This song brought me to tears. I remember coming home from Afghanistan on my last final deployment before leaving the Corp. I became a heavy heavy drinker. Drank to rid of my demons and bad memories in my 10 years in the service. I was hurting people around me. I cussed at everyone for trying to help me. The final straw is when I tried to commit suicide by hanging with a suicide note pinned to my shirt. My GF came home just in time to cut the rope down(I was already hanging there). I'm now 3 years sober and regularly attend VA group meetings.

I served 20 years in the US Army. Been through 5 combat deployments, seen my brothers die, injured and I have been in some deep shit. I made it home and I carry a guilt everyday that I made it home and not them. I struggle every day but I have a beautiful family that I am thankful for. They help me each day to love the life I have. This song hits deep but speaks the truth. Yes we may seem abrasive, even called dicks and assholes, no one understands it but us. I love my country and will do anything for her. God bless all who have served and all who continue to serve. Remember everyday on this earth is a good day.

This song and video hit me square in the heart!!! After being hit with a hand grenade in 2003 and then being over prescribed antipsychotics instead of someone just listening to me talk I turned to drugs and vodka. 3 years ago I met the love of my life who has given me a son and a daughter since then. It hasn't been easy by no means but I've been clear headed and clean for 6 months. This will be our first dance song at our wedding 100%!!!! Thank you for bringing light into the darkness!!!

I’m reading the comments and most seem to be a veteran telling their story. I give a different perspective. I’ve been a Marine/ veteran wife for 21 years. Been through moving every couple years, to deployments, war and everything in between. The hardest thing to do is trying to love someone through their pain. I always tried to make him talk to me, but no matter how he tried, I could never understand what he had seen and been through. He never drank when he would come home, sometimes I wished he would have, maybe it would have calmed him down. I would try to get him to go to the VA, but he would say he didn’t need to. After a few, for lack of better term, breakdowns, and the last one almost causing me to reach my breaking point, I talked him into going in to talk to someone. I’ve been lucky, he is/was the strongest person I know. He fights his demons every day, and according to him, it’s not easy but it’s worth it. He knows I will always try to love him enough to drown out the bad, but on the days I can’t, I will always throw him a life vest to bring him back up. Semper Fi!

Man, this video is very powerful. 12 years I've been home from Afghanistan, and I still struggle, sometimes in ways I'm not even aware. My wife has loved (not tolerated) me through the deepest and darkest moments of these last 12 years. It took me nearly 9 of those years to even acknowledge that something was different (not wrong). PTSD does not mean we are broken, although to us and others it seems that way. It's a natural neurological response to shit we've seen and done. I like how this video focuses just as much on her love and patience with him as much as it did him. Unfortunately, this is a G-rated version of how it looks sometimes. Thank you to everyone who are patient and understanding to your loved ones because I know from outward appearance it does not seem they are worthy sometimes. I feel not worthy almost daily. 🇺🇸

A family with a long line of service stretching back to the Revolutionary War, and as the last of my family name and a veteran myself I would say we all deserve our portion of respect. But it's the combat vet that takes the hardest hit, to include their families. Scars that never heal, memories that never fade, and a heart that never shrinks. Heard this song may times and it always struck a chord with me, but I never felt the connection till I saw this video. To all my brothers and sisters out there. Salute!

It really is true. It is not the same here. I appreciate the song and what it has done for Vets. Cant even listen to it without crying. It is hard for us to talk to people sometimes. You feel separated, numb and just put a face on so everything seems normal. I have lost friends in combat and friends due to suicide. I wish the entire country would stop asking what is wrong and instead just offer a hug, a warm embrace, a kind gesture. Too many of us are left out to hang and I dont speak for all Vets. But at the end of the day I would rather have a conversation, maybe a shoulder to cry on. Instead of just constantly being looked at sideways. Thank you Morgan for bringing this song and continue the path. Semper Fi

The words "thank you" will never adequately express the magnitude of gratefulness all veterans, military persons, and their families deserve for their sacrifices. This video brought me to tears, and I can only pray those who have fought, and/or are currently fighting for the freedom of our nation, will know they are appreciated, from the smallest of towns to the biggest of cities. ive been playing this song over and over and over and even when its not playing its on repeat in my head ill be honest just hearing it immediatly brings me to tears or atleast damn close, guess its what i need most in this point in my life, lost my way and at times feel as though im losing myself, my wife and kids i know they can see it, ive been slowly secluding myself and withdrawing from family events, we live in the sticks down here in this beautiful bluegrass state of ky, the only peace ive been able to find lately has been the view off my poarch 19miles straight to the ky hillside, in my shop tinkering or working on something, or the third and the thing that is giving me the most peace,,,, music......i cant really explain it but man when youve been hit soo hard by life that you feel your "soul" was injured thats where im at and music is life for me right now....listening, playing and now writing.....if I could ask your permission I wanted to do a cover of this song, im trying to step out of my comfort zone again and try and break this cycle .....ive got to get back to the husband, father and friend that I was, 29 years old and at times i feel like a stranger in my own skin.. ps sorry for the grammer errors just exhausted and wanted to get this typed and get back the playlist

Yeah, But this song has nothing to do with soldiers or PTSD or any of that stuff. It’s a song about addiction and getting better, despite all of the bad you’ve done, and knowing that there is someone out there that loves you for you, So don’t feel as if what you felt is invalid or selfish. This is just a video to a song someone covered.

