The prince of orange is amazing, but I get it. I was worried the new leaf wouldn’t stay orange for long, but honestly the new leaf stays orange forever and by the time it’s starting to turn green I have another new leaf emerging! I love it. The leaf stems aren’t green so it’s a nice contrast. Very solid plant but I get it!!! I dislike plants that others love. :) ahahaha.

This is exactly what I wanted to say! Especially the deep red petioles have such a contrast with the neon kind of green and also all the shades leaves go through from almost red to green is amazing. One of my faves!

Agreed, I adore my prince of orange. It's never been totally green for me, there's always a new red leaf emerging by the time the other one starts turning lighter orange. It's beautiful and seeing the leaves get bigger as it matures makes me happy.

I was super hesitant about collecting Orchids because there's the idea that they're all "high-maintenance" plants, and they are quite expensive compared to your average grocery store phalaenopsis (even the special hybrids of those can get crazy pricey). BUT, they are some of the most intriguing and rewarding plants I grow! They are slower plants and their price helps me slow down on brining too many home, too. The best bit of advice I got when starting to grow Orchids was "know your climate/culture". I get cold winters, so I can grow certain Orchids without issue by a window all year round, whereas other Orchids would not thrive in that situation. Totally worth a try someday!

I grow phaelaenopsis under grow lights in my dark NYC apartment, where I have no control over the heat. Some orchids like it cold in the winter but phaels don't care. They bloom year after year and my favorites are the mini ones. I got started with them because you can buy them at Trader Joes for under ten bucks each. Now I can always have flowers in the house.

Bromeliads are super easy! You fill their cups with water every few days and they're super adaptable to different light. They also don't die right after flowering. It takes several months and mine have always produced a pup (one produced 3) which just gradually takes the place of the mom. It's like agaves which I know you're familiar with. They're monocarpic! Carnivorous plants are also much easier than you think. They just need filtered/drinking water. They've always caught their own food too! They do need to be watered a lot. Crotons are also super easy! They just need really bright light and don't like to dry much, but I don't know why they have this reputation as difficult. They're not. Mine look great.

I really enjoy my few carnivorous plants, Sundew (or Drosera), Butterworts (Pings), Pitcher Plants (Nepenthes or Sarracenia). You don’t have to feed them, think of bugs as a supplement or natural fertilizer, but it’s not really a requirement. I keep mine in my IKEA cabinet, and have them all in a bowl of water, and use distilled or rain water and make sure the bowl is always filled. I do enjoy the blooms on the Pings & Sundews - their blooms are so stinking cute. Just make sure they’re sitting in water (I believe they’re naturally bog plants), but so fun and really rewarding (when they naturally catch fungus gnats). You should definitely give one a try! Super low maintenance, despite needing distilled / rainwater

One of my friend’s moms worked for a company that was in charge of the plants at malls, businesses, etc. I don’t remember exactly the details, but while they did take care of the plants, they also would just replace the plants that were not doing too hot (for example, the fiddle leaf figs that were not placed in the best environment) and just trash them. To them, idk if it was more cost effective/efficient/easier to just buy new plants rather than rehab or to keep the clients happy, they just made sure the plants were always in pristine condition by just buying new ones?

I absolutely love bromeliads, but specifically the neoregelia. I had a vivarium wall of them and they cloned themselves so much I had to give the pups away. They have so much color and such interesting structure, pairing them with other epiphytes transports you into a rainforest canopy.

I felt the same way about bromeliads until my mom gave me one. They’re botanically interesting, not difficult to care for, and they glow so beautifully when the sun is behind them. But they do take up a lot of space, and if the leaves get damaged, the plant won’t replace them so they can look ugly if you move them around a lot. My mom really loves them and now I do very much understand why, even though they’re still not one of my favorites

even before i got into collecting i hated looking at bromeliads! to me they remind me of grass and i despise grass. when you said strawberry shake i was so shocked because i thought i was the only person on the planet who doesn’t like it. except i would much rather have ppp over that because at least when ppp has weak variegation it’s always going to be pink. i’ve seen way too many shakes that have the most hideous shade of “yellow” possible. why name it strawberry when 9times out of 10 it’s a dirty yellow color. i’m glad people like it because i will never be one of those people. sorry i just had to rant about the shake bc i’ve never understood the incredible hype it received. AGAIN IF READ THIS YOU LIKE IT THATS GREAT IM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!

