On average in Europe, only 30% of workers in the agricultural sector are women. Women have more difficulties than men to access land, to access capital, but also to fit with the machinery, that are tailored for men.
At the same time, women are, in the literature, identified as being more inclined to adopt sustainable practices and, to some extent, as key enablers of a sustainability shift in the field: research shows that women are disproportionately more likely than men to operate farms that engage in forms of sustainable agriculture, such as for example organic farming and direct-to-consumer sales.
Promoting and ensuring that women are able to dedicate themselves to agriculture, as well as to be represented in an equal way in the decision-making bodies, could help the shift towards a more sustainable agriculture.