My favorite song! I'm married to a disabled Vietnam veteran recovering alcoholic who relapsed and has now succumbed to even more addictions. I've never given up on him even when he gave up on himself - until now. I've rescued him repeatedly and gotten him to a hospital twice that they said he would have died had I not intervened. He demands I leave him to the life (or death) he chooses and the verbal abuse, financial ruin, and lack of anything remotely similar to being grateful to be alive other than obtaining the next fix compel me to realize that as much as I have tried, I will never be his hero and I must leave him in God's Hands. For all I've been through with him, I realize that I will never know the horrors that many of these brave souls have suffered. And though no words could ever express adequate appreciation, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

@Linda McC I too loved a man that suffers from PTSD and no matter what all I tried or done had to face the horrible reality this past January that I would never be able to hold him together or be all that I wanted to be for him. He is the love of my life and always will be without a doubt I'm sure, as we also do share the most amazing human being together born in October of 2009 our son Brayden, and I can only put his life in God's hands now and just hope and pray with all that's left in my soul that He won't let anything bad happen to him so he can still at least be the amazing father that he is to our son...this song has always brought me to tears and now seeing this video it only proves exactly how much none of this is to be taken lightly because the man I fell in love with for 12.5 years battles the same demons day in and day out to this day and he served in 2006 and lost one of his brothers in Iraq in 2009 also and he will never be the same...I begged and I pleaded with him multiple times and even more so last year at this time to please find the help he needs no matter the cost I was willing to do it with him and be by his side as I always had been I told him I would drop whatever I was doing right then and take him wherever he needed to go that our family and his love and his life meant that much to me that I would go to whatever lengths I had to just to save him and our family! He refused and I held on longer than I knew how to anymore until January of this year, hardest damn thing I have ever had to do was let him go but he had already let me go long before and I know I don't understand it all and never will but he still means the world to me and always will no matter what I just hope one of these days he will be happy that is all I want for him in this life and I just fear he never will truly be happy again in this life bc of what he went thru and is still battling to this day but I do know that I can never ever thank him enough for the sacrifice he made while serving this country and is still sacrificing every single day that he wakes up and realizes he is still living in the hell that is PTSD, not only that but he gave me so much more than too, the most amazing and sweetest child a woman could ever ask for and the opportunity to be his mom and is hands down the most beautiful and precious gift that man ever could have given me! I love you Brayden Leevi, Momma loves you son more than my own life 💙 and u r what makes living the most precious thing in the world to me and also falling in love with your dad the best thing I could have ever wished or prayed for too. BKD I know you don't think I do bc of everything but I do love you more than u will ever know and always will thank you for your courage to stand up and fight for this country and our freedom bc u knew u couldn't just sit and talk about it and not be about it all those years ago 💖 You did what so many people wouldn't and couldn't do and for that you will truly always be honored and appreciated even after you are gone...you still are and always will hold a special place in my heart and will always always be mine and Brayden's HERO ❤🤍💙

How this song can change. Listened to this years ago and loved the brilliance of the heart behind Wallen's voice. If he only recorded this single cover, he'd have done something so great that it's worthy of saying he did something amazing in his life. An artist who created a masterpiece. I still feel the same way. Since then, I've become a founder of a non-profit. Not sure it will ever be successful, but the loss of my friend left me with a choice to try and help others not be taken over by the dark of depression, or to do what most do and give a bit here and a bit there, and hope that I can make a difference that way. Watching such an amazing soul be ruined by PTSD, depression and likely a list of other things... is heartbreaking. He took his own life last year (2023) and ... Watching this video now, floored me. First time I've watched it since my close friend left. I'm one of the lucky that didn't get exposed to the trauma that others did. I did back to back tours, but far from danger. I have nothing but respect and remorse for those who have been through much, much worse. I have my own traumatic events, my own depression to deal with, but I feel I'm among the lucky that can offer what I have to those who need it. If I was allowed one favor to those who read this far? It would be that you do the same. When the times come to keep walking, or turn back and lend a hand... if it could one day make a difference to just that one person, give what you can.

