Great video. I'm trying to find information about a yacht that sank in this storm. It was an Endeavour 26 called "T.L.Sea" ? ... I can't see it in in the video, but thought you may know something.

Regarding the distance from Melbourne: I think you will find that the distance is actually 45km, as the crow flies, from the Melbourne GPO to Schnapper Point/bottom end of Main St. However, the driving distance is 59km, close to your estimation of 60km.

@buenoportero101 I agree and now many of the yachts are moved to Marthurs Cove at this time of the year. Also note that the moorings did not give was but the chain connecting the yachts broke, maybe they need stronger connecting chains. Thank you for your comment.

Hey Gavin. The black yacht in the video, "Night Raider", was rebuilt after this. It has a Facebook page titled 2Farr Yachting

If there are such storms that occur at mornington pier, I still dont understand why those yacht owners park them at another beach, my dad had his boat parked there but he moved it to sorrento pier just b4 the storm and he is never going to put it bak in mornington

In answer to your question, the Mornington harbour is a safe anchorage except when the storm comes from a specific direction (NW from memory); which occurs every few decades. It's because of the 2008 storm that the Mornington Pier was strengthened, which has improved considerably the protection from storms from the NW.
