She is a 5 feet 1 inch powerhouse, storyteller, genre killer (Rock, Pop, RnB, Broadway-/Disney stuff and RAP!). Her tone/ timbre and her breath control are outstanding. What you heard from Morissette is a Whistle Note/Register - Minnie Riperton is considered to have first performed a whistle note in her hit song "Lovin' You" 1974. Riperton is considered one of the most underrated vocalists in music history, and many singers who are trained to use the whistle register cite her as an influence. Sadly she died in 1979 at 31. On June 5, 1990, Carey made her first public appearance at the 1990 NBA Finals, singing "America the Beautiful". The highlight was the piercing whistle note toward the song's conclusion, sparking CBS Sports anchor Pat O'Brien to declare, "The palace now has a queen."
