I'm trying Cashmerette Club for a year (a subscription plan where you receive patterns each month). Both the top and dress shown in this video were made from Cashmerette Club patterns. I am NOT compensated by Cashmerette for making or reviewing their products.
www.cashmerett...
The Carlyle T-shirt (t-shirt with square neckline)
Fabric: www.loiseaufab...
A relatively heavy (220 gsm) knit. Sews well and washes really well. (I've already twice spilled food on this top!)
The Kineton Dress (Woven dress with elasticated waist, pockets. No closure)
Fabric: www.rickrackte...
Nice weight cotton lawn. It seems to be opaque, which is great for a dress that will be worn in the sun.

I agree, Cashmerette Club is worth every nickel ~ I’ve seen clothes for many years, but am amazed at all the new things I’ve learned since joining the Club. And, except for blending sizes ( due to my personal body shape) I have virtually no alterations to be done to their patterns & that’s a first for me.

I love the Cashmerette Club! They reached out to me before the club launched and asked that I sew the first three patterns (including the Carlyle tee), and in exchange they gave me a year subscription to the club. I liked the club so much that when the year was up I purchased another year. I also found the Carlyle Tee to be more fitted than I prefer, but part of that might be because we’re in a fashion cycle where our clothes are a little more loose fitting. Great job on both of them! Love the fabric choices.

On the dress, I agree about removing the ruffle on the sleeve - visually it adds bulk horizontally. For the same reason, I think I'd lengthen the skirt with a plain band on the same grain as the bodice, not a ruffle. My thoughts. I like the pink tee neckline, and that's a good color on you. Thanks for sharing.

I’m short waisted too (15” neck to waist) but like you, I have a ‘reasonable bosom’ 😄 and that’s what pulls the bodice up. Only realised that recently! So I now add a little length to the bodice. It has helped with my fitting issues.

I like your video, Janine, very informative and straightforward. I have subscribed and will check more videos. btw, I am also in Canada, London Ontario.😊 I am also intrigued by the Cashmerette Club, I sew all my daughter’s clothes (she has Down Syndrome, has a full figure). Re your first dress, I agree with your comment re the sleeves. I didn’t see it as short waisted, but I am probably just not experienced enough to say for sure. You know that much better.

Thanks so much for watching, Susan! My husband lived in London a long time ago, before we were married. He has said that it is a really pretty city. Cashmerette has some nice options, and several are available in regular patterns, although the Club has quite a few good options, too. I think the dress feels short waisted because it pulls up when I move my arms. I have to admit that it hasn't been worn once this summer ...

I love, love, love the dress on you, just the way it is. I would not do anything else to it. You did a great job matching the design on the fabric to an appropriate pattern. The sleeves are fine, when you look at the overall design. The length is balanced and respectable and I would not do a ruffle or add anything to it. The dress is busy enough, and you have balanced it perfectly. Sometimes when we work on something for a while, we become overly analytical and critical. The first thing I thought when I saw you in the dress was, WOW! I was truly skeptical about the fabric when I first saw it. It has turned out FANTASTIC! I apologize for coming across straight forward and bossy. A hangover from my life's career choice. LOL Of course, it is your dress. Do as you like. I absolutely love it on you the way it is. Enjoy the summer. The rain and cool weather was a reprieve from out early heat wave. 🙂

Your makes are great. I love how you always explain what you did to fit the pattern. Sharing that insight always helps me in my “fitting journey.” I have to agree with the consensus on the sleeves-remove the elastic for more tailored look. However, I liked how you shared the elastic sleeve technique with us. As for the ruffle-I worry that ruffle will take away the elongated visual you receive from the vertical stripes in the skirt. Could you do a facing on the inside at the hem to lengthen the skirt a little, if you really want it longer? As for the pants…didn’t you make pants for your travel capsule wardrobe recently. They seemed rather straight fitting and possibly could be cropped.
@JanineSews

Thanks for all of your kind words and your feedback. I really appreciate hearing why things might work or not work because it helps for future makes. I did make pants (thank you for remembering!) but the patterns I've used are quite basic - no pockets, no yokes - and think I'm ready to take another step and try something more complicated. My pattern stash has easy - then super complicated jeans. Nothing in between 😁

I’m also a club member. I haven’t tried most of the club patterns yet due to time but have plans for several of them. I do find Cashmerette patterns fit me the best with minimal adjustments. (8-10 E/F). My favorite is the Vernon Shirt which isn’t a club pattern but the 1st shirt pattern that fit me! I like both of your makes! The suggestions about the band on the bottom of the dress and removing the elastic sound perfect. I think your pattern matching is great!

