"...yawns back, like a Muppet's mouth." The writing here is just phenomenal. And of course the way Steve Coogan times his delivery of "oh my god" afterwards, it's so well written, memorable and hilarious.

I was delighted to see Saxondale, he brought a new character more akin to people we know, less extreme, he filled the role perfectly (in double denim!) but added pathos with no loss of comedy. Then he went on to pure pathos with 'Philomena' and kept comic moments while adding the depth of life experience. The man is a genius.

Mid Morning Matters, and by extension, Scissored Isle, are the best work Partridge has ever been in. It is so much richer when Partridge knows that he can't be seen or confronted in person by the radio audience. Also, it's just as strong and natural when Alan isn't live on air (whereas, on This Time, it becomes glaringly meta). His character became so much more believably natural in this series, not the outright hamfisted bore/bored person/stereotypically conservative/lunatic of some previous shows. The TV chat show format never rings as true as even Alan would know that a chat show is no place for the overly surreal or overly regional/specific. Plus, on This Time, he deliberately tries to be PC and caring/sharing as he knows that's required of him by the BBC but it doesn't ring true that a somewhat loose cannon like Alan would ever be hired to co-front a The One Show-style 'needs a safe pair of hands' show. On ITV, though, it'd be a different story, as they have form hiring Piers Morgan and Loose Women.
@Margatroid2 жыл бұрын
As someone just discovering this character, I immediately found this incarnation to be the funniest, because it seems the most nuanced and real. Earlier versions seem like an overly-caricatured fake cliche designed to appeal to average stupid blockhead leftists. I've seen a lot of those types constantly referring to him as a "monster" and reveling in projecting their own flaws upon a fictional creation. A lot like Harry Enfield's "Loadsamoney" character, who Enfield obviously loved playing, but then wanted to try to pretend to be offended by. It is a low and foolish thing to try to project your own rascality onto someone else, and a far greater thing to enjoy a character who embodies the flaws inside all of us, allowing us to laugh at ourselves, and even allowing us to enjoy being naughty through him--which is what those people obsessed with saying "monster" are really doing anyway, but just denying it. I wonder how much of the character's improvement came from Coogan's own maturation over time, which no doubt included the natural process of becoming more conservative rather than childishly, narrowly leftist. He doesn't seem like the kind of artist like Robert Smith who can't grow up and keeps 18-year-old student politics his entire life. But then again, who knows.

@@Margatroid written by someone who's never once heard Coogan talk about his politics. Alan is meant to be an incredibly flawed character, but he has to have a bit of sympathy from the audience. Even in the early ones he was so pathetic you couldn't help but feel slightly bad for him.
