@@GenerallyUnquotable it’s interesting. I find Mormons in Canada a lot more quiet than Mormons in the USA. Here in Brampton we honestly never hear about the one LDS church here. I hope they’re not afraid to interact with us.

@@GenerallyUnquotable may I ask is that still common? Or is that changing?

@@CanadianAnglican I think it's common and it's sorta encouraged. I spent so much time at church and doing church things that I didn't have so much time to make other friends. Plus, if I had non-mormon friends my only job was to convert them (and people can tell when they are a project).

Gawd, did I hate seminary ... as always, thank you 😇

I did release time seminary and thought if I was diligent enough I’d get called into the seminary presidency during high school. I didn’t know it was actually only the popular kids who got called and I didn’t have a chance no matter how many scriptures I memorized.

I have a grand-child who attends early morning seminary, and who is constantly exhausted. People experiencing sleep deprivation are more easily manipulated, as are ones who are fasting.. The Morg leadership has every base covered in order to keep the members functioning as mind controlled robots

Exactly! Whether they know it or not (I think they do) they are use every play in the "how to be a cult" playbook.

I've got a nephew who is getting ready to leave on a mission. I wish, as an RM, I could talk him out of it.

That’s so hard…watching people make the same “mistakes” you did. I constantly think about past me and how I would not have listened to anyone trying to help me leave. Hopefully he finds his way out some day!

@@GenerallyUnquotable Hopefully, however, he has been born and raised in the St. George bubble. A mission may also be a chance for him to see the world with different eyes (about 1/2 of the RMs do leave the church).

@@big-daddy-o8576 yes…the mission could open his mind and heart to other people’s perspectives which often aids in freedom. Like Mark Twain said “travel is fatal to prejudice.”

I wonder if the future first presidentcy will continue to try to bury the moniker Mormon after Rusty bites the dust, or will the new prophet receive a new revelation that Jesus no longer hates the term and that it is ok to use it again. I remember a talk by church historen Cleon Skousen when he was giving a talk saying that the Savior was never called Jesus while he lived on the earth. The name Jesus is greek, and his birth name was yoshua or Joshua.

I've wondered this too. Rusty has always hated the word mormon and couldn't wait to declare it evil. Maybe the other 14 top men actually like it.

I have love/hate feelings for seminary. I hated it because I had to drive my kids there at 5:30 and 6:30am before they could drive, but I loved that my son wanted to go to be with his friends even though he didn’t have a very strong testimony. I felt in my ward that it was a safe and loving place for my son to go before he went to church, but for my older daughter it was a nightmare. We lived in Utah when my youngest went, and of course it was during school. She thought that it would be a sanctuary from school where she would feel the spirit and grow her testimony. Ha! It was just like any other class at school and kids were always on their phone and ditching. She dropped out at the end of sophomore year and then left the church senior year. If you want your kids to leave the church, move to Utah. 🤪

My family moved to Utah when I was 10 so I didn't have to do early morning like my older siblings did. My seminary experience felt like an extension of church...so much pressure to be perfect and definitely some unpleasant experiences with the other students. Utah can get intense! When my kids were very young, we lived in St. George and I saw some serious bullying right in my neighborhood friend group (all mormons). There was one woman (who I loved) that was often excluded and I honestly never could figure out why other than the other ladies thought she was too disorganized.

Remember, the term originated by those who were against the church. The church acquiesced to that for 150 years. It is entirely appropriate to pushback and insist upon the correct branding. The prophet Mormon did not die for our sins, Jesus Christ did. It is His church, not Mormon’s church.

Gordon Hinckley General Conference Oct 1990: “if there is any name that is totally honorable in its derivation, it is the name Mormon. And so, when someone asks me about it and what it means, I quietly say-‘Mormon means more good.’ “Anyone who comes to know the man Mormon, through the reading and pondering of his words, anyone who reads this precious trove of history which was assembled and preserved in large measure by him, will come to know that Mormon is not a word of disrepute, but that it represents the greatest good-that good which is of God” “Can you doubt that the word Mormon, spoken in this context, means “more good?” It means, on average, a longer life. It means, on average, a life substantially more free of pain and misery. It means more happiness. It means “more good.”

After reporting on the deaths of the two missionaries it was in extremely poor taste to follow up with only the vile offensive comment from a cousin without countering with any positive comments from the families of the two missionaries or their personal feelings from their mission. My grandfather was killed on his mission in England when I was eight years old also by a car accident. Your negative follow-up was insensitive and classless. These are real people from real families that are really in pain, and in shock and mourning. Shame on you to let your hate of the Church cloud your humanity at such a tragic time.

That cousin is a real person too with real feelings that are valid. If their feelings make you uncomfortable and you don’t want to deal with it…this is not the place for you.
