As an extension of your discussion point about Swedish-speaking areas in Finland, I'd always wondered if there was any significant number of Finns who speak Russian in the border towns or if you see a decent amount of cultural spillover from the Russians living nearby.

I lived in South-Eastern Finland for a while and the service industry there definitely catered to Russian tourists hevaily with signage at places like hotels, malls and restaurants. As for actual language competence, that's a bit harder to answer. I'm sure some business owners speak at least a bit of Russian but I can't say I ever heard people speaking it in large numbers.
