It takes a considerable time to bed in a new attacking system - Ireland went through that when Farrell became head coach and there are going to be ups and downs on the journey to reach a consistent level with the players and coaches all on the same wavelength. Other countries such as New Zealand and Australia are basically in the same place with new coaching teams and they will want to change the previous regimes methods to align more with their own coaching philosophy. Rassie and Tony Brown are probably well aware that it may not look too good at the beginning, but if you stick at it the rewards are usually well worth it. The best time to implement it is at the start of a new world cup cycle so there is time to adapt as you go along.

Hi guys from an Irish perspective I really enjoyed the chat. It is an honest assessment of the game and you gave the Irish credit for their performance. I listened to another SA rugby pod and it was pure arrogance and stupidity. Critical of the Bokke players and management. They want to drop the whole SA team I think. Also said Ireland were only missing one player so their knowledge of Irish rugby is pathetic. Also stated that Frawley missed 2 drop goals in European cup final. If it's not in their country they don't know anything about rugby. I get that as we are new boys on the block you don't much about us but don't show your complete ignorance of the Irish rugby team. For gods sake we play in the URC same as you. It was super analysis by you guys. Well done.

Kudos, nice to hear balanced, incisive analysis (Irish fan here). Tho I disagree on one point .. if there was a 3rd test, I would back the Boks to bounce back. From what I see, I do believe there was a bit of complacency amongst the Boks, fostered by the Irish injuries during the week - this explains to some degree their 1st half performance. And it’s always easier to motivate that extra 1 or 2% after a loss, which was essentially the difference between the sides! Great discussion Thks.

Agree, Kwagga great impact player. Wiese also not the answer and hope Evan can step up as well as Hanekom. Game management yes but even more our forwards attack system is a failure. Too many single players going into contact where the ball gets ripped from them by multiple Irish waiting for them. If we want to play an expansive game (which we currently suck at), the Bok forwards need to attack in pods or we will keep on getting turned over.

The travesty of being a Bok supporter is that because the Boks aren’t consistent, ever, they will always leave us supporters disappointed or saddened. They miss three penalties and win by 7 points, they convert all 8 penalties and lose by 1 point. They started the drop kicking game or at least resuscitated it in a World Cup by Jannie de Beer, who dropped 5 against England, and then shelf it completely 🤷🏻‍♂️ Another thing that really gets me is, we got caught out two weeks in a row with the same move that resulted in a try by Conor Murray, that set the tone for the last game. Furthermore, our guys looked very lethargic in that game to me.

Thanks for a great show gents, pleasure to listen as always and thank you for keeping us sane. All credit to Ireland they deserved the win and they should be proud....as a SA Bok supporter when we lose I can still feel pride as I did when we lost against Ireland at the WC, only if we play as ourselves.... but when I cannot reason the lack of variation on attack with no close channel ball to the best inside centre in the world Damian (not once) to fatigue the defenders and inveriably attrack at least 3 or more to the tackle, and Pollards inability to attract defenders or even challenge the advantage line.....his poor kicking so soon out of hand when we are in the 22m on attack, no pressure built, failing to kick deep on a goal line dropout which we 'never' gather,, or kicking again in the 22m in the last 8 minutes instead of holding possession and grinding out the penalty to put the game out of reach....I am embarrassed for those simple game management decisions and an inability to dominate the Irish physically in order to mentally apply pressure, making them want to opt out of the collisions and slowly fade away. Why is attack only seen as one philosophy of ball in hand, I have always found that our defence and grinding play is a form of attack as it is so hard to live with and inevitably leads to opportunities, which we have so clinically finished off before. I cannot agree that Pollard looked good based on that, his inability to commit defenders leaves no opportunity for space out wide. He has no counter attack ability on the turn overs, just kicks it up field instead of turning to the open side and playing wide away from defenders to stretch them, and a direct run into the defender on his next attempt, while young Sasha manages to show him how to hustle and to challenge the gain line making them turn, making them panic. Manie played the majority of the 23WC and that mobilised the backline, advantage line attack and hard defence, sublime kicking out of hand on a dime, a balance of power and skill of Springbok rugby that I could be proud of. Looking at the URC Bulls amazing semi-final win against Leinster and in contrast this new Tony Brown "attacking style", I don't recognise our proud rugby style in the Springbok team at the moment and I feel if we lose our identity again we will spend the rest of the next 4 years trying to find it again wondering why, why waste all the talent we have. Of course we missed Willie here no doubt. Pollard did claw our way back in the 2nd half but I maintain without this inefficient attack which simply looks like practice drills on the pitch (no ruthlessness no real threat) and Pollards poor kicking out of hand and not challenging the advantage line, we would not have been down 16 point to begin with. We beat the all blacks 35 -7 at Twickenham (with an almost completely different backline I might add) and somehow there is a misconception from across the world that we are not an attacking side, this is the most effective politics in rugby I have ever heard and I cannot believe that Rassie has succumbed to this misdirection and what is a clear tactic as soon as we are too dominant in the game. Nothing against Tony Brown as I love the guy but moving away from our gain line dominant structure that quite clearly feeds a dominant pack, for 6 passes to go sideways is not an effective attack and I cannot believe we are back to this out of date structure, we are not Japan or NZ. Our structure and shape are key differences to our game that we thrive on. Forgive the lack of subtlety but I am a hurting South African for something that is very clearly avoidable.