This is definitely my favorite song (even though it's a cover). I showed my mom this video because my father is a vet with really bad PTSD. She cried because this video portrays what its like living with my dad. He is a remarkable man, that's for sure. Although he struggles at times he tries his best to be the best dad and husband he can be. After showing my mother this video she told me that the reason my dad started going to VA meetings was for me. As his PTSD became worse our relationship took a turn and he just wanted to make things right with me and try to be a better father no matter what he had to do. I definitely regret a lot of things I have said to my dad especially when his PTSD was set off. I wish I could have spent more time with him and talked to him more throughout high school and now that I am in college I don't have the luxury of seeing him everyday.

I found my dad in his truck in Feb 2018. He used his 12 gauge and used his snow brush to hit the trigger and shot himself in the chest. Had pictures of me my sister and my 2 kids all around him in the truck. He was diagnosed with cancer that morning. During the autopsy they found it was just an infection of his prostrate and not cancer. He watched his 3 Brothers and dad be eaten down to nothing by cancer before dying and always said he would go on his terms if he ever got it. Havnt been the same since. My 2 best friends since public school that were Irish twins and both born in the same year took their own lives as well. One when we were 21 In 2010 and the other in June 2023. It’s hard to comprehend it all.

Combat didn't get me though I was in combat. What damaged me is 28 years of being a paramedic. All the scenes, the stress, the death, the stories, the 72-96 hour work weeks. Every day is a battle to just survive. I lost the one who used to "Cover Me Up" to early onset Dementia, which has absolutely devastated me. I don't know what to do or how to cope, but somehow I get up and go back. I used to think that life had a meaning but now I I think life is shit! I can see my old self, the guy who enjoyed life and all it had to offer, but I can't bring him to the present. I just want her to "Cover Me Up"!

Love this video. I understand completley both sides of the PTSD issue, first responders, soldiers in combat, rape, child molestation, etc. the more than many catagories. But please understand this when I say that veterans, mostly those of us who have been in combat have crossed a line where we took life!!! It is not the same as as other PTSD types, it's a line that no matter how hard we try to forget, try to go back to when we were normal, we will never make it back! We can only start from where we are and move forward. For those who have been in combat - taken life, saved life only to lose it right before us, you can do what I did. I turned to the LORD OUR GOD, I put it all, and believe me it was a lot in the hands of Jesus and let him fight those inner demons as we often call them, it's His job, and He is glad to do it, you have only to first believe. Then go and get help, there's plenty of it out there, the VA, private sources, but damnit get off your ass and go and get the help you need!!! I did a total of 15 years between USMC, US ARMY, we who stayed in Europe have nothing, no VA help, only for those who stuck it out and retired, otherwise nothing. That's why I wrote to you about Jesus, He is everything, healer, counselor, shrink, everything wrapped into the guy who died on your cross, when He sat at the right hand of the Father, HE BECAME YOU!!! So when the father looks at you he sees Jesus His Son and you. Remember the part where Jesus spoke the words " I AM IN THE FATHER, AND THE FATHER IS IN ME " " YOU ARE IN THIS THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT, ALL THAT THE FATHER GAVE JESUS HE GAVE YOU, REACH OUT AND TAKE IT, IT'S FREE, THE HEALING BEGINS WITH HIM, THE COUNSELING BEGINS WITH HIM, YOUR SHRINK WAS PROVIDED THROUGH HIM " Remember GOD made some men first responders, doctors, lawyers, HE made us the shooters of our generation, we did our jobs well, it was costly, nervey, downright disgusting at times, but we did our jobs well. Now it's time for some healing, it sits on you, you take the first step, and I guarentee you HE will lead the way, ALL THE WAY, AND HE WONT NEVER STOP OR GIVE UP ON YOU, EVEN WHEN YOU GIVE UP ON YOURSELF, HE WILL KEEP GOING STRONG AND FINISH THE MISSION OF HEALING YOU AND BRINGING TO THE PLACE IN LIFE HE WANTS YOU TO BE, A DEVOTED HUSBAND, FATHER TO YOUR KIDS, RESPONSIBLE SON OR DAUGHTER, MOTHER TO YOUR KIDS, BRINGING YOU TO BECOME A LEADER FOR THOSE WHO HURT FROM WAR!!! I counsel many people this way, also MUSLIMS, BHUDISTS, both military and civilians those affected from war in Europe, and those I have helped from Africa. I won't quit because Jesus never gives up or quits. He never gave up on me, and I know He never will. Take the plunge and believe, your family will see and know the difference in you before you will. Thanks, sorry it's so long. richardsoncliff64@gmail.com

My Father is a Veteran. He brought home a lot of bad things. Things I couldn't control but learn as a child. I was able to join but I've always wanted too. I'm 34 and still willing to join. I have a family to protect plus an entire country. Every time no matter how many times I listen to this it's all tears. I have many friends who came back not the same person who still struggle till this day.

