For anyone wondering, conditions like fibromyalgia are recognised by pip. I have fibro and although the process was emotional and I had help from my dad and citizens advice, I did get awarded pip.

This is wonderful content. We can easily get overwhelmed and confused. Don't feel alone y'all! Irishman here, and have lived in Florida 18 years now. Since becoming paraplegic in 2019 following an automobile accident, I've had to meander the many obstacles of our system here. Finding out my entitlements etc. It's a headache, that's for sure. United Spinal Association here in The US, I have found to be an excellent resource for information.

Most of the time you will be refused at the first application for disability payments. (Every one i know who has it and deservedly so), was refused at the first application. So don't give up! Reapply.

I had to give up my driving licence, but along with the blue badge we're entitled to a bus pass, and that has genuinely been my lifesaver

As long as score 8 points on certain part of the mobility part of pip you can get a blue badge as i have one and I don't currently receive the higher rate. You right when you say it is not easy to get these benefits. I feel I have been fighting ever since I became disabled to get the help I need, and it is just draining and frustrating

unfortunately that isn't the case in all areas of the uk as different areas do it differently:( i am full time wheelchair user on higher rate mobility pip and only got accepted for blue badge after like 10 months of trying, however other areas in the uk are different. i totally understand the last bit though and i hope you are okay and that you get all of the help you need soon x

yes your right ,the general consenses is that applying is so difficult, you just have to keep at it , it shouldn't be that way though

Gem, I really enjoy your vlogs,and I have learnt so much from them, I have primary progressive multiple Sclerosis and it means everyday life is getting harder,but we are going back to Florida this August to see the mouse and Harry P! The rim grips are so good I bought some as soon as I seen your vlog! And I got a Vlogging camera 📸 for my birthday, we are total amateurs at it but we will be using it, it won’t be as good as yours but we want to use it on all of our trips and vlog it! Going back to what disability benefits you can get is bloody hard work I was refused 3 times until I managed to obtain it! But I kept at it and finally got it and now I have the enhanced part which means we are able to get a 🚗, but it wasn’t easy

@@Wheelsnoheels The biggest problem I am going to have with finding a support group is I live in a rural area, Nerast City which would have one is a little over 160 km. I can't remember the last time I even saw another person in a wheelchair outside the hospital. I talked to my therapist about it today they are going to look into it for me. I think I saw part one But I going to rewatch it again. Thank you

For any immigrants to the UK with no recourse to public funds, note that even though you aren't eligible for most benefits (no PIP, DLA, etc), you CAN apply for Access to Work funding!

If you live in London you can apply for a freedom pass with your proof of PIP, which lets you use TFL for free. Outside of London, disabled bus passes work all over the UK and some trains depending on county!

Thank you for mentioning about having a social worker help you with PIP. I have epilepsy & A-typical autism. I have tried for DLA in the past but it has gone to appeal & back then I didn’t have any help to go to appeal. But I have just gotten a social worker who I will see for the first time this week. I will definitely ask them if they can assist me this time I apply for PIP.

This is awesome Gem. from my experience the professionals are pretty bad at givin out this info. I have recently discovered a disability travel company called Limitless Travel. So if any viewers are in need of a break that does not smack of traditional respite I would highly recommend them. I've just had a week in the Cotswolds visiting The Roman baths in Bath, Hereford Cathedral and Gloucester Cathedral.

I'm curious about movie theaters where you are and how it's handled. The last time I went to the theater, the seats had to be reserved in advance and I had to reserve the squared of spot on the floor reserved for wheelchairs, there were 2 of these spots in the theater and if I wanted an actual seat, then I was supposed to reserve the space for my chair and the seat next to it. I was told this was because putting my chair anywhere else would be a hazard in case of evacuation. Ok, I understand that but for those that can transfer to a seat and find it more comfortable to do so . . . well I didn't like the policy. I absolutely needed to be in that back row because I couldn't get down the step. So what we did was I reserved my seat in the wheelchair spot and my husband and child reserved seats in the row below me, then when we saw the theater only had about 10 people in it, my husband came up and helped me transfer into the seat next to the wheelchair spot. They call those spots carer spots but reserving them is only allowed with the reservation of a wheelchair space and both spaces are full charge. I'm in the USA

I'm in Ny state and the ACCESS program there is a program that works at the state parks for free parking and sometimes discounts on overnight stays or other programs, I think it's a every 2 year renewal, but it's possible that is just for children that there's such a short period before renewal (my kids both have it). I think there's something similar for the National Parks but there aren't any national parks close to us so I haven't looked into that.

Yes, there's an Access Pass for National Park Service sites, and the benefits range from getting free entrance for sites that charge an entrance fee (more and more are getting rid of the entrance fee, but many still have one) to getting half off camping, plus a bunch of other things. It's free to get (if done in person - there's a postage fee if done by mail) and never expires - all I had to do was show my ID and an official letter stating that I had been diagnosed with a disability, and that was back when my mobility was still 100%, so you don't have to have a mobility disability in order to get one. I got mine at the entrance station in the Tetons the day after the eclipse in 2017 and have used it at 30-something NPS sites since then. You can get them at most NPS sites, but not all, so contact the park you're going to ahead of time to make sure they issue them.