Fair play to you for admitting that we Irish have balls. We are Celts and known throughout the world as "The Fighting Irish". Andy Farrell, our beloved Head Coach, is Anglo-Irish and therfore the same blood runs in his veins. There is no doubt that the great Boks are rightly number 1 and we are number 2. Not much separates us as evidenced in test 2 and in numerous games between us in the past 18 months. Test 1 could have been won by us except for the English ref and his sideline pals that ensured by their ridgedness that we were penalised at every turn costing us a try in test 1. It took 8 penalties (if I can recollect correctly) that allowed the Boks back into the game in test 2. If we had more discipline the margin may have been greater. One should also consider that we were missing 5 key players and rugby is only ranked 4th as our national game and as Rassie said we only have about 160 professional rugby players in the whole country. Given that we do punch well above our weight. There is undoubtedly rivelry between the Boks and us but there's also exists great respect and a closeness that does not exist elsewhere. We have had SA coaches, including Rassie at Munster, and players freely moving to Ireland and playing and coaching with our proviential teams. We also learn from one another and the respect between us is at another level. I would not take any notice of headline grabbing pundits who run off at the mouth to gain headlines. The Boks are a great team that reflects the great culture and traditions of SA. Only for a crap unjust selection process in the RWC, probably deliberately contrived by the powers that be, we could have met the great Boks in the final which would have been an experience to watch. The Boks are renowned for their big hard hitting players and now we Irish have shown in test 2 that it works both ways. Notwithstanding the test 2 result we Irish have the greatest respect for the great SA BOKS. Finally, your programme is excellent and I chuckled many times. Keep doing what you are doing. ☘️☘️

Unfortunately you're right, you can put Bongi and Kolisi in that argument as well. But it's not just about being comfortable, it's simply alot of the current SA squad are getting on in years. If you look at the 2015 AB's, after that World Cup a bunch of experienced players hung up the boots, and the team in all respects has never been the same since. If some of these more experienced SA players aren't phased out of the squad or give up their jersey, it's only going to count against the Springboks on the field and the scoreline.

Good stuff boys. One point- You're saying this is the best you've seen Ireland play, I wouldn't agree with that one. Winning the test series in NZ after losing the first test was the best we've seen from Ireland. Nevertheless, at the weekend, they were short 5 top class players and had to use 3rd/4th choice in a couple of positions. That's what made this particular win so impressive. They weren't going back to Ireland without a win and they play better when people write them off. They don't lose 2 on the trot, they've been the most consistent side for a few years now. I think they're only 3 losses in 24 or 25 games.