Becca! i am so happy to disagree with you about carnivorous plants! 😂💚 they are SO low maintenance and really don’t need high humidity! you can literally just keep it (the pot) in a tray of water and then u literally don’t even need to worry about watering. I have sundew, nepenthes and venus fly traps. I water with normal tap water, don’t ever stress about watering and they are THRIVING!! (also my humidity is around 40-64%) Please consider giving one of the three a try 😅💚 Also my sundew really halved my fungus gnat population! lots of love and i loved the vid!! :))

Sundews are fun! I have a Sundew and Nepethens living in my room with no additional humidity in just a tray of water and they catch flies and bugs to such a high level that just two days after getting them there was no more waving around like crazy to get fungus gnats and mosquitos away. Besides, it's so much fun to see all the annoying bugs the sundew has caught or the pitchers of the Nepethens finally pop open (they also smell so sweet at night😍)

I feel the same about most of the plants you list in this one. The only one I have, which made me laugh is an orchid. I got one and did some research, chopped flower spikes off to get plant into veg state. The flowers look cool but I am so excited over the new leaf peaking out, sacrifices were made...no remorse. Can I try to change your mind about bromeliads? Haha I've started my plant journey pretty recently (like 3 months ago), but my husband gave me a bromeliad in 2019 and I loved it! My mom took good care of it, so it grew a lot and now we have 10 plants that originated from the initial plant. It has never flowered though, so it's like a row of beautiful dark green thick leaves. Also they are super easy to care of! This particular bromeliad is currently at my parent's house, in the North of Brazil (Belém do Pará), so it makes sense that they're thriving haha. But my mom also keeps them hanging, either from an "Ipê" tree (which helps with partial shade) or in front of her bedroom window (East facing). My indoor bromeliad (here in Pennsylvania) is also thriving. I keep it in a little pot filled with orchid bark, hanging on an East window with lots of light. Right now, the original plant has two little "children" growing on its sides haha. I don't really care about the flowers, but the plant itself reminds me of home, and I love how easy it is to take care of it :) PS: I think my 2019 bromeliad is a Vriesea hieroglyphica, but I'm not 100% sure. My indoor bromeliad is a Guzmania I got from IKEA haha

Bog Carnivorous plants are very annoying with their constant watering needs, but I've had success with well watering my Nepenthese. Using just sphagnum moss and perlite, I'm comfortable soaking in distilled when I have some to leech and it works out for me. Also Brassavola Nodosa are amazing orchids! Only one I have, but super hardy and rewarding with beautiful fragrant blooms.

I love colourful plants, especially caladium. They are so beautiful. I kind of regret buying the Philodendron Red Sun, it seems to be the more muted brother of Prince of Orange. It's still beautiful, but I think Prince of Orange gives a wider variety of colour. I'm also a huge croton fan. I have a baby one and it's growing like crazy. I have a west-facing window that gets sun from 2-6pm. Most plants can't handle that but the croton thrives. Plants I probably won't ever own again are succulents. I don't know, they often grow ugly when they mature. They are cute when small hut then they start to lean or topple over and just grow all over the place. I don't know, they just don't speak to me. Also Hoya. To me the leaves and long stems are pretty ugly. I know there are a lot of fans, but I just don't find them cute.

IMHO Bromeliads (and crotons) are just for the landscape when you live somewhere hot enough to plant them in the ground. I put them all over here in northern Florida. I can't imagine having them in a pot. I love peperomia but i think every single one I've ever had has up and died on me at some point. I find them unpredictable. Only one thats the exception is my super duper thick leathery maculosa. Which I'm obsessed with.

