I'm in the process of building a solid state preamp, and also reworking an old Dynaco PAS3 RIAA / preamp. I'm installing 'ground lift' switches in both of them allowing to connect power ground to signal ground or disconnect. I know it's a little bit off topic because it's Hifi, and not guitar amps, but the needs and the principles are still the same.

Coil split humbuckers are electrically equivalent to single coil pickups. They can be just as noisy. My Gibson Les Paul Classic has coil split capability, and the noise increase in that mode was quite noticeable. I decided to shield the control cavity with copper foil tape. I was surprised to find that the 3-way switch cavity also required shielding. The noise level climbed as I held the switch cavity closer to my body. After adding the foil shielding, the noise floor was greatly improved. There was even a small noise floor improvement in humbucking mode. Guitar manufacturers should shield all their guitars.

Hello, my name is Ventsislav Dosev, guitarist. I live in an old building from 1968. and with us, the electrical network has only two conductors, phase and neutral. Due to the fact that I don't have a third ground wire, my tube amps are buzzing and even my volume pedal which is in the Fx Loop is not working properly, it is not boosting evenly but all of a sudden. Will this so-called cable of yours work for me to eliminate the buzzing from the el. the network? Thank you!

There's a greater issue at hand with the missing ground wire. You could easily be shocked and seriously injured... That needs to be fixed immediately for your safety. Our Humno and Hum-X are designed to solve hum problems on the ground line, so if the ground is absent these are not the correct tool.

I have a dual amp head setup, both heads are rackmounted. I get what seems to be a ground loop and was thinking about trying Hum-X or Hum No. Does it matter which of the two amps I plug the Hum remover?
@MorleyProducts14 күн бұрын
You would just need one on either amp to break the ground loop. Before you buy, test for a ground loop like Step #3 in the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4e2aamdg9mmiZY Keep everything plugged in, but only turn on one amp then remove the power cable from the amp that's turned off. If the noise goes away it's definitely a ground loop. Depending on the space inside your rack the Humno might be the way to go as the Hum-X's shape can sometime block extra outlet space.

So, I’m using 2, 1978 Marshall JMP’s 50watt 2204’s. I use the Morley AYB splitter. There is some hum. Do I need 1 or 2 humno’s to solve the problem? Two identical amps, so they are in phase, I’m assuming.
@MorleyProductsАй бұрын
Nice rig! You would just need one to break the ground loop. If the power cable is hard wired go with a Hum-X. We also make an ABC Pro selector that's higher in price, but it's got a phase inversion switch, ground lift and isolation transformers.

Is it the Yamaha GNS-MS01 Speaker System? Since it uses DC with no ground prong the Humno or Hum X are not the right tool. Have you checked the cable? And is the power supply or cable running near another power source? Might just be EMI or a bad cable.

Best to look at getting a noise gate. That will mute your signal when you're not playing and reduce the hum.

Hello, thank you for your effort in this topic. I am having issue with my electric guitar directly connected to the amp and have hum noise. Noise is still there when I unplug the guitar, and noise increases if I move jack cable close to the power outlet. And it completely disappears if I unplug jack cable too. Will behringer hd400 hum destroyer with TRS cable to the amp solve my issues? I am searching for weeks and couldn't find a solution unfortunately.
@MorleyProducts5 ай бұрын
Sounds like you're getting EMI from the outlet power source. Do your lights have dimmers? Before you buy anything try moving your amp and cable as far away from the outlet as you can and see if that works.

I have hum issue that is not caused by the guitar. I have tried the HumX and it didn't help. Is the HumNO the same technology as the HumX or is it worth trying?
@MorleyProducts28 күн бұрын
The Humno is like a super Hum-X so if it didn't work the Humno is not the right tool. Can you elaborate more on your issue? Is it a consistent hum? And is it humming without distortion or lots of gain?
@mjsthx113828 күн бұрын
@@MorleyProducts It hums without distortion or lots of gain. It is pretty consistent. I believe it might be caused by appliances, however I am not 100% on that as it sometime hums even when no appliances are running.
@MorleyProducts28 күн бұрын
The Hum-X would solve a ground loop issue so we can rule that out. Is it an older amp? And does it hum when no cables are plugged into it? Might be cold solder on an internal ground or you're getting EMI from something nearby.
@mjsthx113828 күн бұрын
@@MorleyProducts It's actually a preamp that I run direct into the interface. I think I just discovered the source. The cable to the interface may have some issues. it seems to have gone away when I unplugged and plugged it back in. thanks for the help.

Does this also work for speakers and monitors and subwoofers?
@MorleyProducts Жыл бұрын
Yes, but we do not recommend it for subwoofers as those usually exceed the max amp rating. That said, if you have a ground loop you just have to break the loop so it could be placed on one of the speakers and achieve the same result.

How can the humno or humx work when the amp has only 2 core mains cable
@MorleyProducts7 ай бұрын
If the power cable doesn't have a ground prong the Humno or Hum X are not the solution as they filter hum on the ground line. Plus, without a ground prong you can rule out ground loop hum as the issue. It's likely either EMI, Pickup Hum or something internal with the amp like a bad component or bad ground.

Can a ground loop be created by two amps on the same power strip? If yes how is this possible when they have common ground?
@MorleyProducts Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's actually how we created the ground loop in the video. The "loop" is created when the second amp's grounded power cable is introduced to the connected grounds. This causes small interfering voltages to contaminate the signal. Ground loops can occur like this before the outlet, or after the outlet if there's improper wiring. Higher quality power conditioner strips can avoid this, but are pricey.
@MYGAS21 Жыл бұрын
@@MorleyProducts Sorry if this is a dumb question but... What do you mean with before and after the outlet? Are you referring to different power sockets in a house? If yes it's known that they could have different ground potentials, that create ground loops. What I don't get is how can the same power strip, bad or good, develope a voltage differential?
@MorleyProducts Жыл бұрын
No such thing as a dumb question :) To clarify, they can occur before the power cable reaches the outlet if you're using a power strip or multiple strips to connect multiple devices. Sometimes the location does not have enough power outlet inputs available. They can occur after the strip just as you mentioned. One of our longtime employees recalls playing on a stage that's circuit was wired with the kitchen so there'd be terrible hum until the kitchen closed. In the case of the power strip there's a closed loop of ground connections in which current can flow rather than two separate paths to earth.

What guitar cables have shielding that won't cause audio hum from transformers? there must be guitar audio cables that have a certain type of shielding so you can use them close to transformers. Why doesn't Morley make a Guitar Pickup Hum device that can filter out the noises and hum from single coil pickups.
@MorleyProducts Жыл бұрын
High end cables with proper shielding like the Gator Headliner Series are better at preventing interference, but it ultimately depends on the power of the source and the proximity. Transformers are just one of the many sources that emit EMI. We are not in the pickup business and the technology to completely eliminate single coil pickup Hum does not exist yet. There are brands however that make "Noiseless" single coil pickups that significantly reduce that Hum.
@JohnShalamskas Жыл бұрын
The shielding on a coaxial cable is electrostatic shielding. Transformers have a fairly strong magnetic field that is not stopped by electrostatic shielding.
@waynegram8907 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnShalamskas What Shielding would STOP the transformers strong magnetic field? since electrostatic shielding doesn't work
@JohnShalamskas Жыл бұрын
@@waynegram8907 Something ferromagnetic, like steel or iron, would shield the signal cable from magnetic (inductive) interference. That's not very practical in most cases, though. The next best thing is to run your signal cables as far away as possible from power lines and transformers . If you have to cross a power line with a signal cable, try to do it at a right angle.
