enjoy that sound much more than the rest of their albums.

A serious Blur fan here to spread gospel about the discography and recommend albums. I decided to share a short history, hoping you'd go on the complete journey. But even if you don't, this should help you pick the albums you're interested in hearing. Leisure is by the vast majority considered to be the weakest Blur album, with several highlights and a consistent style that falls flat for most people, especially compared to the rest of the discography. The three albums that followed are often referred to as the "Life Trilogy", with "Modern Life is Rubbish" setting foundation for what Blur would end up being, while simultaneously pioneering heavy experimentation with guitar pedals a few years before Radiohead's "The Bends" was released. It's one of britpop's first records. "Parklife" is considered the greatest album from this era, spawning multiple hits that further propelled Blur to the British mainstream, and featuring all around great songwriting utilizing Coxon's imaginative guitar playing for the purposes of creating catchy, often sarcastic in tone, but always distinctly British pop music delivered by the genius that Damon is, complemented by various weird synths. Alex's and Daves' contributions are not to be overlooked either, it's just that their roles are supportive for the most part ("Girls and Boys" being one of the exceptions). "The Great Escape" took another step forward, attempting to reach new sizes, that were only "harmed" with what some consider somewhat weaker songwriting then the previous two records offered. From here on, Blur are a moody alternative art-rock band, releasing glitchy electronics decorated "Blur", months before Radiohead were to drop the behemoth that "OK Computer" is, not necessarily (in truth probably not at all) influencing them, but still pioneering. "Essex Dogs" for example is pretty obscure in the best of ways. This is when Blur's short-lived American fame began, due to the success of the grunge parodying "Song 2". Slowly but surely, the sound of the records starts to come closer to Gorillaz' early work (it's pretty much incomparable if you have just this album in mind, but taking the evolution into consideration it's an important stylistic shift). "13" is the album that I feel you would end up liking the most, as it might be Blur's most innovative and experimental moment, as well as the moodiest/most atmospheric one (you'll probably hate the "unnecessary" length of the opener though). This (the recording of the 7th album) is where Graham Coxon departed from the band, who now as a three piece came out with a for the most part thematically (?aftermathically?) Iraq war concerned album, "Think Thank". For me it's still somehow distinctly Blur, while containing most of what made early Gorillaz. Graham and Damon renewed their friendship, and the complete band made a new album many years after the original break up, while "stuck" in Hong Kong. It had all the right to eat ass, but just doesn't. It contains mellower sounds then most of the art-rock era records, and somehow feels very Hong Kong-ish to me, whether optimistic or gloomy in it's atmosphere. Hope you end up liking whichever record/records you end up listening to!
@chronicallyunstable
@chronicallyunstable 2 жыл бұрын
Correction: Alex (James) and Dave (Rowntree). Also, Graham left the band around 2002 (minor correction). That being said, I pretty much agree with your write-up. 13 is a masterpiece of a record (heck, best thing Damon has ever worked on IMO). The emotional vulnerability is on full display here, and the varied and chaotic yet surprisingly cohesive and well-flowing track listing make for a mesmerising listening experience. It's like the opposite of Mardi Gras: in both cases, tensions were high among the band members, yet the end results couldn't be more different in terms of quality. Their brit-pop material is a must as well, Parklife and Modern Life Is Rubbish in particular. Alex's basslines on these albums are killer (Colin Zeal, Pressure On Julian, Girls and Boys, for instance).

London Calling, Combat Rock either one are straight fucking bangers. Train in Vain, Death or Glory, Lost in the Supermarket, London Calling, The Guns of Brixton, Brand New Cadillac, Rudie Can't Fail.... Holy fuck I mean London Calling alone needs to be listened and reacted to. It's a band that will never leave me man. My reasons for liking the band amongst loving their first few albums immensely and the sound and variety in sound of songs; It's sentimental too. Lost in the Supermarket is just a full and heart warming song and relatable growing up in the working class environment I was raised and used to with my family. I won't go deep but the band is VERY stand out. Special place in my heart anyway, for sure.

while i do agree that ariana’s positions is a pretty sexual album overall, i wouldn’t say all of it is centered around sex tbh. to me at least it’s much more about her finding love again after going through some really traumatic events, and the insecurities and wishes that come with it. and especially pov imo isn’t a sexual song AT ALL (and despite the trap beats i think it goes in a more r&b direction in comparison to other songs on the album). but great video brad! hope you feel better soon

I found that positions and The Weeknd’s Dawn FM had a lot of similar themes, but they were both received very poorly, even in their own fandoms. It’s terrible how people think an album is terrible just because the artist’s last one was more “depressing and serious”. Both positions and Dawn FM are meant to be about making sure those events don’t happen again.

Another song I really like on Encore by Eminem, as a guilty pleasure type song, is "Rain Man." The beat is hard and like you said, it's a dumb throwaway song but Em is so brilliant lyrically that he still manages to put lines together that other rappers could only dream to put into their own real music. It also touches on the usual topics that he's been joking about since day dot (Superman not being able to walk, etc), and while it can get old, when done in proper hilarious Eminem fashion is nothing short of solid entertaining experience. Definitely recommend. But yeah, other than that, Ass Like That and the two stand out songs from that album you mentioned, the rest is ass.

Even though I’d love a reaction, it doesn’t matter if you record it. But you got to listen to the clash the other albums are so good, that it makes cut the crap even worse. Like these dudes that might as well be gods in our eyes, just released absolute garbage. But their master works are still very much listening too, because they ended up inspiring a ton of people. MIA sampled them for her paper planes.

Nothing Above, Nothing Below by Death Spells. I listened to it because it was another Frank Iero band on the list of mcr solo stuff, and even included the pianist that had worked with mcr, prominently with Black Parade. The first few tracks are really hard to listen to a lot of times with screechy instrumentals and over the top glitchy shit, but man, when Quaainterlude transitioned into End of Life my jaw was literally on the floor. That was the moment I got up and said "THAT'S THEM. THESE ARE THE GUYS THAT WROTE SLEEP", and my interest did actually manage to carry over afterward, especially with Fantastic Bastards. It's a strange album but dang does End of Life HIT

You should do a video on great songs that build/change up tone and or structure over a long track time with a large grandiose conclusion. Songs like Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, Free Bird, One--all follow a great progression of slow melancholic rhythm with emotional lyrical delivery into an increasing instrumental layering and eventual change in tempo and into a large musical swell. Artists have continued to make these progressive epics to this day to try an capture a "magnum opus" of sorts within their styles and look to blend in several aspects of what they are sonically known for. My personal favorite of the newer songs like this is Strobe by deadmau5. You're perfectly able to capture both sides of his more atmospheric musical nature as well as his house/techno dance progressive side all into a masterpiece of a 10minute track

Leisure is underrated, pretty decent songs on there, the madchester sound works great and in particular the shoegazy elements on she's so high, Sing and You wear me down, maybe the best song on the album. The album has its flaws perhaps, but idk, it's flaws that I don't mind that much, like maybe the lyrics are not super deep or something, and they would evolve with every album. The high point is 13.
