I was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 as Security Forces for the USAF. We had some Brits on the base with us. We weren't allowed alcohol but apparently the Brits include it as part of their required equipment. I was BSing with some guys on patrol one day and tried to get them to trade us for some beer, but we didn't have anything they really wanted. Then like a week later, I saw the same guys on patrol again. They stopped to chat for a bit. The guy I had talked to before sees me and says, "I was hoping you'd be on patrol today." He goes to the back of their Land Rover, pulls out a case of beer and puts it in the back of our hummer. I asked him what he wanted for it. He said, "Nothing. You guys are keeping us safe. Enjoy it." I was blown away. I can't even describe how generous that is. So, the Brits will always bee cool in my book. Cheers!

I hate how they say the US has only 11 aircraft carriers and they always don't count the 9 helicopter or vertical take off carriers, so 20 carriers total
@Canthus1329 күн бұрын
The amphibious ships are mostly there to support marine ship to shore and air support for amphibious operations. They're basically shipping platforms with hospitals for MEUs. The closest to a 'real' aircraft carrier would be the first 2 America class ships that don't have well decks. But all of them are limited in capability. They're slow, at most carry 20 Harriers or F-35s, and have a limited endurance. In the more traditional aircraft carrier roles, they kinda suck.
@laziojohnny7929 күн бұрын
Agreed, although 'technically' they are different classes of ships, in other languages (Dutch and German e.g.) they have different words for them to distinct the task of the ship. But they never distinct the different frigates either so yeah, kinda weird.

I'm 65 years old, and this is how my generation grew up, under the constant threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. When I was in 1st through 3rd grades (1965-1968), we had regular "civil defense" drills in case of an emergency (tornado, nuclear war, etc.), and certain buildings had a Civil Defense emblem displayed to indicate fallout shelters. I can understand younger people who haven't grown up in the "shadow of the mushroom cloud" being afraid, if not terrified. When we were involved in the Vietnam war the US had a draft. I know because my mother worked at the Draft Board. Young men were required to register for the military when they turned 18. This was not voluntary. Some went to Canada to escape the draft. This was also the era of The Cold War between the two world superpowers, USA and Russia. They both had nuclear weapons and the threat of war was scary. Funny fact: the school children would practice "bomb safety" by getting under their desks for protection. (Like that would help) I pray the conflict in Ukraine is ended without a war. Big boys playing with deadly toys is frightening. It's a pissing contest.

Everyone had to disassemble, clean, and assemble a rifle and learn to shoot it. Plus, the Cold War talking points were everywhere. And the Iron Curtain, similar to the current North Korean ban to travel out of the country. But nobody was scaring people with a nuclear war possibility. Maybe because of the Soviet government arrogance, or because there was something else they wanted the people to be scared of instead. Kind of similar to the current UK, where a person can be jailed for a post that Starmer doesn't like. An 18-year-old got 2 years for standing with a British flag next to a mosque. Cannon, like on a tank shoot direct fire, straight at the visible enemy like 3 kilometers. The ropes on the back of the guys jumping out of the helicopter were rip cords, they open your parachute automatically. The reason the Russian instructor was looking at everyone's cods was to insure they had their harnesses on correctly. А если говорить о срочниках, то они даже присягу за две недели не примут. И это не говоря о том, что срочников законодательно запрещено использовать в зоне СВО. Putin literally wants to recreate the old Russian Empire just like a certain mustached man wanted to do with Germany and Europe. Just like that man, I doubt their ambitions would stop there. Their side learned not to commit racist war crimes, we learned not to wait. That's the only difference.

@lettersANnumbersonly Albert Einstein was an optimist. We have enough nukes today to cause a 10 nuclear winter and even after that, it would take decades before things near climate normal. And most plant life will have died during the nuclear winter(no Oxygen production) Regardless, we've several 1000 nuclear reactors of which nearly all will go Fukushima/Chernobyl. And with no one to intervene will spew massive amounts of radioactive isotopes with half lives of 50k years. Near all life land and sea will cease to exist. Chernobyl would have devastated most of Europe without human intervention. Both Fukushima/Chernobyl increased the average radioactive levels in the world. The U.S. playing silly mind games doubled the claimed safe levels of atmospheric radioactive levels in the world(signed by Obama administration) Anyway, WW4 won't be fought by sticks and stones if WW3 is nuclear. That's right. That's what I said. IF WW3 is nuclear. It doesn't necessarily have to be. WW1 wasn't nor was WW2 though the later ended with a double bang.

the ropes are attached to their parachutes, so they don't have to pull a cord, once they jump and fall a specific distance (for example the end of the rope), it opens the parachute. it is mainly a safety thing, so they are not pulled too soon, which can cause the soldier to get snagged on something or someone, which could lead to their death, or pull too late which could lead to their death that way too. it is just more efficient that way.

