Hi Sonny, I'm a fan from Taiwan! I just wanted to clarify that we don't really eat shark fins these days. We believe shark fins mainly add a sticky texture to soup without much flavor, and eating them only contributes to the endangerment of sharks. While a few restaurants might still serve shark fin soup, it's quite rare. Things are improving. Thanks for your awesome food reviews!
@commenter48983 ай бұрын
Shark fins are certainly still quite common at high-end banquets. Those rich people don't care about the environment. It's not about making the soup sticky, the shark fins themselves have a nice crunchy texture. The stickiness actually comes from pork skin and other stuff. Also it's a status symbol so the very idea that it's an expensive ingredient make people want it.

For reference, A Joy dinner costs $120, tax already included but there will a 10% service charge that's common in higher end Taiwanese restaurants so it's around $132 per adult. Top Las Vegas seafood dinner buffets (Wynn & Bacchanal) cost between $75 to $85, add tax (8.38%) and tip (let's just say 15%), that's just about $94 to $106 per adult. I'll admit it's been years since I've had buffets in Las Vegas, I've had Bacchanal prior to Covid twice, I was not impressed both times. I've had Wynn once and honestly I can't even remember what it was like anymore, it was just not memorable. Aside from the fact I just can't stuff that much food anymore, for the price I'd rather spend the same amount for better quality food than what's being offered in Vegas buffets. A Joy opened in July 23, I was in Taiwan for 3 months but left in April so I didn't get a chance to try A Joy but I've had InParadise buffet (most expensive weekend dinner around $72 per adult) from the same parent company and even though InParadise is not the same tier as A Joy I still enjoyed its food more than Las Vegas buffets. My impression of Las Vegas buffets is plenty of choices but little or none done well except maybe desserts. Taiwanese love their buffets, there are many price range and types of food to choose from, the most special must be the all vegetarian buffet, must try if ever in Taiwan, it will change your perception of what vegetarian food can be like forever. Most high end buffets in Taiwan will cost about $70 for adult and there are many options around $50 or less, lunch/afternoon/dinner/weekday/weekend/holiday can all have different price. Most buffets also sell discounted meal tickets online similar to Groupon, having locals to help to buy these at discounted price can mean additional savings. Taiwan is a great place for foodies, maybe it's best known for night markets but that's definitely not where you will find the best foods, see one night market and you've basically seen them all.

@adrian.y85632 ай бұрын
@@NoonNeko Hi, the cheap buffets are really common around here so I might wanna ask where you'll be heading so I can suggest some. The one I last went to was in Yilan. The one he went to should be in Taipei. Try using this term on Google Maps "平價吃到飽" There are also many types like Mongolian barbecue, hotpot, vegan etc so you can choose which you want to go to. The vegan ones are actually very impressive since they are mostly run by dedicated Buddhists who specialize in making vegan cuisines. They usually charge very little in order to "give back to society". And since Taiwan's Buddhist population is very impressive, vegan food here has developed to a point where you can't taste the difference between normal food. Hope this helps, ask me anything!
@adrian.y85632 ай бұрын
@@NoonNeko Sure, I might need to know the city you're visiting though. Also, there are various types, like barbecue, hotpot, sukiyaki, vegan, etc. I really recommend the vegan ones since they are made for Buddhists since they are purely vegetarian. Taiwan has a very large Buddhist population so you can easily find vegan restaurants, vegan buffets also cost very low since most of the owners want to "give something back to society". And also because of this, Taiwanese vegan food has perfected to a level that you won't taste any difference from non-vegan food. Try and search "平價吃到飽" when searching on google maps.

1:50 That is duck blood, not pig blood. The texture of pig blood is a little harder, while duck blood is a little softer. Duck blood is commonly used to cook hot pot or stew, while pig blood is usually only used to make pig blood soup. , add pig intestines and leeks, very nutritious and delicious! Perfect for replenishing energy! In Taiwan, duck blood is usually made into a round and flat shape, so the shape will be rounder after being cut into pieces, while pig blood is long and square, so it has edges and corners after being cut into pieces, and it is still square, which is quite easy to identify.

Oh man, these both look fantastic. I'm also from Minnesota, Sonny, and while you probably weren't here when they were around, there was a beautiful midranged hot pot store in the Har Mar Mall area that was the first time I got to see you order and get to cook it all at the table yourself! I absolutely LOVED it, especially since a whole pot practically fed me for a day. Sadly COVID ran them out, since so much of it was the communal and dine-in experience. I really miss them. The owner lady was so nice and I was there so often she used to sit with me sometimes and tell me about her family and her store and all sorts of stuff. It was SO much fun! So I absolutely LOVE the idea of that cheap hotpot place! To go in, kind of knowing what you want already, I bet you can get your selections picked up super quick. I've always LOVED the lamb, shrimp, cabbage, tofu, those enoki mushrooms...really I love a ton of the veggies and meats, but especially thanks to this show, I am absolutely raring to try things like bloodcakes. I've already grown more fond of liver, heart, gizzard, and eaten a whole roasted small quail thanks to here! The options here look fun. Just in case you do see this, I was curious if they allowed you to just pay for another "visit" if you ran your time out, or if you had to leave. But for the BIG BUFFET!? Holy SHIT! Like yes this would take some time to save up for, but this would ABSOLUTELY be birthday lunch/ celebration lunch material. The absolutely INSANE amount of different options was just mind-blowing and the sheer quality of not just the food, but the service, and presentation was absolutely amazing. Sadly I'll probably never make it to Taiwan XD, but if I somehow find myself there, I know exactly what I'm going to try!