Carnivorous plants don’t usually need a lot of humidity:) they just need to be in a tray of water that should be refilled (I just use bottled water or a zero filter (almost like a brita filter)). And you don’t have to feed them (they’ll catch things themselves😁). Also, Venus fly traps are ironically the most finicky species of carnivorous plants haha

Hi! I’ve started watching your videos about an week ago and they’ve really helped me take a step back and assess my plant collection ❤️. I do have one question. I have a Philo. Silver Sword cutting (it was a single leaf node cutting). About a month ago a new leaf started to come out, but out of nowhere it died. Will that cutting be able to produce a new leaf? It looks like the original leaf has that “empty slit” from a leave that already emerged.

Hi Becca, Oh I did have a bromeliad and it had a bloom that looked like a paddle that had layers, and I loved it at first, but the growth process is so unfun and I just let it go. I do have 3 orchids and they have bloomed every year that I have grown them. I wish I could find a carnivorus plant that I could keep alive. And there are some of my Calathea that are not fun to have, some are okay and some are not. Oh Croton can be difficult, I did have the Golden dust and it did great for awhile and then died on me. I don't have any of those Philodendron, and I had a Birken and it died on me and I think I will get another one because I loved those leaves. Thanks for sharing those plants and I agree with you, some plants can be so great and others too much of a challenge, or just one I am not interested in. I'd have to disagree about carnivorous plants being high maintenance! I have a Butterwort (pinguicula) and they look like cute little succulents, but have sticky residue on their leaves. And personally, I love that it flowers all the time. But regarding care, it's never been an issue of humidity or needing to feed them (ambient house humidity is totally fine). The main care is making sure that it's sitting in a little tray of distilled water, and I buy just a regular gallon of distilled water from the grocery store and it lasts me a long time because it's such a small plant. They like bright light, and can even handle some amount of direct sunlight, but also do just fine under grow lights. I highly recommend giving them a try :)

I have a venus flytrap, which I bought from a local grocery store. It's not true that they need high humidity, just normal house humidity. I also don't give mine distilled water. I used tap water which is filtered using Brita. I would only give it rain water if I collected some. Mine is kept growing new leaves that I may have to repot soon. It's still in its original tiny nursery pot since I had it (probably 2 months now). I find it as thirsty as my basil.

I am particularly enamoured by the Psychopsis mariposa green valley, Recchara Frances fox, Paphiopedilum fairriaenum and the Arachnis Maggie Oei variegated. The Prince of orange was a plant I was intrigued by, but didn't want to spend money on. I got one through a trade a month or so ago and I have grown to appreciate it a lot more. if there's any plant on this list that i think you should change your mind about it's orchids (which were only half mentioned haha). orchids are so diverse and the ways that you can mount them are really amazing. I'm more into the orchids that are installed that way vs. a grocery store orchid but if you watch any andy's orchid videos, particularly the crime pays but botany doesn't, you'll realize that they are so diverse and interesting. They're the biggest plant genus and they can be so exciting! (Couldn't agree more on everything else that you mentioned though haha.)

Howdy! Venus fly traps are actually so easy. Now probably isn’t the time to get one as they MUST go dormant in the winter (in fridge or kept outside if conditions are similar to carolina swamps.) i’d consider them! They want all of the sun, I’m in texas and they take the afternoon sun like a champ. Just any low mineral water will do, rain or distilled or even tap if it’s that pure. If they’re outside, they will be able to catch any food they need on their own! :) Thanks for your videos! Consider the fly trap homie!

I agree with these opinions. I also dislike most upright philodendrons once they get really large. They need support not to bend over and snap and the leaf spacing tends to widen and they just become meh to me. Now when they're super juvenile they're adorable but alas, plants grow. 🤣🤣 I also don't like most hoyas. A few are cool, like variegated hoya compacta but so many of them just look exactly the same to me and they're often sooooo pricey. No thanks.