This is my life! I came back from fighting war, and started fighting everyone that loved me... it must be a hard thing to damage everyone that loves you! I used to love and live happy and now I just stay stoned and ruin relationships, bc guess what? That's how I push myself away! And keep up my fighting! It's hard being a warrior in a society that wants the wars but no longer needs the used up warrior.

A lot of people don’t realize that ptsd is part of how something breaks you down and causes trauma in many shapes and sizes. The army specializes in this so they can shape you into what is more useful for them, to then throw you away like an old toy once they did what they needed to with you. This can happen at home as well with things that want to scar you for life. The thing that helps more than anything is seeking a mindset that nothing in the past matters & you want ultimate happiness in your life looking forward. Working with yourself with the help of God to strengthen your mind, and realizing that you can only make your best years ahead of you if you want to.

It was written by Jason Isbell as an ode to his beautiful And talented wife, Amanda Shires. Jason was an addict and spiraling. She loved him but was not going to be with him in that shape. He loved her and when she had an intervention, he got clean and has been since. It’s not easy but this woman stood by and for her man. When he sings “but I sobered up, I swore off that stuff, forever this time” his fans cheer every time. It’s on the album Southeastern and is the best album you will hear in a long time.

Heartbreaking! My husband served 3 tours in Iraq. And, the toll it takes on their bodies and their minds.. unbelievable. Unfortunately, our marriage didn't survive. I spent 13 years trying. I just couldn't do it anymore. I still feel like I abandoned him somehow. But, unless someone has lived with a person with severe PTSD, they could not even begin to understand how hard it is on everyone involved. I had two children to think about. And, their safety and happiness will always come first. As it should. My heart goes out to people who live with this struggle. It's not their fault.

Thank you Brother for shining a light on the mental war that PTSD has left those of us who came back from war with. This video brought back the "real" for me, but it's one more blessed day I spend with family and in a country I got to come back to, but not all were that lucky. Love us or hate us, we fought, we served, we bled and some died so all of us can live in this great country of ours. So never forget the sacrifice of a few for the many. Much Love to All, and especially you Morgan for shining a light on this. Peace

When I first heard this cover a while back, i gathered a great amount of respect for Morgan Wallen as an artist. And even if you weren’t a fan of the “bro-country” ‘Up Down’ performed with FGL, I promise the rest of his “If I Know Me” record is amazing. But no matter who sings this song, only Jason Isbell’s could really break me down as you knew he was coming off drugs and addiction which was ruining his relationship and for him to write something so vulnerable, respect is due. Jason Isbell’s voice breaking in “Cover Me Up” is one of the most heartbreaking things to listen to.

I lost my husband, December 8th will be 5 yrs. He died at 50 bc of alcohol. I can identify w the first verses.I had just gotten out of a 13 year relationship with my two teenage son's father that beat me for 10 of those 13 years. I was the heart on the run. I made through bc somebody knew I was meant for someone. That was mean. The second verse are both me and my husband. He was 12 years older than me, a bachelor from upstate NY in East TN met the girl who was strong enough for him. The verse but home was a dream one that I'd never seen til you came along. That was Scott he met me and married me but no other woman wasfit til he met me. The verses cover me up and use me for good reminds me of the many times he told me and everyone that I made him a better person than he was before he met me. The last verses so cover me up and know your enough, after a 13 year DV relationship, I had a lot of PTSD I guess is the right title but he should me how true love is supposed to be. I was enough for him. We had a little boy. My 3rd son and last baby! Nicholas our son was 5 when Scott died in our bed room that we didn't leave until the hospice nurse(Medical help) came. I don't know maybe it's just me but this song brings out all the good hate or in other words grief. Everything is bittersweet now. East TN girl tamed a NY bachelor cause no northern girl could loli miss him so effing much still almost 5 years later and in the blink of an eye it's December 8 2019 all over again.

So you know I sang it to him on way home from his 3rd DUI jail stay and together because of God n you Mr Morgan Wallen with help from lil. Faith n Fate he to sang it all day everyday singing it humming it in our home till evil murdered him too. Because of this I know together we did get him home to his family he lost so long ago n God bless Mr & Mrs Casteel for allowing him to forever laay at peace n rest lying next to them up on that hill! ❤😢😊 Forever be blessed

This song hit me hard. I'm not a soldier. So thankful for our soldiers. Me and my cousin Derek would cling to each other as we tried to make it through our childhood. We were and are brothers. We were beaten and broken down. We were so close. Derek at age 15 was put through violent and sadistic trial he broke started huffing paint trying to kill himself . I tried to stop him he was my brother he left me in the hole to fight on my own as he left to walk the streets as a sombie. Try to help he would just run farther away. Today I don't know we're he is I catch myself thinking and praying for him. I've never gotten over it and that was 25 years ago. I'm just thankful now for every day that God his son Jesus has saved me I know there were times I shouldn't be here, but God!