The pink looks lovely, the colour and style are perfect for you. I would say that neckline looks BETTER than store bought! Wow, that dress is gorgeous! I agree with you about the sleeves, a bit shorter and no elastic. What if you added a band to the bottom but didn't do a ruffled flounce. Maybe add little slits at the sides of the band. I would do the band so that the print went in the opposite direction to the skirt. It wouldn't have to be very wide. I laughed when you said winter felt like yesterday. We visited friends in Calgary at the end of July years ago. When we left Southern Ontario, it was hot and humid. When we arrived in Calgary, it was 3 degrees with a possibility of snow. My friend gave me a heads up so my husband and I were prepared. We had warm jackets, hats, and mittens. I think your mom will love her beautiful new top. How sad that many of her clothes are ruined in the laundry.

The pink top is fantastic on you. Not only is the colour exactly right for you but that square neckline is stunning. It doesn't look too tight but I also like a little more room in my t-shirts. The dress is really nice and I would wear it just like it is. If you do want to work on it further, what I would do is and eliminate the sleeve ruffle. If you wanted to do more work regarding the length, I would insert a 1 and 1/2 or 2 inch band at the bottom of the bodice. I personally am not a big fan of putting horizontal or ruffles on my legs but i do it when it's the style. If you do decide to do horizontal and or ruffles, I would start it up further therefore making the band or ruffle with enough length to make it look like it was designed that way. Hope that makes sense😂. I haven't sewn anything since about April. I had to organize a celebration of life and then the gardening starts. When the garden starts the sewing seems to take a back seat. Today and tomorrow are thunderstorms so I'm going to clean the house and do some sewing. I hope you have a great day. Happy sewing.

Thank you, Leann! Those are excellent suggestions and I appreciate your good descriptions. The pattern does have a puff sleeve without the ruffle and I think that I figured I know better than the designers 🤣 I'm likely going to wear the dress to a Canada Day party this weekend and will see how I feel and if I want more length after that. I need to garden, too! Flip of the coin most days - house/garden work or sewing. Hope you get some sewing in!

Great pattern reviews. For me, I've found cashmerette tends to use a little more negative ease than I like so I usually go I size up everywhere except the shoulders. Your Kinneton is really cute. I've passed on that pattern but you have me rethinking it. As for seamwork, ditto on your experience only I'm just about 6 months in and have only done one test garment which was a fail. In hindsight, it was really cute on the tall model. I'm short. I should've known. I love Cashmerette though and am a huge fan of Jenny. Seamwork, I enjoy their community.
@JanineSews
@JanineSews Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That's a really good observation on Cashmerette and in retrospect, that's likely why I haven't made many of their dresses. Seamwork has a good sized following so maybe it's the styles that don't appeal to all of us? I have at least 25 patterns downloaded and I keep looking at them but they're not exciting.

I love both garments you made! I haven’t made the Carlyle yet because I’m not sure about the square neckline, but I have made the Kineton. Cashmerette seem to draft so that the waist hits pretty high on most people (because many curvy people have their narrowest point a little higher than their natural waist). As a result, I have to add at least 1” to every Cashmerette bodice even if I’m not long-waisted at all. 🇨🇦😊

I recently finally sewed 3 pairs of the Great British Sewing Bee capri pants. Very simple pants, slim but not tight and slightly cropped. Pattern is free and the have a large format printing version so no taping sheets together unless you want to. I did add a waistband instead of using the facings because i wanted to take advantage of a border print. Super easy sew either way and also easy to fit.

Deb, thanks so much 🩷 Do you think that Cashmerette has a more short-waisted profile? I've only ever sewn Cashmerette Patterns that don't have a waist so have never encountered this before. I'm just a smidge shorter than you (about 3/4 inch) so maybe I need to add a couple of centimetres. Definitely something to look at on other patterns.

I really like your dress. Yes I would change the sleeves I’m not a fan of elastic gathered sleeves. The high waist looks fine it eventuates your waist. A tie belt would look cute. Loved this video and how cogently you present your ideas. As everyone here says, that pink square neck top is the bomb on you! As to the dress, I think the waist would look more planned if the dress had a bit more length, (maybe a 3” band?) but not with a ruffle, with a solid or like you said, the fashion fabric horizontally. I think the pink/red part of the sleeve ruffle is best removed- making it visually less busy, would be my goal, but keeping as much length as you can. Personally, I would use the pattern that you have already perfected using top down center out and just cropping them! Have a great week in the lovely and cool north!😊

P.S. I’ve had a dress where the waist was too high and not to my liking. I added a 2” wide “waistline” band at the bottom ( could leave your elastic casing below it). I think that would be easy to do as the horizontal fabric on the top would make that less noticeable. Just an idea, if it still seems too high or out of proportion. Then, may not need a bottom band. Hmmm

I like the length of the dress, I think it looks great on you, but that is about where I wear my dresses, maybe even a smidge higher. Like you, I'm not a fit-and-flare fan, my dresses are sheath (straight line) only. But that length looks good on you. Do you know your bust curve measurement (apex to bra band). It can be helpful in allowing for length below that area. Fantastic job on both. Love the dress fabric. I did not think the t-shirt was too tight, that color is a knockout on you.

