You may see hype, but I've never seen a biz merger with main aim of lowering prices. Rather like I've never seen a couple marry with the main aim to improve the work performance of each. Companies and couples merge for their own reasons. This falls under 'duh'.

We can’t delve deeply into Koch Industries because they’re private. However, publicly traded companies are driven to maximize value for their shareholders, and if you have a 401(k), that includes you. The relentless push for increasing profit is an inherent feature of capitalism.

I'm a cattle farmer in Mozambique. We are not producing sustainably. Between the cost of fuel and animal medicines, tractor spares and everything else; we do not get enough for our product. This seems to be a global problem. Without the farmers: society collapses. This is a historical fact. Why are we allowing this to happen.

Many ranchers in USA are attempt to market directly to the people. Trouble is there are criminals taking advantage of this by selling high and selling bad product. They fool the unsuspecting new purchasers of direct food sourcing. I have bought bad products at farmers markets. Very bad. It's hard for an average person to know who is a criminal and who is a legitimate sellers of healthy good food products.

The catch is that corporations have hedged their bets by convincing half the people in the country to put their retirement funds in the hands of the stock market. Anti-trust enforcement will adversely affect those funds, so there will be a backlash. The sinister loop will be closed and locked if the pressure to privatize Social Security is also successful. It has taken us so long to wake up to how lopsided our markets have become, so be prepared for a tough and painful fight.

Anti-trust enforcement is the medicine this economy needs to avoid escalating prices at the supermarket. You are taking money out of the hands of the bottom 98% and putting into the coffers of the top 2%. This is not a sustainable model for our economy, eventually you are going to have those funds adversely affected when no one can afford goods or services being offered!

Anti-trust laws exist because we've been through this before. We've had monopolies and a few companies in charge of everything. It led to massive income inequality and a crashed economy a century ago. Corporate consolidation simply doesn't work. Yet here we are again. Making the same mistakes over and over. A hundred years ago it was Carnegie and J.P. Morgan. Now it's the Koch family. We learned it then, but we forgot.

Poor people are getting poorer and rich people are getting massively richer. You ask what the government has ever managed to run efficiently, but what government-run services have ever been improved by being privatized and subjected to the free market? Corporations will do anything, say anything and step on as many necks as they need to to make their next dollar. Private citizens like the people in this video can’t stand up to that. Why in blue fuck should a factory be sold to a private corporation to further enrich them, at the expense of the people the factory was supposed to help and who paid for it with their tax dollars? This is both True and false while the farmer has few friends between the Elevator, the bank, the seed man, fertilizer, equipment sales man, water rights/ (if this applies), increasing taxes. but, in many cases the farmers inability or unwillingness to adapt, or there very poor management of finances is often there biggest enemy. I Have been in agriculture for the majority of my life, with the exception of 6 years I spent in construction.

If we aggressively taxed the wealthy it wouldn't even begin to cover the cost of our hyper expansive military and it would lead to further de-dollarization which would make the average American poorer in the world-scheme. Fix the educational system and get rid of the Mansfield Amendment so that Americans can innovate again and look forward to better outcomes again. Reform universities so they can exist as centers for the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom for its own sake again. Not to mention in my area we all had small farmers: 140 acre homesteads, 35 to 40 milk cows, a handfull of beef steers then in the 90s they all got pushed out by consolidation. I would have gone into farming if I hadn't watched everyone either give up on farming or have to get a full time job to support their full time farm. Then shortly after crop rotation seemed to die out in favor of just spray the daylights out of everything. Once that started happening, mutated frogs were everywhere, diversity of bugs fell off a cliff. I moved on and now every time I go back to visit family I don't see anything for birds, bugs, butterflies, bees, etc. Oh and everyone seems to be dying off to cancer.

Because so many people overpaid for homes even while loan rates were low, I believe there will be a housing catastrophe because these people are in debt. If housing costs continue to drop and, for whatever reason, they can no longer afford the property and it goes into foreclosure, they have no equity since, even if they try to sell, they will not make any money. I believe that many individuals will experience this, especially given the impending mass layoffs and rapidly rising living expenses.

They split their farm up amongst family so each gets that subsidy to go along with rice they do grow. It seems to work out great. If there’s any chance of undoing the control the super rich have on our country, everyone must vote Dem up and down the ballot. One person here wrote, “Jews,” as if he thinks they are the problem ( think Hitler much?). Well, Koch isn’t Jewish and most Jews do not vote republican. Some do, like the billionaire Adelson, but most Jews know better and still remember Hitler and the Holocaust. Trump is leading us into another crisis and we will lose our democracy if we don’t vote Blue. Farmer typically vote republican and republicans have given us this mess.

Corporate consolidation is harmful to American farmers for this exact reason, but the agricultural practices that we have been employing are harming them as well. High reliance on costly inputs such as farming equipment, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, to make a subsidized cash crop that gets sent over seas or wasted, all while expending our nutrient soils and polluting our waterways. Coupled with mass urban development and destruction of farm lands that will never be productive again. While corporations profit at every level of the supply chain, leaving regular taxpayers and farmers with the bill. It is insanity, we need a fundamental change in our agrarian practices.

