Having large, spacious buildings whose steeples violate zoning regulations are meant to be symbols of prestige and power. If you bully enough local city councils with lawsuits, maybe the rest will fall in line.

💯 agree And the Church has enough tithing from the people to take anyone to court.

I'm so fed up with the argument for hunkering down on high steeples when the church has already built temples without them.

FYI my son is reading Recovering Agency-- it was recommended to him by a friend. He says it is incredibly thorough and well-researched.

1:41 he believes the temple will impact the lives of the local people in a positive way and make them better citizens… Exactly how?? I assume we’re all asking a similar question… Does merely driving by a temple or being forced to see it through your window make you a better person? Is it somehow supposed to improve people’s character and outlook on life by having visual access to an lds temple? 🤔
@skyblueshaz6023Күн бұрын
He's hoping it will impact people in a positive way so they'll join the church and pay their way into the temple. That's what it's all about because they are a corporation with billions and they want more.

"Time only" temple marriages were something I new about only because of my great grandfather. He was married 3 times throughout his lifetime, and my grandmother would teach us about how he was married in the temple for all 3 marriages, but he was only sealed for eternity to his first wife. The subsequent two marriage s were for "time only" she would say. Any time I met someone or heard of someone who experienced this type of marriage it was always an elderly person.

aah - another 120-foot steeple battle. "The height of the steeple is part of our religious observance." [LDS memo to church members urging them to fight for the Fairview TX temple's original design]. If only . .

There's too much focus on a building! Spend people's tithes where it is most needed by helping those who are in need. If Jesus was here in body He'd be flipping more than just tables!

The fact that LDS missionaries are only called Elder or Sister is weird too.
@katie17330Күн бұрын
I've heard they are piloting missionaries going by their first names.

I'm in Australia. The one and only visit I've received from missionaries was back in about 1975. At the time I knew next to nothing about Mormons. These 2 smartly dressed lads came to the door and introduced themselves as Elder X and Elder Y. Being totally ignorant, I said something like "You're both called Elder"? Then they explained that it was a title, not a name. I thought they were quite young to be called Elder.

💯. The leaders don't talk to God because if they did God wouldn't be telling them to focus on a bit of steel! True messengers would be preaching the gospel not fighting for a tall steeple.

I've been watching pretty much daily now for several weeks. Very interesting and informative. I have two questions. How the heck does Elder Holland shave with all those folds and flabs on his face? Why do all the higher leaders use initials (usually middle but sometimes first name initials)? It all seems very pretentious to me. I NEVER use my middle initial and think that most ordinary people don't either.
@gazelam1973Күн бұрын
@greyshack I'm only speculating, but I think it my have to do with nepotism. Going back to the founding of the church, Joseph Smith,Jr. was the one who started Mormonism. However, his father was also heavily involved, and his name was Joseph Smith, Sr. Joseph installed many of his family members into key leadership positions. So when you read about the early mormon history, you come across a lot of Smiths. Joseph had a nephew who ended up rising up thru the ranks of momrmon leadership, and his name was Joseph Fielding Smith. However, he is referred to in the church as Joseph F. Smith because he ended up having a son who also rose to a high church position named Joseph Fielding Smith. To make matters even more confusing there was another general authority named Joseph Fielding Smith who was the grandson of Joseph F. Smith. So all total, there were 5 different Joseph Smith's who served in very high church positions. The only way to make any sense of it was to use middle names and middle initials. And this is only one family. This same sort of thing happened with other prominent early mormon families. So eventually, it became standard to always list their middle initial.
