Coffee w Buckskin Dave Forgotten Calibers 50 90 Sharps 'The Big Fifty'

Get some coffee and join me in my journey to get a good black powder load in the Big fifty. This could take a while I have used the stuff I have and need to get some different stuff to check out some more loads. All shooting is done on my dedicated range.

I've been playing with 105 gr. 1f goex in my big 50 2 1/2 inch case. Fed 215 large magnum rifle primers and. 060 wad behind the traditional lyman 450 grain bullet. No compression after drop tube. Very tight groups out to 250 yrds if little wind. 2f and 3f might be getting that bullet moving too fast for that light bullet. 1 f should slow it down a bit. Good luck and enjoy. Love your show!

I want to try some different stuff, waiting for suppliers to get stuff in. Seems like it likes 1300 fps with smokeless so I would like to try some 1 or 1 1/2. Thanks for your comment

If you still have some Hodgdon CFE Black that may be a smokeless option. Its burn rate is between Accurate 5744 and IMR 4198.

Do you use cream of wheat to take up space between wad and bullet?

I work it out so there is no gap and it is compressed a bit, If you want to down load it with black powder you might have to put in a filler. Thanks for stopping by

@@BuckskinDave Thanks Dave...I was thinking thats who you were getting them from. I've shot a few animals with this rifle, 4-5 bison, moose, muskox, antelope and it's ok accuracy wise with 90g FF.

The Lee 515 grain works real well with my .50-70 pan lube no sizing . 65 grains 2f or ctg. Grade goex . Win large rifle primer.

@@BuckskinDave I don’t know what alloy you’re going to get but my experience is that the bullets that I have bought from suppliers are always way too hard for my gun the ones that I cast I use wheel weights with a little pure lead tossed in nothing real scientific but it seems to work so much better with a softer lead not real soft but a medium hardness.

@@BuckskinDave I hear ya on the molds had a great one made by Mountain Molds wish he was still in business but the inexpensive Lee mold I bought to experiment worked great too. 20-1 is good place to start I just don’t like those super hard stuff never worked for me even with smokeless. Soooo. Many unanswered questions. What's the twist rate of your barrel? What's the diameter of your bullet? And too many more. My load is a 664gr. bullet cast in 20/1 lead. 97grs. of 1-1/2 Olde Eynsford a .30 veg.fiber wad. Win. Large rifle primer. Size the bullet to .510 for a modern barrel. Your using a light bullet with a fast burning powder at about 1600fps. on a cold very dry day at altitude. Not a formula for success.

Accurate velocity seems to be 1300-1350. I believe I need a bit heavier bullet which I am gonna try next. Takes a while to get things these days. I would like yo get my hands on some 1 or 1 1/2 F too. This gun is gonna be fun to to figure out. For me this is the most interesting, and expensive, part of shooting these things. Barrel is 24 twist C Sharps.
