Easy to stop too - Apple need to ask for physical Gov-issued photo ID at the store and also UPS only deliver to the customer address, not someone on the street. The systems are in place but ignored.

Apple should have give customer a verbal password regardless of ID and QR Code AND TAKE A PHOTO OF THE PICK UP PERSON AND FINGERPRINTS WHICH CUSTOMER AGREES TO AT TIME OF PURCHASE. LEGITIMATE CUSTOMERS SHOULD BE GLAD FOR THE EXTRA STEPS.

when the stolen Mac gets associated with an Apple ID they will know who has it, they should know the serial number. Likely the crook has sold it but they can deactivate the computer and locate it with find my to get it back.
