To compare... Capaldi's first series was really awkward. I was used to the boyish facade and the dark overtones from Matt Smith (which made a lot of sense after Tennant) but what annoyed me about Smith was the flirting, constantly. I was happy to see that trail off with Capaldi. Tennant's Doctor was, as Smith's Doctor later said, with vanity issues. He had a crush on everyone woman he came in contact with until he lost Rose. After getting used to Capaldi, who became a serious powerhouse, I rewatched everything from S8 and realized (with the exception of some filler episodes that felt weak) it was actually quite good. There was some nicely scattered subtle dialogue and presentation that really described the character's personality progression in a way that takes a second look to really get properly. Jodie's Doctor is the same. The writing feels different, I agree. What I don't agree with is that it's "crap". It's just more drama and suspense to overshadow the science fiction. That's actually quite fine, because if you look at what Moffat did... well... he almost ruined it. He closed a lot of chapters and made it hard to continue or expand on any of the previous stories. He also leaned pretty hard into the Star Wars feel on many of the episodes and that just felt a bit too campy to watch. We do, however, have 3 main things to thank Moffat for: The River Song Arc The Weeping Angels Giving 9 a solidified story Having the first year with Jodie being so different and "randomized" actually made sense to me, because this is a completely new person. Go back and watch "World Enough And Time" & "The Doctor Falls" again. There was a LOT of letting go that Capaldi's Doctor had to do, and Jodie's Doctor is a proper representation of that. Yes, filler episodes are still apparent (Arachnids felt sort of cheesy, Kerblam! was halfway decent but felt unfinished, It Takes You Away ended like a comedy), but I really liked most of S11, and "Resolution" was just VERY well done. Daleks became actually scary again. It gives you a good idea of what the Doctor has retained since Capaldi's speech to himself, ending with "Doctor, I let you go." It seems like a pretty natural evolution to me. I don't think people that like a show for a long time can even still truly call themselves fans unless they really strap in for the long ride. Some of it's going to feel out of place, but it is what it is. Deciding to hate some episodes is even fine, but writing off a completely new series... well, it's obvious there are other reasons than the writing. I just think it's not something they want to admit. Many of them want more of the dude romance or the heavy Star Wars influence they were starting to get used to. Or the elder who was overly energetic for his age, like the old school Doctor once was. Many of those same people complained about Bill Potts, too. Big surprise. They may like the show, but a fan is not the same as that. Anyway, this is my assessment. I know how writing and filmography works. I do think Moffat was a unique and special storyteller, but we're into a new set now. I think S11 got weak in the middle (yes, with the writing), but the last few episodes have been quite exciting. They truly could not have picked a better Doctor. Capaldi is probably my favorite. Tom Baker is my second, but Jodie is quickly starting to move up in line with Tennant, who is my third favorite. Let the fans enjoy it. We love criticism more than you might think but we really don't appreciate childish insults with no context. To anyone who actually read this: you da real MVP.

Very well said. I’ve always felt like series 11 was the show trying to take it slow for a bit, before starting on what is said to be Chibnall’s 5 year plan for the show. Stand-alone stories to give the show a little bit of a break from the complicatedness, before starting to build to something big. And from the looks of the two part opener for series 12, that seems to be the case indeed. After having given the show a bit of room to breath, it feels like they have set up something really big and have started to dive into the history of the show again (which was already a bit more visible in last year’s New Years special). And while I’m by no means series 11’s biggest fan, I think some of those 10 stand alone stories were amazing, and the Doctor and her companions have really grown on me. I was genuinely excited to see them all back on tv last week for the opener of the new series. And like you said, most Doctor’s first series seem weird and different. And out of every new Who Doctor’s first series, Jodie’s is neither my favourite nor my least favourite. But yes, when we go back to them after having seen more of that Doctor, we see more that we like, because the style is familiar by that point. The only two modern Doctors that I liked from their first series were Eccleston and Smith, yet Capaldi is my favourite Doctor, even though his Doctor didn’t “click” with me until he rode in on a tank in the series 9 opener. Things have to change in a show for it to go on for as long as Doctor Who has, and of course it takes some getting used to those changes. But that doesn’t mean they’re bad changes. I just feel like there’s this one very conservative group of people on the internet, who are hating on this Doctor because she is a woman, just like they’re hating on many other female led progressive tv shows and movies. They’re very vocal, and take over the conversation with their screams for the Doctor to “finally regenerate” or for Jodie to get fired, leaving no room for the people with genuine criticism, those loving the show and those still getting used to the change to discuss our differences in a civilized way. But sadly that’s the internet these days I guess. It’s good to know the rest of us are still here too.
@ChrisPhoenixMusic

@@eline.de.allerbeste Yup; it's the kind of show that isn't easy to understand immediately. Newer Who fans (like those that came in during Smith) have been used to "easy" shows most of their lives. S11 was a bit easier, as in each episode was standalone, even though it still required some history knowledge of the show to appreciate. I always liked programming that took some understanding to really get. Because I have familiarity with some science studies, this is among my favorite shows of all time. I liked all aspects of the show (for the most part), but I can't expect every episode to be a home run. Agreed, this show needs to constantly try new things to stay fresh, and that is exactly what it's doing.

