That’s an urban legend, she never won any drummer of the year award. It started with people claiming that she won playboy magazines, readers poll for best drummer in 1975 but in fact she came in 10th. She barely did any drumming for them, so don’t make silly statements and try to pretend that she was somehow a better drummer than John Bonham and Ginger Baker.

Closer to You was released in 1970. She is fantastic and there are many other songs. You saw her playing drums. She was a great drummer before she was a great singer. There is a KZbin video titled - (Karen Carpenter Drummer) - that is from a college competition, that shows how good she was. (The Dick Carpenter trio won the competition) Also, Through the magic of electrics, they were their own back-up singers and choir. -- You might like Greg Lake's solo performance of - ("Still... You Turn me On" from the Calif Jam 1974.) - Then all the girls when I was in High school loved David Gates of the group 'Bread'. His looks and his voice. Many hits including "Make It With You" - "Baby I'm-a Want You" - "Guitar Man" - "Diary" - "Aubry" - then there was "Goodbye Girl" that was used in the movie by the same name.

Back in the day when record companies found the best song writers to produce hits for artists to record. Great song writing and arranging. I think Karen's brother Richard did all of the arranging. He is the genius behind their unique sound. By employing an arranging technique that utilized multi-track(invented by guitarist Les Paul) recording he could create that trademark sound of thick chordal harmony with his and Karen's voice. I remember falling in love with their sound as a 14-year old high schooler. Two voices sounding as a full choir with lush harmonies. The "hook" of the song Close To You is a great example of this. Burt Bacharach composed many of their best hits such as Close To You.

Of all the Carpenters videos out there on KZbin, this is my favorite. It's very early in Karen's career and they haven't over-done her makeup and hair yet. @@arwen450 That is a very dangerous and overly simplified explanation on her or anyone's eating disorder. Very fitting of 80's America type of explanation coming out of Hollywood/LA. Mental health issues are rarely so simply explained and often those in need of help tend to become worse off by others trying to over simplify their needs. People with eating disorders may have genetic, psychological and emotional problems that contribute to the disorder. They may also have low self-esteem, perfectionism, impulsive behavior and troubled relationships. The list goes on and on. Early help and detection of mental health is also easier said than done. Asking for help can be scary, expensive and embarrassing for many which saddens me. I've often found strength in those who ask for help. Peace/JT

@@johnthompson6374 Sorry that I did give a simplified explanation.. it is what I have heard in the '80s about her passing away... in Belgium they wrote that she passed away because someone told her she was looking too fat on television and she needed to go on a diet. You are right there are many more reasons why people develop anorexia in their lives . My apologies. . Thank you for explaining it better than I did.
@johnthompson63743 жыл бұрын
@@arwen450 No apologies' needed, it's all good. I'd like to point out the way many choose not to notice the real issues of mental health for so many over here in the states. To admit the problem would mean to try and help with the problems that affect so many of us. Sadly, greed keeps our country from helping our fellow man. You should see how we treat our veterans let alone children in school that have trouble with no fault of their own. Sweeping mental health issues under the proverbial rug has been the law of the land for a long time but the more conversations are had about it the more light gets shone upon it. Peace/JT

Karen is absolutely gorgeous here (1974) and just joyously having a great time on the drums (Cubby O'Brien is also tearing them up behind her... he's terrific too). She's really enjoying herself. There's much sadness expressed here on KZbin about Karen's struggles with anorexia. I get it. It saddens me too. But let's remember this side of Karen as well. Beautiful. Beautiful voice. Awesome drumming chops. Here's the KZbin link (remember to advance forward to 16:50): kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGqYXq2jhdeKa7s
