You need to drop the fish at your feet, then you can chop it up with a knife. Once you have the cooking hut up you need to unlock recipes yourself. SO cook 1 of everything ex. add 4 onions and 4 water then do it for any veggies or meat you have. After that you can assign worker to make those soups.

Thanks matt, I did eventually work it out. I must have been having a daft moment because dropping it and harvesting it makes so much sense!