Because physicality and dominating collisions is such a big part of the Boks game, it just feels like of they are not in a frame of mind where they have a point to prove and bring that level of desperation to a game, they look a completely different side. I think the 2022 AB test at Ellis Park is a very good comparison. Unfortunately, Handre almost mirrors this trait, he is a beast in knockout rugby, but while his kicking was on song on Saturday, his general game play and execution all around was very poor and led to decisive moments in the match. Looks like we are a 60 odd percentage team between world cups, who produces great results every now and then as soon as our pedigree gets questioned.

Fair shout lads with the 'respect' comments and loved the opening song, just brilliant, one thing which applies to all teams, Energy and Intent, SA had it for the first test, angered by the WC loss, Ireland had it in spades for the second week, very difficult to bottle that and bring it out a week later. I think the catalyst for Irelands intent was the tackle by Snyman on Casey, while not illegal, definately unnecessary given the size difference, I think Farrell motivatedthe team around that event.

Guys please relax. In Rassie we trust. That is our slogan and we are not going to change it. Other teams are getting as strong as us. We are no longer the biggest.. other teams like Ireland have players bigger than us and are catching up in strength. World Rugby has taken away the Springbok strengths.. the kick chase is now useless with all the blocking, the maul after one stop makes it ineffective.. we have a crazy player profile in the backline with skill and speed. Why would we not develop a hybrid model to take advantage of the natural speed and skill set? Rassie saw this in the RWC, he kept on asking the guys to bring a vibe, he the realised that we will need a coach to coach our attack if we are to successfully lead the pack. Let’s all buy into the plan. Not saying that we must leave our natural strengths.. guys like Wilco must join the team to ensure our scrum is an effective as possible. Imagine Wilco and Ox.

So we're in crisis now? Best performance I've ever seen from Ireland. First victory I've seen from them over us, where both teams are playing to a decent level, that I actually felt was a genuine victory as opposed to us missing players and kicks and so on. The fact of the matter is that we can stretch back really far with this team where we dont put full performances together. Losses to Aus in rugby champs in SA couldve won, loss to Ireland in Dublin could've won, big win against England that we couldn't score after minute 60, should've put 50 up, thrash ABs in Nelspruit then let it slip at ellis park when we could have put them t the sword, big win against ABs pre world cup which again, could have put nearly 50 up but went to sleep after minute 60, went to sleep vs France in quarters in first period of second half where game started to slip and were it not for our scrum, started on snooze vs England in semis, again thanks to our scrum, came out blitzing ABs in final and again, with all the odds in our favour, we went to sleep and nearly lost. In this series in 1st test, shouldve absolutely smoked Ireland, went missing in patches, 2nd test worked our way back and again, went to sleep. I totally get that your quality opposition is likely to have a patch in the game themselves but we're not managing games at times, regardless of the strategy or mindset we're playing with. The 2019 world cup final was something like a complete performance. There are countless times we kick when we should run and run when we should kick, and its often around the state of the match we're playing. Better decision-making is needed, course management as it were. I personally believe this is what Bok coaching team is after AND that they will achieve it, the players we have now, compared to the past, are much better footballers, much more skilled ball players and they'll get it right.

Nah. The best Irish performance was when they won the series test in NZ. In the last 5 games between the sides, Ireland have 4 wins and the boks have only 1. At the weekend, Ireland were missing 6 of their top class players and had some 3rd/4th choicers on the field... but they still won. The boks are deserved world champs but its worth remembering you only won every knock out game by 1 pt. You didn't dominate anyone and you played against 14 for most of the final. You deserve you're number 1 spot after winning the world cup, but you cannot say you're better than this Irish side. They're the most consistent side with only 3 losses from 24 or 25 games.

The point the commentators were also making was that at your best you won 4 knockout matches by 1-2 points. If you can look at the IRB rankings you will see SA and Ireland and to an extent NZ are now well clear of France , England. That is reflected in the recent results pattern.

I've said this since the 2019. SA are the best team in the world. There is a tournament to decide that and they're back to back champions. Ireland being 1 or 2 in the rankings shows we are very consistent and capable of competing with the best.