Propaganda and/or borderline propaganda is far too legal. You can't entirely blame people for this happening, especially when you have only two parties with a first-past-the-post system. I tried to find some stats. The reddest year (relative to blue) in the past 50 years was 51.3% red in 1976, 38.6% blue (i.e. 10% other). That means at worst 38.6% of people have voted blue. A large number of voters are susceptible to information manipulation. It's everyone's responsibility to stay informed, but it's the government's responsibility to prosecute lies and misinformation, and it's a corporate prerogative to drive information that furthers their cause (profit). If we can improve all 3 areas: people being more engaged in well informed voting, government being stronger in enforcing its anti-evil policies, and corporations being less incentivized to seek profits over anything else (impossible when the other factors allow greedy people to take the wheel and stay in control), then things will improve. This is a long comment, but it's all to say that Lina Khan is clearly doing well to address this. By being stronger in representing antitrust legislation, AND doing community outreach, she will help drive the first two factors. Democracy and capitalism NEED these checks and balances to keep greed and profit in check. The capitalist creed of "the free market drives innovation" is worthless when the innovation stops serving the people. The free market maximizes it's most numerically impactful parameter, and for too long that's been shareholder earnings instead of lifespan, quality of life, poverty rates, and education. The FTC is doing a great job to re-balance the incentives by dismantling anti-people companies.

My take on this: A lot of these farmers probably loved Ronald Reagan and his presidency. Yet Reagan began the process of gutting the power of the FTC and many other govt bodies that have regulatory authority. We all know as stated in the post that there is a problem, and that problem started when RR ran roughshod through many govt agencies, stripping the teeth from their ability to 'regulate'. The free market is easily manipulated by large corporations with powerful legal teams that twist things up making people think one thing is happening, when it is actually the opposite! Think about the Air Traffic Controllers Union, and how to this day our airports are understaffed for both controllers and pilots. Have their been any near misses lately? Also, Reagan's 'trickle down' theory has directly caused the concentration of wealth to shift from the many(i.e. the middle class) to the few! RR was the original union buster! Ask yourself How the Koch Bros got so rich? Ronald Reagan began the process that put us where we are today!

Compost requires more work, but it provides tangible results in terms of yelds. And rotating crops too. All takes an extra amount of work. The featured farmer does not seem the type person who is inclined to do the extra amount of work. This is how soil structure and nutrient makeup becomes poorer.

Farmers have done very well in years past. They too have reaped the rewards. I live in the largest agricultural county in Ohio. We have 8 times the legal limit of phosphorus in the soil in my county. Liquid manure spread on frozen ground. Which runs straight into field tile. Destroyed lakes, pond, streams, rivers and drinking water. Algae bloom that is dangerous to humans. Drinking water that contains carcinogens. The sad part is many farmers don’t care what the environment is telling us what is going on. Lastly, the Koch brothers is one of the largest donors to the Republican Party and MAGA. This is exactly why regulations are important. Obviously, some farmers can’t do what’s right and govern themselves. County Commissioners are farmers. So don’t look for help from any of your county elected officials.

Unnecessarily?? Ethanol is a cleaner fuel source, then pure gas. If anything they need to mandate, more ethanol mixtures. If you took ethanol away, corn would dropped up under two bucks a bushel. It would completely crash the farming industry. We over produce as is, one day in the future it will be a good thing we have so much farm land in the US but right now we could let 20mil acres of corn sit and everyone would be happier.

Very well put! The famers in my area are all far right. I blame the church and the endless, relentless propaganda that is designed to make them believe the Democrats are their problem, all the while the right is helping these corporations. It makes no sense to me. Now we have a republican party bent on stealing the election while accusing the Dems of same. Their own members have said they have been captured by blackmail. 45's own people have said he is dangerous and even a Russian asset. Still these people bury their heads in the sand. Irrational behavior and perceptions. It keeps our country broken. Irrational, uninformed, cult following voters who thrive on hatred and have no desire to educate themselves or become a better human. I think the fact that Bobert and MGT got reelected says volumes about where the real problem lies.

Like how the Chips and Sciences act gives massive subsidies to chip makers to build plants in the US. Taxpayers don't own the plants, we just pay for 30% or 50% or whatever amount is agreed to to build it or waive taxes on it for 10 years.

@@tm9388 The US “Farm Bill” gets re-authorized about every 4 years. It contains Federal Crop Insurance, which is heavily government subsidized crop loss protection for farmers. The Farm Bill needs Democrat support to keep those government insurance subsidies in place. So regardless of what their politics seem on the surface, many farmers vote democrat.

Worked for a farm in SD for a few years, 30mil in profit,"demo" equipment, subsidized selling prices, and the corn and soybeans grown weren't even for food. I'll never feel bad for these farmers.
