I think that the steam railway locomotive reached the zenith of beauty in the late Victorian period and the absolute stunners were the Johnson spinners and Stirling's 8 ft. single. This is a beautiful recreation of the Johnson, what must they have looked like when quite new and maintained to the very high standard which prevailed then.

Absolutely my thinking Malcolm. Late Victorian and early Edwardian times were the most creative and artistic years in loco engineering. At the NRM in York one gets a kind of an impression what they must have looked like when crossing the country more than a houndred years ago.

Not all are that pretty, but many are. Design was an important marketing factor in the pre-grouping periode. Maintenance staff certainly sweared occasionally about the designs as they often were nice to look at, but hard to service and maintain.

It is a sratchbuild. Something you do once or twice in a lifetime. The next projects will be a bit simpler.
