One thing that I've noticed when traveling in the UK and Europe, is that y'all have really thin mattresses. 😅 It took me some getting used to at first and my back always gets pretty angry when it's been away from my 14" thick mattress at home. Y'all have really flat pillows, too. My bed pillows are more like 3 of yours combined. But, as they say, everything is extra in the good ole US of A! 😂 🇺🇲 🇬🇧

Porches, decks and patios are pretty common and popular here in the US. Porches are usually in the front of the house and have a roof. Decks are usually on the back of the house and are uncovered. Patios are flush to the ground and made of stones, usually. Porches are used for sitting outside and socializing. Decks are usually an extension of the kitchen. People will eat outside on the deck and also will cook. Patios are for chilling often with a fire pit at night. This is all just my experience though.

In the US, a "Settee" is a two-seat sofa. Furniture stores commonly sell "Living Room Suites" that include a matching sofa [three or four seat], settee and arm chair. The term "Davenport" came from the Davenport Furniture Company in Massachusetts.

When the Murphy bed was first being used they had a tendency to fold back up with you in it. They put a small chain with a hook on the end of the bed & hammered a bent over nail on the floor to hook the bed to, so you wouldn't get folded back up into the wall. Yes , people got stuck in the wall & had to scream for help to get out. No, you couldn't move the bent nail. Yes people broke their toes on it. Yes, this is true.

Murphy beds are great for small spaces. They do have motorized ones that fold up at the push of a button, but those are insanely expensive. I have even seen where the Murphy bed has a flip down desk for when the bed is closed in the wall unit.

Sofa, Couch, Sette, Loveseat for a 2 seater, a davenport is a specific style. That's the inside of a box spring, it's used for a double height bed, some bed frames also set in rather than on so you use a box spring to elevate the mattress above the framing. It lowers movement, increases support without reducing comfort and provides height to the bed. Porch swings are front porch things in the south or rural midwest, back porch is more common in the north or west coast but a lot of areas don't even have porches let alone space for swing in general. I love Murphy beds, they are great for small spaces where every inch counts, they are making a comeback because of population.Adirondack chairs are annoying, but it's also cozy

My grandmother (born in the 1920s) would call a couch a davenport. A boxspring is below the mattress and is a wooden frame with springs in it. This is then set onto a metal frame. However, there are "platform beds that just use the matress. A garden her eis a place you grow plants (vegetables, herbs, flowers) a lawn is an expanse of grass. You can have both in your yard. Or you can have "desert landscaping" or xeriscaping which is drought resistant plants.

After retiring from building houses, i started building lawn chairs as a hobby mainly, but then people began asking me to build them lawn furniture sets. It was fun and i created my own plans and styles to the point i began making one piece picnic tables with the table and chair all made into one unit. Then later i started building them to resemble stagecoaches etc... The seats or benches would be built similar with curved backs and seats. I also built heavy duty lawn furniture i called 'Sturdy Boy'. That was years ago but sometimes i still think about re-starting. It's a lot of work for a 72 year old man with back injuries though, so i probably won't. I liked your video. Thanks!

When I was little, my whole family - aunts, uncles, cousins - would gather at my great-grandmother's house for lunch every Saturday. After lunch, in warm weather, the big entertainment was sitting on the front porch, talking and waving at passing traffic, (it was rural North Carolina in the '70s - there wasn't much to do). The first spot on the porch swing was Great-Grandma's, and my brothers and I always raced for the second seat, beside her. ... That's a good memory you brought back, Adam. Thanks.

The Murphy bed: 1885: Sarah E. Goode, an African American inventor, patented the first cabinet bed, a precursor to the modern Murphy bed. Her design allowed the bed to fold up against the wall, providing a space-saving solution for small rooms. Late 1890s: William Lawrence Murphy, a young inventor from San Francisco, created the first modern Murphy bed.

We got a Murphy bed for the bedroom we use mainly as an office. It was kind of stupid-expensive, but helps keep the space in the room for office chairs, desks, etc. We just pull it down when we have enough guests to use all three extra bedrooms, like when our kids come visit. When it's folded up, there is a couch that sits in front; you pull the cushions off the couch when you fold it down. And yes, due to the angles and structure, "Adirondack Chairs" are shockingly comfy, despite usually having little to no cushion. A friend of ours (who lives up in the mountains) has several around the fire pit in his back yard, and I've fallen asleep in one of them more than once. 😋

Yeah we use the word settee but usually only when we’re referring to a two seater couch or another word we use is loveseat. So a loveseat and settee are one and the same here in central Illinois. The other thing I will mention is a settee is usually a piece of outdoor furniture. We have some outdoor wicker furniture and when we bought it 20 years ago the two seater couch which we usually call a loveseat was called a settee when we purchased it. I know others who have a settee outside but most two seater indoor couches are called loveseats. At least that seems to be the breakdown here in our neck of the woods. We call sofas a couch most of the time but we do call them sofas sometimes and we also call them a sofa couch sometimes. Settees are usually called loveseats when they are indoors and settees when they are outdoors however they are sometimes called by either title whether indoor or outdoor. Murphy beds come in all kinds of decorative designs that are made to be a space saver in a small area.

Interesting thing about porches. My parents owned an old “colonial” waterfront house in Maryland (Chesapeake Bay) where the back faced unbelievable water and sunset views, but only the boxed in kitchen and original servants quarters faced the back yard with the views. The family room and the front porch faced the relatively busy street as it was common or normal for folks to sit or hang out on the street side porch where you could see your neighbors and all the “commings and goings”.
@patricialavery82702 ай бұрын
Couch. My dad's generation used davenport. Front porches are used for more socializing with non-family or casual friends. Like maybe the cliché of the teenage girl and her boyfriend. It is a public area so more formal behavior is expected. Back porches are for more intimate gatherings, family ,close friends, maybe a trusted co-worker. Typically a back porch would be where any alcohol might be consumed, at least in my family. In California where I am from porches were less common, at least in the post war housing I grew up in. In The South before A/C porches were used to escape the heat of the house in the evening. In Texas a roofed over porch or veranda was preferred, to avoid the intense sun, rather than an open deck or patio, though those exist.

You put your sette in The Parlour. I say that in a really snooty tone. I don't know how much it happens now but my grandparents you always had the best looking Sofas in your front room or parlor and you weren't allowed to sit on them because they were so nice. So what people would do is cover them with plastic designed specifically to put over your sofa. I say sofa more than I say couch. We also have pull-out beds. Those are couches or sofa that when you lift up the seat cushions you can pull out a mattress or that doubles as a bed. We had one in our guest room so when people came to visit they had a place to sleep and when the room wasn't being used it went back to the sewing room. The thing with a Murphy bed is that you use it so that you can have more space which means at night you have to move everything that you put their like chairs and a coffee table so you can pull out the bed.
