i love getting an old collection similar to yours and finding out a few odd pieces that you didn't expect , last time I had a 1914 pulley and a Meccano Sack !

I've seen pictures of the sacks but not seen one yet!

The possibilities are endless! Now you have the right size clockwork for the model.

I'll have to play with those clockwork motors and see what I can drive with them. I was thinking about the gramophone and wondering how on earth will I get the drive ratio exactly right. I might have to cheat and 3D print appropriate sized pulleys.

I had late 70s/early 80s meccano - I still remember the boiler ends from the back of the 2nd box, although I _think_ the rolled up sheet that makes the body might have been plastic rather than steel. I definitely had some plastic sheets anyway - and I think one of them was transparent. My father always regretted not having hung on to his No. 9 set from the 50s...

My first set I got from Hamleys in London back in 1984. I am sure it had red metal parts as I used one as a steam engine base but yes, sets from that era had plastic parts too. And I think you're right some were transparent. A 9 was a big set. The biggest I think? This site has loads of the old manuals: www.meccanoindex.co.uk/Mmanuals/1948/Manuals.php?id=1517519061 The instructions are interesting as it's not like Lego where they give you every single step. It's more a list of parts for each model and a few photos. Unless I am missing something I guess people just had to work it out for themselves?

Fellow Meccano nerd here... a few comments on your 'haul'! The long slotted strip should actually be straight (part 55), the small yellow 1/2" pulley IS Meccano, but 70's, the small black rubber wheels are NOT Meccano, the spanner with a screwdriver is a very early design (1920s) but was re-introduced in the 80s I think, the little clockwork motor is called a Magic Motor, the red pulleys (no holes, circular rib) are NOT Meccano, the weight (not magnet) is NOT meccano and the green string is indeed Meccano! The little electric motor is NOT Meccano; those motors were fitted to Triang speedboats in the 60's. The rarer parts are generally rare because either they only came in the larger sets, but some parts didn't come in any sets at all - though all parts were available individually. Finally... I concur one your cutting and bending policy!

Thanks for the clarifications. The red wheels are marked Buz which seems to have been a local NZ/Aus Meccano clone. I need to work out a good way to flatten the red flexible parts. A lot of them are pretty mangled!
