You are getting there. Nice goose. Instead of trying to lead birds at night, sit facing where you think that they will arrive with your safety off and the fiinger on the bottom of the guard. When a bird flies past lift the gun in front of the bird and fire as the butt hits the shoulder. You have to learn how to be versatile. Also try a 'Starlite' taped to your barrel. as OU's are worse than any gun at night as the left eye sees a lot of black barrel. I lost a teal at night as it went away low at dusk. On making my way back in the dark I stepped on it-what's the chances?

Not shot ducks/geese but No 8 shot ? Always thought it would be No3 or 4 . as 8 is a clay load or am i wrong ? (Im no expert) lol .
@CumbrianWildfowler11 күн бұрын
Fair question. I’m using Tungsten which is nearly twice as dense and heavy as lead. Those shots sizes you quote are typical for lead. For TSS because it is very dense and ballistically superior you can move up shot sizes to fill a denser pattern. No. 7 seems to be the popular size for geese though 8 and even 9 wallops them. It’s hard to fathom but it’s true!

That's a punchy load in the 28 . They're supposed to be easy on recoil

Out of interest as you clearly do alot of wildfowling, why no dog? Got to be the most important tool to anyone who goes fowling.

I don't agree that its the most important tool. Your fieldcraft is your most important tool. I trust my fieldcraft, persistence and kayak far more than half the people with 'gun dogs' around here. Simply having a sundog is not the answer by itself. That said I wanted to breed a retriever out of my GWP in 2024. For various reasons it didn't happen. Even then, if I had the pup wouldn't be ready for this season. I likely won't have a dog ready until 2026. Will it stop me going wildfowling? not a chance in hell. A well trained (note the well trained bit) is an asset but not essential. Its not essential because I am living proof that its not essential. Id trust my fieldcraft, persistence and kayak against most of the ill trained or non trained mutts that I see on shoot days. I also have retrieved ducks this season from the kayak that no Labrador would have safely retrieved. Does that mean I flip the coin and insist that every old codger with a Labrador should have a kayak? No. Its more nuanced than just having a dog to tick a box. Gods honest truth I have only lost two ducks this year out of quite a number now. But.. I hope to either get a pup or breed a pup in 2025.

@CumbrianWildfowler me personally I wouldn't go shooting without a dog. That my opinion and nothing against what your doing or having a pop, I enjoy the vid and look forward to them popping up every week. But you mention your kayak yes it's handy on tide flights. It looks like you shoot a flooding part of river with not much current.but what use is a kayak on a evening flight on a splash ? Let's be honest there's not much feild craft needed for that either a fed splash or some fresh flood water. As for the gwp great dogs even better crossed out to a lab they make superb working dogs. Please don't think it's me having a dig at you as it was just a general question keep the vids coming and doing what your doing 👍 from the background in some of the vids I don't think your to far from me.

@@procarper1fair enough, and I won’t argue that a dog is an asset and I will have one as soon as I can but as you know it is not like ordering up a takeaway m. It. Takes time to get one established and not having one, particularly on splashes that you mention, should not stop someone going wildfowling as those splashes can be waded unlike the estuaries. I’m living proof that you can get by without one. Just having a dog isn’t the answer by itself. There’s plenty of useless ones out there. Just go to any local pheasant shoot and half the dogs there are worse than useless. I’m better than half of them!

@CumbrianWildfowler agree a fowling dog is far different to a picking up dog on a phesant shoot.
