This is GENIUS! While I have been tinkering and building in electronics since I was 15 in 1979, I never thought of using a transformer a a switch! I have ALWAYS wanted to make a dual channel VU meter with a single LM391x, but didn't know how to switch between the channels. But after seeing this it made me think - to make this battery powered, would a couple 9V batteries in parallel for current with a decent speed switching transistor work? Thanks for an awesome project!

You need two positive poles that work to provide current alternately 50-60 times per second to make a differential between Lch and Rch.

@@moristo Thanks for the reply! I was messing around with this last night. Was going to try using the 74112 flip-flop chip or a "hand made" flip flop with transistors and stuff... Still this is really an awesome project and It's kind of funny how some of the other posters say it's a trick or something. While I am not a genius, like you, it was still pretty easy to see that it is NOT s trick - it is AWESOME! It's too bad they discontinued some of those 391x chips...

Oh, I forgot, besides you need two positive poles that function to provide current alternately 50-60 times per second, you also need two gates that alternately open and close 50-60 times per second that synchronously with the two positive poles, that two gates will work for the audio sensor input section that alternately to enter R and L audio signal voltage level.

AC 50Hz supply. first +ve half on left terminal and second +ve half on right terminal. Based on that, this circuit works left speaker 25 cycle per second and right speaker 25 cycle per second. Single circuit but dual power input, dual audio input, and dual LED output. Wow this is grate....

You can use 6 or 9 volt CT transformer, You can expand 90dB for LM3915 (30 LED), in this video audio input connect directly to speaker.

I made a 7 band spectrum analyzer using single LM39XX...the technique is the switching which imperceptible to human eye. They're not actually simultaneously powered but due to speed our eyes are being fooled. Same to TV principle.

@moristo Yes, the system is not a LM39XX alone, there's another IC for freq assigned. But similar concept to your VU, only one LM39XX to drive seven 10segment LEDs. So 70 LEDs driven by only one LM39XX.

@@moristo I don't have bilateral sw. Counters yes as switching like this two transistors do. I can make using only two ICs but more expensive. So I designed another version using three ICs. Complex design but more compact compare to multiple LM39XX.
