my Ancestral Family Heritage is from Connecticut but we had an ancestor who migrated to the South from where I grew up. Always knew there was something different about us and in my Heart I always preferred the North and the Cold. During my Army service I spent 4 years in Alaska and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I notice that a Tennessee state flag is on display - in the Army (decades ago, maybe things have changed) soldiers were not permitted to display state flags of any kind, because some southern state flags featured Confederate themes in their designs. As I recall, only United States flags were approved of for display. So are things different with the U.S. Coast Guard? If the chain of command is confident in everyone's ability to get along, without fighting over a flag, I think it reflects well on the service.

@alabamacoastie69243 жыл бұрын
I'll bet you can get that billet. Just remember, when you get to boot camp: 1. It's only 8 weeks, 2. They are working mental gymnastics with you to change your mindset from that of a civilian to that of a responder, 3. Listen carefully and do what they say to do, 4. Don't stand out for the wrong reasons or by letting it get to you, because they will pounce on that. Then real life as a Coastie starts and it's nothing like boot camp.
@mantis10_surf853 жыл бұрын
Good luck staying local on your Michigan waters, at first. Chances are you may not get Michigan your first tour. However, don’t let that discourage you. You will most likely get back to your home state/area your second tour and several tours after that.

I like the old CG uniforms better, where they just had regular black boots and pants worn over them as usual. I think its bizarre how they make them wear those tall Vietnam era looking boots and blouse their pants. Not the most conducive for day to day wear, especially on a boat.

I applied to AIM but actually did not not get accepted. I still applied to the Academy though, and got in early acceptance! AIM is a great program. I have many friends who went and some who were in charge of leading it this past summer. It definitely gives you a heads up for what to expect come swab summer! But obviously, speaking from experience, if you don't get in, don't let that deter you! There are many other awesome ways to learn about the Academy.

Thank you so much for posting this!!! I’m very interested in going to the USCGA, and videos like this are so helpful! How much time do you have to get ready in the morning? I’m in Sea Cadets (we function like a NJROTC in high school) and after 2.5 years it still takes me like at least 15 min to do my bun so I’m considering cutting it. 😂 Also is there any time/tolerance for makeup?
@erinjohnson223 жыл бұрын
During the school year we have plenty of time to do hair and yes, you can wear makeup. It just can’t be too extravagant (probably the same as sea cadets). Swab summer is a little different. You are very crunched on time but you figure it out! I wouldn’t stress too much! Some people don’t have any practice at all so you’re ahead of the crowd!

What jobs does the Coast Guard offer as an officer?
@erinjohnson223 жыл бұрын
There are a few different options. Some include working on a Coast Guard Cutter as either a Deck Watch Officer or an Engineer. Different cutters have different missions. For example, some are focused on buoy tending while others focus on drug interdiction. You can look up all of the Coast Guard Missions online. There are also ashore billets, such as flight school, cyber, prevention, global affairs, teaching at the Academy, and many others. So long story short... there are many options.
