Thanks for another trip with the "More than Farmers" family. I am 70 yrs old and been eating potatoes that have had the sprouts removed as long as I can remember. And probably before I could remember. Also you can plant those potatoes this spring, or whenever you plant your potatoes. They do just fine. Use your smaller one and any that are green. Just a suggestion.

I grew up and Quebec and Maple syrup runs through my veins! Planting the right kind of sugar maple is key and if you have the property for it that's awesome. It is a tricky science but folks have done it for centuries. My 16 yr old niece has been tapping their trees in the Laurentians since she was 8. She is the one planning and drilling the location of the spigots each year. Boiling down takes a lot of time and patience but once you master it, you end up with gold! Here in BC it doesn't get cold long enough and we don't have the right species of trees to do it. It is a large part of my childhood. Memories of spending time in sugar shacks with amazing Maple syrup drenched food and Maple candy (Tire) drizzled on snow, rolled on a wooden stick will forever be cherished.

Try Vine Maples in BC! They don't make as much sap, or as sweet, as Sugar Maple, but they definitely make a delicious syrup. It's a little more... Tree-y? But it's good 😊

We have always eaten sprouted potatoes as long as the inside was still white. When you buy potatoes, those little eyes are sprouts. A lot of people don’t think that eating the skins is good either, but we always have. When I was a kid, if someone was peeling potatoes we would beg for the skins and eat them raw. I love raw potatoes.

I'm also guessing that the higher oxalate content of potatoes is (?) mainly found in the skins. This could explain it, for those sensitive to it/having issues. Many who feel better on the carnivore diet are finding that Oxalates are their problem. For some, there's hope that after a healing period of a year or more, they can once again eat them in moderation. Others may have to be super careful, our livers just don't deal with it as well or something.

I'm anxious to see how your seedlings turn out. I also love how you've included your children in the process of growing and preparing everything. Even if they don't choose to follow in the Homestead fashion the confidence they aquire is life changing!!❤

It’s crazy that you have to put disclaimers on information. Seriously the lack of personal responsibility from people is astounding. For the record I eat potatoes that have sprouted. If it looks and feels fine I’m not throwing it out. That’s crazy.

Green or sprouted potatoes don’t necessarily equal solenoids and you can find solenoids in non-green potatoes. Plus you gotta eat a whole bunch to get really sick. You’d get more sick from eating that many potatoes. I totally agree with you, poor content creators who have to add disclaimers to everything for people who can’t be assed finding stuff out, but then complain when they stuff stuff up!

We’ve done maple syrup for many years. It takes at least 50 gallons of our sap to make a gallon of maple syrup. The neighborhood kids will come over and help my husband gather the sap and boil it down. It’s a lot of fun.

Can you explain why it’s almost clear? Like, when and how does it turn the amber color?
@NashRambler1968
@NashRambler1968 4 күн бұрын
@ . It’s almost clear because that’s how it comes out of the tree. It takes many hours to boil off the extra water. Some people use an evaporator to speed up the process but an evaporator is very expensive. For more details on the process I suggest Google how to make maple syrup and I’m sure YT has videos on the process.

I found those plastic spiles break after a season or 2. If you wind up loving maple sugaring, you can replace them with metal spiles that also fit inside the plastic tubing. That's what I did after my first season, and I've been very happy with them. I'd be happy to share a link if you need.

I love how you guys are always trying new things. This is what makes your videos so fun and smart. I have a young friend who taps a ton of trees on her property and we trade my honey for her maple syrup. I have never tasted such good maple syrup. I can’t wait until you try it. It’s amazing. I have a couple or more maple trees on my property that I should try to tap. And, fun fact! You can tap birch trees as well, but you have to drink it as is pretty much right away. I have been wanting to tap the birch trees as well. Happy Monday❤

As you mentioned, onion seedlings spend a long time growing indoors (10-12 weeks). It can be helpful to put some fertilizer into the potting soil and/or use liquid fertilizer when you water them. That way you’ll have nice big seedlings when it’s time to plant them out.

I just switched to this system this year after dealing with issues in the past. I’d recommend if you are able to place bucket on north side of tree and have the hose go around. This way on sunny days the bucket gets more shade which will help it to stay cooler and give you more time before the sap turns cloudy and spoils
@DYItips
@DYItips 3 күн бұрын
Also I used square buckets but I found I could run the hose into the corner of the lid and not have to drill holes in the lid. I want the lids to have more multipurpose uses so this allows that.

Great video again! Those potato sprouts have some value. The α‐solanine in them is a glycoalkaloid from potato tubers (and other nightshades) is now recognized for anti-cancer potential as well as anti‐allergic, antipyretic, anti‐inflammatory, anti‐diabetic, and antibiotic properties in some research. So, if a bit of those sprouts gets into your food or a bit of green on the skin, that may actually be a notable benefit in small amounts.

You're off to a good start, guys! I live in Vermont, land of maple trees and maple syrup, and I still get intimidated, when doing this on my own. Why? No reason, really, because I spent a few years on my friend's farm many (like MANY) years ago, riding on his tractor with him, and collecting the buckets, dumping them in the collection tank on the back, and bringing it back to their sugar house. Being up in the sugarbush was a mysterious, wonderful experience, and now many years later, I make my own syrup some years, even at 75 years old! I have 4 or 5 old silver maple trees, and made almost a gallon last season. But I still get nervous, thinking of gathering, and all the questions I inevitably find I have. You'll have a lot of fun, and do great, I'm sure--good sugaring! 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 I've been eating sprouted potatoes my whole life, as long as the potato itself is in good shape.