Love the channel guys not sure I agree with the analysis on this one though. Ireland played great but they hardly beat us…if you look at the first half we made a bunch of unforced errors and missed real opportunities to score points…2nd half we completely dominated the game and chose penalty kicks instead of going for tries which might of not come off. They got a drop goal after 80mins fair play but I see a lot of positives for the Boks.

i agree about the backs to the wall thesis, and i think its because so much of the bok advantage comes from physicality. physicality requires focus and that extra 1% effort. knockout matches the boys find that extra bit to make their tackles or disrupt a ruck. the ABs and ireland on the other hand can rely on their system to just keep girinding, through the hands, until a space opens and a player of talent can move 30m up the pitch

Agree that Ireland played great rugby. You guys said that the Boks should stick to the physical game, yet Rassie is trying to expand on that. The fact that Ireland matched and overcame the Boks physicality shows that the Boks won’t have a way to win if they do not try and at least practice the expansiveness, for when the upfront and physical game plan doesn’t work. South Africa didn’t need to rely on the physical game plan in the first test because of the expansiveness.

I'm Irish and I would say that 50%-60% of the time SA will physically dominate Ireland and win. But we are a better attacking team and can turn physical teams like SA around depending upon the luck of that physical outcome and a refs breakdown interpretation. NZ are in transition, but they are abetter attacking team than we are. If NZ can sort out their line out and improve their breakdown physicality (which I think they can) they can beat SA. Im not sure of a 1, 2 commentary without NZ is a valid one!

Agree with you on the rankings debate - there are currently 4 top sides at least who are in that discussion - NZ, France, Ireland and SA....perhaps even England at a pinch. However, no evidence to support your first assertion re: Bok v Ireland rivalry. Recent history between the two is decidedly one-sided in Ireland's favour, in pure win/loss statistical terms. Ireland are the Bok's bogey team. Stand to be corrected, but since 2017, think Ireland have won 4 of 5 games

This coming from a SAFFA and we do not like England. But they showed why they played so well in the RWC semi final, and it was a really hard semi for us in 2023 and an even harder semi against the AllBlacks in 2019.

You two were complaining after the first test because you didn't like Tony Brown's style which made you win against Ireland by 7 points for the first time in years. You said you wanted your "brutal Boks" back. Well you got it back and they got brutalized. Rassie realized that you can't just brutalize any of the top 4 teams, you have to have more than that. Hence why he brought in Tony Brown. They tried his method against Wales and then against Ireland in the first test and scored some amazing tries! It's not a coincidence that they lost the second test because they went back to their usual crash, bash, kick style. Ireland is not the same anymore. Schmidt began their transformation and Farrell has taken them to another level, especially with some of the rugby league elements he has incorporated into their game.

Just like to comment on the 'croc roll' as apparently Marx has a leg break, i really don't think there was intent there, Etzebeth was holding McCarthy preventing him from clearing out, this changed the whole dynamic of the tackle, Marx is so strong, which meant Ryan was forced to come in from about 10 yards away and worsened the situation. Another point, not wishing to get into ifs and buts, but SA lucky with a couple of clear wrong penalty calls enabling them to get their nose in front, as I said many missed calls throughout, but felt that was a crucial point in the game.

If we want to play a more attacking style, as opposed to attacking from a defensive position and putting the opposition under pressure, then we need players like Grant, Mannie, and Hacjivah in the squad. I love Faf and Polly, but they are best utilized with a game plan that is dictated by the boot. If we are to be more consistent, we need the right type of players for the right game plan; otherwise, we'll remain a tournament team that performs best under pressure and as the underdog.

My view is this. Boks are 3 games into a new season with a new defense and new attack coach playing a new style which they will eventually work into a hybrid system with their old style, depending on field possie, score line, opposition, occasion. They will revert to old Boks when required and use new style to finish better in the op 22. Rassie is not stupid. Right now he's 3/4 brandy and 1/4 coke to get the players used to the brandy. He'll look for a nice balance of 1/3 brandy and 2/3 coke by the next world cup.
