The indicative word here is EXPLOSIVE. It was NOT a lithium battery caused "blow up". An overheated lithium battery will, most likely, break out with a super hot flame - a fire hazard to be sure, but won't reliably act as an explosive. Most likely, a small amount of "plastic explosive" set off by a special code, was the cause. This could have been achieved by adding a special circuit with the explosive contained in a capacitor's housing (just my thought).

Exploding Pagers: I am an EE. I have been using Li-Ion batteries in my designs since they came out. If they have enough charge you can short it out and it will burst in to flames. I don't see how anyway to short out those batteries with anything a pagers is made out of and make it explode. All 28k of them would have to be at full charge. So who made them? Incorporating a circuit that all of them could receive a signal at the same time. How many more are out there and who has them. Even in war that was a dirty thing to do. So actually it was a weapon of mass destruction.

I do not believe these explosions could be caused by hacking into a standard pager. I have worked with batteries for years - a small shorted battery can get very hot very quickly, they can go off with a small bang if gasses build up, usually they just burn. It could start a fire, but no way is it going to cause the sort of injuries we’ve heard about. Not only that - but how can you short out a battery with a software hack? The pagers must have had explosives in them.

I disagree with a couple of points here. First of all, this was not a indiscriminate attack. It was precision targeted to individuals in a terrorist organization. That brings up an interesting point. I agree that it looks like these devices were compromised and had explosives implanted. But think about this possibility. In stead of going "boom" someone remotely makes the battery in your phone discharge quickly enought to overheat it to the point that it catches fire. Now say they do this to you in the middle of the night. Now say that they overload your 2 phones, your spouses phone and both of you kids phones. Now you have five fires started at the same time in the middle of the night in several different places within your home. Sweet dreams.

It was a pager assembled in Hungary together with explosive and a mini detonator attached to the battery. Every pager's cell number was entered on a computer database and programmed to ring and detonate within 3 seconds. All the Israeli operative had to do was log in to the database, type in 'FIRE' then press enter. The rest is history.