Also its past its glory, I'm still wondering how on earth we look at our untested army, and actually be so overconfident? We blew up some dingies, and get excited, what? We won Iraq, 1 major war, but even I was corrected during a business meeting like 3 years ago in Switzerland for a business consultation, a Swiss opened my eyes. Iraq went to war with Iran with our support, then went to war with Kuwait, we switched sides and helped Kuwait, and then we attacked them over nothing. We almost lost the war against the Brits, France helped us. We suffered the most casualties in a month in ww2, not even against Germany main army that got destroyed 2 years earlier before DDay. We lost in Korea after almost winning, and we lost all operations after that. We can't even finish off Afghanistan. We lost in Vietnam. You can give me a bunch of excuses of government this and that, but our full strength are spread out, over 500 bases worldwide, navy can't actually just leave their ships and the airforce would require tons of fuel we currently do not have. Defensively we are strongest in the world, yes I'm confident in that, but against Russia, their entire doctrine are different than us, we build 1 that can do it all, they build 5 to do them separately. Think about it, we need to blow up 5 vehicles, they only need to blow up 1. And current conflict, we showed them what we got, with only very few exceptions, f22, full spec A2s, Paladins and B2s, the rest we have given and proven, inadequate, 3 Patriots missiles missing 1 su34? Su 25 no longer in production still flying about? Against our patriots? Overconfident in our ignorance would be our downfall.

You can calculate how much powder, and the trajectory to know where it'll land at what distance. The more you do it the better you get. There's towed, and self propelled artillery. Self propelled looks alot like a tank and usually has defensive things such as smoke, flares etc. it also usually uses a computer, and it's controlled by computer. There's smart rounds and clusters bombs, and cluster mines that can be shot out of artillery. High explosive rounds etc.

The US actually does have a Gatling gun on a jet. It's the legendary A-10 Warthog, which is still in service. It's designed primarily as a tank killer and sweeping ground enemies off the map. In other words, its primary role is for ground support. They can fly VERY low below the flight deck, and can even stay airborne safely with only one wing. However, the new version is coming out very soon with crazy upgrades, primarily the helmet the pilot wears, and guidance systems. Other than that, not much has been released to the public. You'll know one's coming when you hear the BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT from the center-front mounted Gatling gun. As for the Naval forces, we have the Carrier groups. The Carrier formation groups consist of multiple different types of naval vessels, in a specific pattern to take out anything that threatens the carrier. Remember, the carriers' biggest defenses are to detect/block enemy signals, and unleash air superiority via the flight deck. This could take forever, so I'm gonna stop now.

Not too long ago i saw a video that some russian soldiers had posted to telegram about their equipment. The armored plates in the soldiers vests had been replaced with squares of plywood and thick sheet plastic. The helmets werent made with ballistic protection and were actually airsoft helmets. The active armor bricks on their tanks had been replaced with bricks of clay. The tourniquets they were provided were from china and produced oout of some material that snapped like they were brittle instead of being able to made tight on a limb. Much of their ammo were pitted with rust and corrosion, and their arty shells were so old from storage that the shells fouled the barrels extremely fast and had the tendency to explode in the barrels about 40% of the time.

the reason why recruitment is down, and some people make not like hearing this, is because the military's purpose is to maintain readiness for war. war... not pillow fights or fights over who will use which bathroom. the people who want to be in the military are prone to having a certain mindset and they typically want nothing to do with identity politics in the military. if leadership is more concerned with naming the first trans four star general or female to the joint chiefs, then recruitment will continue to suffer. soldiers want to know that their country has their back in all practical ways. look at recruitment ads around the world, just for an example. also, it's a great idea to take out russia's munitions factories and foundries... but outside of poland and maybe italy, there isn't a single western government that would have the stones. 95% of the western politicians are a bunch of neville chamberlains and putin is the modern shitler. they may say nice things about ukraine and send second or third tier weapons, but they also (especially the US until about a week ago) will restrict how ukraine is allowed to use those weapons, forcing ukraine to get very creative with limited man power and resources. but, now the US has lifted restrictions on how ukraine uses the weapons we provide, and that is exactly why russia launched an ICBM at ukraine yesterday. long story short, ukraine is fighting a war that the west no longer has the stomach for. and the same people (politicians) who want to race to make recruitment more "equitable" and meet certain quotas, and tuck soldiers in at night and have pillow fights for training are the same people who are all too happy to send ukraine weapons that will drain russia slowly for us, but won't allow ukraine to make a decisive strike. we are happy to see millions dead and wounded and will facilitate it on both sides, as long as we can stand on the sidelines and watch.

If they try to pull a draft, do you really think American kids are gonna show up to go die in Ukraine when they can’t get jobs and and can’t afford a house nope or every afford a family? American kids will tell them to go jump in the lake, but Trump’s not gonna do that. KamelToe would have. American kids are not going to World War III bank on it.