This does make sense and being a newer Who fan ( been watching for only a few years) I think that the writing has gone down hill since capaldi. It’s just my opinion and I have watched classic Who too. (Loved it!!!!) Jodie’s character is great but I just think there’s more that she can do. She hasn’t reached her full potential yes and I’m so excited for when she does!! X

@@amelie5086 Different writing approach doesn't mean bad, though. I love classic Who but some of the acting at times was really awful, and the writing was a bit too simplified some of the time. I liked the story line underneath. Every series / season will have filler. It's always been that way. With all the slow starters we've seen it won't surprise me if S12 turns out to be a huge whirlwind. It's already been really exciting, so I'm interested to see how S11 ties into it.

It would be phenomenal to have River back, but unfortunately it's unlikely to happen. When we saw Capaldi and Kingstone in that last episode, it felt very final and like the end of River's story. It would be nice for her to have an appearance, but I don't think hopes should be up. However, having watched Spyfall Part 1 as it aired yesterday, I can say that Chibnall appears to have listened to feedback and improved his writing, so maybe he'll decide to be really nice and give us some River.

@nebulonicc 4 жыл бұрын
I think you forget that river literally had 24 earth years on darillium. She could've slipped off during any of that, stolen the doctor's TARDIS, maybe had a secret vortex manipulator, who knows? And with the fact that time is technically relative, she could've had so many more adventures before her eventual end with Ten. It would be so easy to have her back.

I would love to see Alex Kingston back, unfortunativerely, with her there, it would only show just how just unsuited Jodie is to being the Doctor. They really needed someone with a similar personality and demeanor as River to convincingly play the Doctor. Nothing against Jodie, as she has been fantastic in other roles she's done, but she just does not have the right demeanor that the role of the Doctor requires. A big part of what was wrong with her first series as the Doctor was the writing, true (a lot of times she came across as just another companion on her own show), but a big part of making a role successful is the actor themselves. Peter Capaldi also got stuck with a lot of horrible scripts, but he was able to work with them and still stand out as the Doctor. A big difference between her an Capaldi's scripts though, is that she has been saddled with WAY too many companions, so it makes it harder for her to stick out.

Agreed. I truly enjoy Whittaker in the role. I also enjoyed most of the first series she's in but some of those scripts really needed a polish. I like the daring approach to themes and marrying the old with the new but the overall execution falls flat and that's SO not Whittaker's fault in my opinion. I put the blame at Chibnall's feet. It's his vehicle. He's the captain. She's a focal point and many will wrongly blame her, but the show runner makes final decisions. Whittaker's just the messenger. Her job is to take direction and not to give it. I really enjoy her in the role. I just wish she had more Shakespeare quality writing and less paint by numbers. If it's not on the page it's not on the stage.

It needs to be less POLITICAL literally every episode of the first season she has was political. Not to mention it makes the rosa parks one seem like a joke, when it was an arranged protest, and she wasn’t even the first to do it. The donald trump one didn’t give a valid reason to dislike trump, just shown his babyish attitude and eccentricities. It literally shows that you dont like him because he’s very very bad, and you wont say why he’s bad he just is. The witch episode had SO much potential and SHOULD have brought back the witches from Shakespeares play. But, nooo its a new alien that looks fucking stupid. The alien on the spaceship one again had the chance to be scary similar to the empty child and how claustrophobic you felt in the hospital but instead the baby yoda looking ass was comic relief

But Adult Lift Skills is a brilliant and funny film. Definitely one of my favourites. I love that she insists on getting the routine correct for the TARDIS taking off. At the end of the day, Jodie's Doctor is shaped by Jodie in much the same way as her predecessor's versions were shaped by them. There are basic characteristics to remember, but everything else is up for grabs. And that facility for change and adaptation is what could make this show ultimately timeless.

Yeah. It's why I can't watch Broadchurch anymore after seeing her as the Doctor. (not a knock on the Whittaker, she's amazing in what I've seen her in) It's just her Doctor is so joyous and cheerful, that honestly you don't want to anything to break her hearts. Which given the endings of 9, 10, 11 and especially 12, it would absolutely gut me seeing this Doctor go from optimistic to wrecked.

I'm loving S12 writing, for the most part (some cringe still around). Plus, the casting for the Master was PERFECT. Comparing to Jodie and....he was such a better casting choice for his role than she was for hers. I'm not saying she's a bad actress, just a miscast actress.
@Sofia-gi5xr
@Sofia-gi5xr 4 жыл бұрын
Matt Evans She has often showed that she is a good actress, and the writing in S 11 was also good. I think the biggest problem is that they have to many companies. If you have a big cast it’s hard to give everyone a individual personality, but it’s not impossible (for example Star Trek). I was hoping that it may get better in the new Season, but it didn’t, so I am out. I’m waiting for the next season and hopefully it gets better.

Her acting isn't that good as the doctor. I don't think it's even her fault, it's just that it doesn't seem that the doctor is the kind of character she would play that well. Her reaction for gallifrey being destroyed for example.
