I did trek in Tucson AZ in 1978. We only had to walk about 5 or 6 miles it was a 1 day event, and they didn't put too much drama into it. The cart we built fell apart and ended up with square wooden wheels at the end. The cart had been painted with creeasil wood stain, which was not fully dry so it got all over our hands and faces, then add really bad sunburns, 2 of my group had to go to the emergency room afterwards. I don't think we were really meant to be pioneers.

The church-wide trek wasn't started until sometime around the mid 1990s. Was this something that the local leadership put together?

Trek is dumb. So are the people who do it. If something bad happens out there you’re getting what you deserve. Do something more productive and less ignorant. Like a KZbin channel or something.

As a direct descendent of someone in the Hodgetts wagon train who froze to death about a month after giving birth to a child (who also died), the deaths crossing the planes feel real to me. It appears that they were promised (a leader prophecied) that they would not have snow on their path prior to setting off. While they may or may not have been aware of polygamy when they converted in Scotland, the boy who crossed at age 5 would grow up to be a polygamist. I wonder if things would have been different had his mother not frozen to death during that misguided crossing.

One of the reasons so many on the handcart expedition died was because Brigham Young was cheap, and would only pay the wagon builder for lower quality metal to go around the wooden wheels. So the wheels often fell apart and many were stranded. Bet the Morg doesn't mention that fact.

The pioneers were in a hurry because Joseph Smith said Christ was coming soon, he said 1890. Zion had to be established and temples built so they risked their life believing Christ was coming. What's mind-blowing, those people died in vain, the LDS church calls it a miracle. Those people should have never left the end of July. They were actually advised by an expert guide not to go. I don't think this was a religious sacrifice or close to a miracle. it just wasn't using very good common sense. Just saying. I also had pioneer ancestors who crossed the prairie and suffered to build up the salt lake City valley with Brigham Young. It was tough! The movie was 13 miracles, after watching it I thought to myself, that was one of the biggest mistakes. Sure there were miracles but those miracles got them deeper into the hell of their situation. They actually died in vain Christ didn't show up. Fear-based from the beginning.

Seems petty to think the trials weren’t that bad. I had relatives that died crossing the plains so for them the % was 100%! The diary’s of my ancestors crossing the plains were filled with unbelievably tough trials including death of family members. Taking light or down playing the sacrifices seems below the other wise good person you appear to be ( albeit with an obvious chip on your shoulder for the Mormon church ) I’m sorry for whatever happened to you when you were a member.

Your ancestors died because it was a fear-based. If they would have stayed back with Emma or just waited a couple more years they wouldn't have died, sacrificing their very lives for this fear based religion. What a huge price to pay. Christ did not show up like Joseph Smith said. You really need to do some research on the history and come up with some honest answers. Its like would have been like drinking the punch with James Jones. Not one of those people use common sense or thought about what they were doing they were so blinded by their leader. They were innocent wonderful people that became fanatical. I'm sure I lost a lot of my ancestors and maybe that was their journey and their life lesson. But the truth is it really didn't have to happen.

I understand what she's saying. Growing up I was taught a much higher number. Many Mormons from the '90s were taught that polygamy was necessary because so many men died crossing the plains. I'm sorry about your ancestors but they died for Joseph's created perversion and Brigham's dream to keep it going. There were members that broke off and abandoned polygamy and didn't have to come to Utah. These guys came to Utah to practice polygamy. Unfortunately for your family and mine, it seems like we were the ones supporting the polygamy which I'm not celebrating.

I think you missed the point and she did say not to downplay their suffering. The church never talks about how a great majority never pulled a handcart, and compared to those that were just alive at the time, your survival rates was slightly lower than if you just stayed home. My ancestors crossed the plains as well and I am sure it was very difficult, but it is made out to be this super high mortality event that you were lucky to make it through. The fact is, a majority were European immigrants, and the chances were higher that they would die on the travel in Europe, the passage on the ship, up to the staging in the midwest before the trek even began. Its not cruel, but just a fact of what mortality rates actually were.