I never knew about the Winter Fuel Payment, I always thought it was for people who were born before a certain year. That's so interesting! I'm hoping to get my first motabilty car in the next year or so if I'm lucky enough to get my provisional license 🤞they refused me last time because of my POTS

Winter fuel payments really depends tho, i got it in 2020 & before however they changed the rules now you need to qualify AND your property has to have a efg rating of d or below. My apartment is rated b, i have higher costs due to needing heating and to recharge my electric wheelchair but i no longer qualify apparently. Have a friend in the same situation, her husband uses a mobility scooter and both daughters have dla but they don't get winter fuel payment as her house is rated c. I believe that rented housing nowadays HAS to be at least rated d to be able to be privately rented, so unless your renting a rated d home, all other rented homes would mean you don't qualify for the fuel payments

Anyone who is planning on visiting Pembroke Castle, they allow a supporter for a disabled person to get in free. Also fairly accessible as an attraction, as long as you can get to the Castle itself OK

Any advice for Parenting (Particularly pregnancy and new baby) As a lady with limited mobility? (I can walk a small amount but rely mostly on a wheelchair outside the house) I've just found out I'm pregnant with my third baby (My older 2 are 6 and 8 years) and I was more able bodied with my elder two (Needed to use my crutches or walking stick on occasion but had a lot more mobility) And I don't know where to start, especially as I get bigger. EG Reaching for things in my wheelchair heavily pregnant, getting the baby in and out of their mosses baskets, prams with limited mobility ect.

Hi Gem, I love you and your family and I love your content. I know that not everything is perfect, or seems to be, about the aid, health system and culture of people with English/European disabilities, but I confess that my dream is to live there and to be able to fight for these rights as they seem much better to me than that we have here in Brazil. Just yesterday I spent just over 6 hours in a public emergency care unit and left there without being able to do all the tests and without being referred to a hospital or any other doctor and with yet another diagnosis of thrombosis in my leg. It was extremely exhausting and frustrating. Here we do not have public policies for people with disabilities that are as effective as they seem to be and what little we do have is very difficult to access even though we have legislation regarding these topics. a big hug! 💞

Approach local theatres and check out their own policies. They also do free carer seats. Local carparks can be free if your vehicle is registered with the council, and blue badge, so means not just limited to road parking though extremely handy being able to park close to destination. Register with Transport for London, and places like Dartford Tunnel for more discounts. Can register two vehicles I believe.

In the US most insurance won't cover any mobility aids or equipment needed for work (even when the insurance is provided through your job), only equipment needed for "activities needed for daily living," needed in your home; or needed to get to medical appointments. It's very strange.

Pretty similar in Australia, mobility aids for in house use like rollators, don't know about wheelchairs. Some help with equipment at work from government, but given crap involved you may be better off buying your own.

Rule one lol, choose your colours (or maybe you spell that 'colors...') the point is the colours of your wheelchair etc. carefully choose them, unless you are stuck with red... I personally would not get it in red but when I think about it red is actually fine. 2 get some lights unless it comes with it... either way you look at this rule, point is to be visible if you are using a flashlight/torch like someone who has no disability. I know the UK etc. does not say flashlight but anyway point is have lighting... and some reflective tape to put on the chair etc. Some people have an orange flag too. 3 When misusing sizes, they will try to adjust to the size they think your body will become as you might gain weight be mindful how they measure you, that is a hard one and I did not even want to go into it. I personally gained some weight and then later lost most of that but that is just me I can not tell you what is best for you, the point is be mindful, not that I want someone to over think that. Just be aware.

If someone lives outside of the UK and has the equivalent of a blue badge, are our disabled parking tags honoured if we visit England or how do we go about getting a proper badge? When I’ve visited Canada, my tag was honoured without question. That works in reverse, too. It just sounds like it is difficult to obtain a blue badge as a resident. I just wondered about what a tourist would have to do. Thanks!!

I've had to buy all my mobility aids. The only things I got help with was sofa raising blocks and a raised toilet seat. My shower chair, bed raising blocks, wheeled stool (tattoo artist stool), wheelchairs (manual and folding electric), sticks, crutches and walker/rollator I had to get myself. I've had to spend the best part of £2000 (couldn't afford really good wheelchairs) just to be able to do basic life stuff.

@bexie1992 I am a 100% disabled war veteran who has got things from the VA, thank goodness. My legs are paralyzed, and I have many, many things wrong with me. The heart doctor says that I shouldn't lift anything over 15 or 25 pounds. I have a wheelchair that is heavier, but the VA won't invest in a lightweight wheelchair for me. I am 77, and I don't have the time left for it to bother me.

Carers UK. Sign up family members or those who help care for you. They are interviewed usually over phone-asked questions related to caring for/duties etc…if awarded…They get their own carer card which is acceptable as proof for visiting places, they also get discounts all over the place, various stores etc and there us a wellbeing payment to enable them to undertake an activity for their own mental health…they bought my hubby a bike so he could go enjoy a cycle during his down time.