We did maple syrup for many years. Boiled it over a fire and just kept adding sap until it was dark enough, we ran out of sap or we ran out of energy. We did the final boil on the stove to have good control over the heat. It was the best. I think the smoke and odd bugs really added flavour.

Northern gardener here. . . I have to make my own onion sets to be able to get a storable onion harvest. Onion seeds don't last from year to year, so I plant the whole packet which makes so many starts but then I can only plant out the fattest ones the following Spring. I start them planted very closely in a small raised bed. Stop watering them as they are becoming marble size and let them dry out in ground. Once flopped over they are dormant. I pull them and let them harden off on a table in the garage for several weeks until all the leaves are dry. I cut the leaves off and place them in a net bag and store them in a loosely covered cardboard box in an unheated breezeway over my zone 4a winter. Air flow is important because they can mold, but you don't want them to fully dry out or be exposed to sunlight.

My struggle are sweet potatoes:( How do you start those?

I used to boil maple syrup the long way in a big pot. But, I saw a 'Health Primitive' pic one time where she puts down what looked like large cookie sheets on top of a couple of cinderblocks that are over top of some coals/small fire. You'd just slowly add more sap as it slowly dissipates the water out. It seems pretty practical with what most people already have on hand without building a huge sugar shack. Oh yeah...be careful drinking directly from the 5 gallon buckets...you're going to simmer / heat the sap anyway but usually you'd want to just pour it off if you want to drink the sap directly. Overall, what a great experience for you and the kiddos! Great video!

Another great video! We're on the journey together; with you the actors and us the audience!! I had no idea that the sap from the maple trees was so watery and clear. Who figured it out that it could eventually become a sweet syrup... the Indians or the settlers? Genuinely interested.

40:1 Sap:syrup. So if you want to make one gallon of syrup which might last your family for a couple of months. It is going to take 40 gal of raw maple sap

Why are you not planting your own potatoes that you grew? Don't buy seed potatoes just use your own. Do not pull those Sprouts off the potatoes those are the ones you want to plant. Pick smaller potatoes bigger than an egg then an egg perhaps the size of a turkey egg would be perfect to start your own potatoes. I've done it for years and it's fabulous😅

We do the same but we’ve found that if the sprouts get too long they don’t do as well. Those potatoes will produce more sprouts and we try to time it for when the ground is ready.

Same, I haven’t bought seed potatoes in 10 years! I just replant the ones I didn’t eat in the winter.

@@NashRambler1968as an experiment… I left the long sprouts on my potatoes last season. I mean the sprouts were probably 7-9 inches long. Best crop of potatoes I have ever harvested!!

Growing onions by seed is the way to go. So so easy to get 100s of onion plants in a small amount of space for little $. I like to start different varieties. I noticed huge differences in germination rates and onion size based solely on variety as all the onions were all were treated exactly the same. Try diversifying your onion seeds

If your onions grow too big too soon, can you put them in your little greenhouse where you have your greens? I don't know if they would grow or not, but you could make it part of your experiment.

Have done maple syrup 2 of the last 3 yrs exactly like you're doing now...5 gal buckets, tubing & spiles. Actually, I had 4 metal spiles but in my resourceful way, made more out of ballpoint pen parts. Yes, you'll want the holes in the lids small to make a tight fit to keep out water & dirt, but don't be surprised when you find ants & tiny gnats finding their way in. Just scoop them out. They don't drink much.😅

We homesteaders are a funny bunch regarding trying new tasks. It becomes a tiresome ego battle of our desires and fears. But we can end this battle by simply asking can this task benefit our kids. When the answer is yes, we can do it confidently..

I drill my bucket hole in the side of the bucket, just below the bottom rim of the cover. That way, the snow melt doesn't go into the bucket. I put rocks on top of the lids. I hope you got food grade buckets. Food grade plastics are made with a different release agent in the plastic molds at the factory. And even food grade buckets should be washed with dish soap to get bacteria and oils off. I need to check my notes for when to start my onions. It should be coming up. Onions are heavy feeders. Give them nitrogen. I use chicken manure when they go outside and regular soluble nutrients inside when seedlings. I use chicken manure at planting and then again just before they bulb. After that, the soil biome feeds them. They also like intense light indoors. You do not need big pots for onions. I use 9-cell packs. They are small. Each cell can grow 3 to 4 seedlings. I can fit hundreds in a seedling tray. I broke my sprouts off of my eating potatoes recently. The potatoes are fine to eat, but the sprout's are toxic. If you want a fun project, plant some sprouts in potting soil. (complete buried) They will grow into plants. Do not pull off sprouts from your seed potatoes. Instead, cut them back to be 1/4 to 3/8 inch long. Potato plants will be bigger from primary buds (the initial thicker ones) than smaller later ones. I need to get my buckets ready for Maple season. I boil in a roasting pan on a turkey fryer propane burner outside. I put outdoor chairs on their sides around it to keep the direct wind off the flame. On aother note, my fruit tree seeds are sprouting. If you have seeds stratifying, be sure to check them often now. Happy boiling!