I think that the term “intentionally un-alived” as a substitute for the word “murdered” closely approaches silliness, bordering on foolishness.

@@GenerallyUnquotable Wow. Their rules essentially force you to self censor. The owners and rule-makers of these social media platforms have way too much power and control over the notion of (so-called) “free speech” and the freedom of the press. Scary. 😦

@@anitah2404These censors have way too much power. The power to censor is (in my opinion) sociopathic and psychopathic. Censorship contributes to the general sickening of society. It is interesting to me from a psychological perspective what attracts a personality type to agree to work as a censor for a social media company.

I understand your argument and have heard similar arguments. You mentioned that your perception of the pioneer history did not align with historians, something that is also common among people who decide to leave any religion or similar group. My first thought is that this trek seems to be patterned after the worst of the experiences. Many people use a similar approach, absent the religious aspect, to teach others, particularly children, gratitude for all aspects of life. I understand that it was not explicitly taught, but was it deliberately withheld? Whatever cultural pressure you felt - and young people are especially vulnerable to that pressure - do they punish people for asking or doing outside research? There are people who know these things and are not hurt or upset and I’m wondering what the difference is. I’m looking for more than the typical accusations used in these situations - cult, brainwashed, etc. People leave every religion for similar reasons. They learn that stories they grew up with, such as Rosa Parks, were “adjusted” to increase the impact. And they have to decide if the missing information erases the value of the lesson. Despite the fact that you seem to have a personal bias on the subject, you articulated your feelings and research very well. I know you added other examples that impact your feelings, but I am only asking about the trek and the methods used to emphasize how much better/different life is today. I have no problem with Rosa Parks, but many people, for reasons I do not understand feel it justifies their continued biases. We cannot go backwards, but we can improve our approach moving forward. As one who obviously had a negative and harmful experience, do you think this approach (again, specifically to,the trek) is always nefarious or are your feelings limited to this church?

Essentially they are using fear as a motivator. While fear as a motivator can cause people to perform, it simultaneously harms them. My dad kept my siblings and I under control with fear. We did what we were told and we were shiny. We were the family with the 14 kids who sat and were quiet and got straight A's and looked perfect. AND we have so much trauma. We also learned to lie and to hide because we were afraid. Did I get a full ride scholarship to college because I performed...yes. Have I gotten every job I've applied to because I know how to perform...yes. I also have massive anxiety and no contact with my parents and siblings and I doubt myself constantly (to name a few things). Love is a much better motivator. In my current family system with my husband and kids...we are trying the love route and it's so different. It will be hard articulate in a youtube comment but I am living it and I'm telling you it's quite magical, not because it's easy but because our value is connection instead of control. Instead of telling my kids "people died on the plains so you better obey or their suffering was in vain" I can allow them experiences that teach them what hard work feels like, I can allow them to make mistakes (in a safe environment) when they are young and the price is relatively small. That way, they want to do what's right and what works for them because they know what mistakes feel like and how to make better choices and because they know they have a safe place to land if they need help. Fear will get people to do things. It will. And the world will continue on, bathed in trauma. Love will also get people to do things. It absolutely will. And when I imagine a world filled with people whose value is connection and love instead of fear and control, that's a world I want to live in.

When you seek answers from the Book of Mormon instead of the Bible, God can't help you because you have turned your back on Him. Therefore this leaves the door open for Satan (II Corinthians 11:14-15) to step into your life with a false christ or prophet showing you signs and wonders to lead you away from the real Jesus of the Bible who is God the Son 2nd person of the Trinity. God Himself warns us about this in MATTHEW 24: 23-24 "Then if anyone says to you, Look, here is the Christ! or There! do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect..." Mormons teach and believe that their jesus is the brother of Satan, which contradicts what God says in His Bible that Jesus is God the Son 2nd person of the Trinity and the Eternal Creator God. So Mormons, which Jesus do you believe in? A. Your jesus of the Book of Mormon, who is the brother of Satan. OR B. The Jesus of the Bible, who is God the Son 2nd person of the Trinity and the Eternal Creator God.