I know you said Peperomia scandens but if that one does it for you I vouch for you to look at Peperomia Cupid, mine has that white stripe variegation and also dark green on some! from the Peperomia scandens peeking through

I definitely agree with most of these but aside from Venus flytraps needing distilled water and their soil kept moist they are low maintenance af. Mine is on my balcony in full direct sun with maybe 25% humidity and is doing GREAT! I’ve had if for 6 or 7 months now. It gets 100-115 most of the summer around here and I have succulents with sunburn, but my flytrap is just dandy! And because it loves rainwater and can survive temps down to the 20’s I’ll probably never have to move it!

So malls hire a company to look install and after the plants, as do a lot of office buildings. It’s there job to care for the plants and if they start looking not great they replace them immediately! So the mall croton might be literally the 4th one that year. The plants are basically being rented by the mall The company rehabs the plants and then uses them again or does a plant sale. (My mum works in the business side of one of these businesses)

I love bromeliads, but I can understad people who doesn't want them in the collection. They have light and water quality requirements very different from most of the popular house plants, even though they are very nice to improve the humidity.

Funny, I think I basically agreed with the first list but pretty much universally went. 'what? Noooo!' to this one haha! Bromeliads are So easy. chuck them on my porch, hose the top if I think of it and am there. forget them. Happy bromeliads. Carnivorous plants - yeah they're hard to keep alive, get that. But very cool. Here in the forests (Australia, cool temperate climate) we have millions of those fabulous little sundews growing where little else thrives. Fabulous little plants. I adore SS but it did take me a few looks to get into them. They grew on me, like Philo Painted Lady. Agree that like PPP they need to be nicely variegated, but I love them! The POO, yeah I can take or leave them. Crotons, I'm with you. Those buggers die at the drop of a hat, and while I love colour in plants as in everything, somehow nature (or maybe meddling humans breeding them?) got the palette a wee bit wrong with some of them, awful lot of clashing going on...hahaha!!

I would not be surprised if someone gifted you a bromeliad... it's a strong probability. They do always give out pups. A good one is Billbergia nutans which quickly forms large clumps and reliably flowers each year.

You've GOT to look into Pinguicula ! They are so wonderful and a very easy carnivore to care for. It primarily eats fungus gnats and looks like a beautiful, soft succulent. :)

Bromeliads also do nothing for me. I honestly don’t even find them pretty 🤷🏼‍♀️. I would totally have a carnivorous plant if I thought for a second I could keep one alive.

I used to like bromeliads, but then I realized that you're just buying a plant in the throws of death, since they die after blooming and they're almost always sold when they're in bloom, I was like, nah... They are super easy to care for, but growing the pups up to full size is just a long process for a meh plant. Crotons are ok - I don't mind the color, but yes - they need sunlight, which is not a problem out here in AZ, and given the proper light, they're pretty easy to care for and grow faster than Fiddle-Leaf figs. The only self-heading philo I have is a Black Cardinal, which I love - mainly 'cuz I think I've got some 'goth' in me or something - I just love dark plants. If carnivorous plants were easier to take care of, I'd love them, but the special requirements are just too much, esp. when I'm trying ti take care of over 100 other plants in the house - I just don't have time for picky plants.

prince of orange has been on my wishlist since i first got into plants, mostly because orange is my favorite color. but i’ve had the opportunity to buy one for a while now and im just not taking that step because im scared i’ll dislike it, kind of like the birkin, when it ends up just looking green. which it will. and im realizing now that you mention it that i’ll never end up buying it lol unless it has new growth year around i probably won’t like it

Haha I just got a bromeliad, and ordered a carnivorous plant. We will see how it goes, first time trying both. I remember buying a croton early on, and then it got attacked by spider mites and died. After that, I was like “meh.” I think they do better as landscaping plants in Indonesia or Thailand :P.

I have sundews. They do need special water like calatheas. I bought a zero filter & only use it for my plants so the filters don’t wear out as quickly. But they don’t need as high humidity as other carnivorous plants. I let them sit in water 24/7 and in a window. That’s it. Really easy (especially compared to calatheas grrrrrr) As for fungus gnats….yes, it works!!!!! Can attest to that, bestest decision I ever made seriously. Edited to add: hate orchids they stupidheads lol
I was influenced to buy these plants... and I regret it