You look great in both pieces! The colors and the patterns are choosen really well for You. You said, that you want to lengthen the dress. I love the pink square neck t-shirt. I have just sewn a check pattern wool shacket. Pattern matching is so tricky! You did a great job with the dress. Very pretty! I think the waist is fine, it sits at your natural waist except under the bust. So, maybe a larger bust size??? I think that would prevent the 'pull up' at the waist under the bust. ❤

Could be pattern is designed to be more of an empire waist so would be shorter waisted then. I have made a cashmerette pattern before and it came up way too small. I should’ve checked the amount of ease. I just made it my size. It’s still in a plastic bag in my cupboard lol waiting for me to shrink 😂

Aww Cindy, I know it's really frustrating when you put time, effort, and money into a project and it doesn't work out. I agree that this might be drafted for more of an empire waist. When I looked at pictures of other completed projects, they were all over the place. Some people had pulled the waist up so it was empire, others wore it down around their natural waist 🤷‍♀️. I'm just a smidge over 5'7" so my height also may have something to do with it.

What about using the Magna pant pattern in the Ahead of the Curve book for your capris?

Nancy, I thought about it but looked at some reviews that weren't great. That sort of scared me away. I think I've decided to try the Love Notions Duet. I'm taping the pattern pieces together today but am still waffling. Have you tried the Magna pattern? There weren't many reviews so I'd love to hear if it has worked for people since that's one less pattern to buy.

Cashmerette patterns are all drafted to have the waistline under the bust, because that flatters a lot of larger busted women, and it’s where their natural waist lies. I have a fairly straight drop from my underarm to my waist and my hips rapidly increase from there. I really dislike having the waist of a dress hit me in the middle of that space. It just doesn’t feel comfortable. I usually drop the waist an inch or two on Cashmerette patterns.

This makes sense. Thank you! I am pretty straight - never had an hour glass figure - and my bodice is short in comparison to my legs so I think I need to follow your lead and add some length to the bodice.

Hi Janine, I’ve just found your channel and really enjoyed this video! I love the dress but personally I’m always wary of elasticated waists as I’m nervous that they will be too high (or too low!) and just move around uncomfortably!,, did you find this feature of Kington worked OK for you?

@JanineSews 6 ай бұрын
Hello Moira! I'm like you and am wary of elasticated waistbands. I did loosen the elastic a fair bit and that helped to make it much more comfortable, plus that stopped the dress from riding up. I also removed the elastic from the sleeves which made a huge difference! Now that I'm starting to think of summer sewing and perhaps a new dress, if I was to try this style again I think I would do three or five rows of elastic (or shirring) so that it looks more like a waistband instead of a thin row of gathers.

I think you could change the sleeves to just a short sleeve.
@JanineSews

That's what I'm thinking, too. I'm going to try to pin it out to see how it would look since the sleeve is quite wide to accommodate the gathers. Thank you!

Sleeves look too bunched up. Shorter might look better. Great idea for the bottom with the ruffle. Show us the remake!

Hello, I'm not really qualified to teach sewing. There should be some good instructions on how to use your foot pedal in your sewing machine manual. Although I find that it's easiest to just practice using the foot pedal so you can get used to how much pressure is needed for the work that you are doing.

Have you tried the dress with a wide elasticated belt? That might feel a little better if you feel the waist is too high.
@JanineSews

I haven't tried it with a belt, granted I have just a few and they're all leather, thin, and too small - hahahaha. There might be a belt in my mom's wardrobe that I could borrow. It's certainly an easy solution. Thank you!

Like you, I dislike subscription services, and therefore will not be subscribing to Cashmerette (or any other pattern company.) It is unfortunate that these patterns are not available to buy individually and therefore I do not use Cashmerette patterns

There seem to be a lot of businesses that are going the subscription route. I don't know if it always pays off as there are plenty of people who choose to vote with their dollars!

The patterns are effectively available for single purchase the month they are released. You join for at the monthly rate for $9, download the pattern, and then cancel. In talking about the club, Jenny says specifically that you can join for a month to get that pattern. That’s what I do. I’ve cut back subscriptions as well, I do better with buying only what I want.
