Lucia’s Allotment Journey

Lucia’s Allotment Journey

Күн бұрын

Hello and welcome to my channel, and another weekly vlog.
Maybe i need to start doing shorter daily one!!
my name is Lucia and this is my allotment Journey, my 10 meter x 14 meter plot is based in Buckinghamshire zone 7. I'm trying to do the NO DIG method.
This week I decided to be brave and put my black cherry tomatoes outside, along with clearing the paths between my plot and finally getting rid of that bed I really disliked.
The week ended with a lovely allotment dinner hosted by other plot holders before burning the allotment bonfire.

Hi Lucia hope you are well. My back hurt watching you digging with that short handled shovel, if you do that too much you will damage your back so be careful. Slugs and snails love rhubarb leaves and maybe just give it some manure they are heavy feeders. It’s been pouring and pouring here too 😢. The bean thing on,y works if you cut down the bean plant before it produces beans or those beans will absorb said nutrients. But they won’t do any harm either if you don’t cut them down. You are doing an awesome job Lucia and summer will bring wonderful harvests. You should pick the spinach now as I think the longer it goes the more bitter it will be. You can sow more later when it won’t bolt in heat of summer. Keep up the great work, Ali 🌧️🌧️🇨🇦

I really struggle with the larger ones with my wrist, so I have to use the small one. I go in with a mix of big and small….i’m like a child 😂. The weather has just been so up and down it’s mad. Thank you so much for the advice.

Hi, Lucia, the compost you put in your raised bed on top of the chippings is a soil conditioner and is usually added to other soils to improve the condition of the soil if say nutrients etc have been taken out from past planting (usually use 1 part soil conditioner to 3 parts soil/old multipurpose compost mixed/watered before you plant anything). it could kill those tomatoes on it's own as it might be too rich for them, and I would certainty advise not to directly sow seeds in the stuff. A little tip for your netting on your raise beds GARDEN CLIPS they are a life saver. Just seen now the soil conditioner has killed your tomatoes nothing to do with the weather Lucia

Hi Lucia. Looking good over all. I would suggest putting the compost in your beds first, then either plant them up then put the woodchip on the surface as a mulch to help keep moisture in the soil, or apply the chip on top, and then drag it out of the way to make your planting holes, then drag it back over. Woodchip can deplete the soil of nitrogen as it breaks down. The new bed looks nice. With the spinach, it's ok to leave it in if you don't need the space straight away, as it will actually keep weeds at bay and you can take it out when you are ready to plant a fresh crop. If the spinach is an heirloom type you can save the seed for next year. I have a batch of spinach in the same situation and I am keeping it for the seeds. I recommend you watch Charles Dowding KZbin channel, where he is a no-dig market gardener and goes into great detail about everything, including when is the right times for sowing to avoid your plants bolting (going to seed). With Tomatoes, you might find another allotment holder with some, or a garden centre. I don't know if you are aware that there are two main types of tomato plants, and they are broadly indeterminate and determinate. It's a bit long winded so go look it up. By climber, I think you are referring to cordon tomatoes. The incinerator issue sounds like they are being picky. X

that is not compost it is soil conditioner and is the reason it killed her tomatoes it is too rich on its own should be mixed 1 part soil conditioner to 3 parts other soil/used multipurpose soil, mixed and watered before pkanting anything in it. Seed should not been sown directly in it either

I'd go buy some bags of the cheapest compost you can find and mix it in with the supagrow. If you look on the packet it says not suitable for sowing seeds in to and needs to be "added" to soil or compost .

Hi Lucia is the rhubarb in a pot? it might be rootbound 🌱

No it’s in the ground. Actually in the same spot where I found it when I took on plot. I’ve been reading up, do you think maybe it needs splitting at some point? As I’ve no idea how long it’s been there.

@@LuciasAllotmentJourney Try Giving it Feed that is high in N Nitrogen and see if it perks up. The more leaves a plat has the higher the nitrogen requirements. It looks like its in a pot buried in the ground?. nitrogen gets washed away every time you water so with all this rain your defiantly need some.

Hello fellow allotment plot holder. The compost you put in the new raised bed for your tomatoes is a soil conditioner and should be mixed with multipurpose compost, on I to own it could kill your tomatoes as it is too rich. I would advise not to put seeds directly in the soil conditioner too. To keep your netting down on your raised beds get some garden clips, they are a life saver for netting. God video 👍

your spinach has bolted because of the weather and long daylight days, the leaves taste bitter after bolting and will not produce fresh leaves, pull up and compost, get a variety that does not bolt like perpetual spinach or sow later in the season
