Constitutional law experts discuss the crisis in accountability in Australian parliament
UNSW Sydney Gilbert + Tobin Centre for Constitutional Law hosted an expert panel on the current constitutional issues surrounding former Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
The panel included UNSW constitutional law experts Professor George Williams from UNSW Sydney and Professor Rosalind Dixon, Director of the UNSW Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law, and University of Sydney constitutional law Professor Anne Twomey.
The panel, moderated by Prof Dixon, discussed the crisis in accountability in Australian parliament in the wake of the former prime minister’s secretive ministerial appointments. In 2020 and 2021, Mr Morrison appointed himself to five cabinet ministries - Health, Finance, Home Affairs, Treasury and Industry, Science, Energy and Resources - without pushback from the Governor General and without notifying ministers or the public.

Thanks for the video. Great education for us laypeople. Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton and the rest of the liberal party should be made to watch it because they have made light of the situation.

That presumes that they want to learn from their mistakes, and that this wasn't done in the full knowledge that the wrong thing was done.

Incredible insights and analyses here, thanks UNSW for this video ! Also thanks for leaving the comment sections open, I really don't like that the comment sections are constantly closed across the mainstream media youtube comment sections on these videos - they keep saying it's because of the trolls and the legal responsibility a channel has for its comment sections - I think that is bullshit - When the scope of the scandal is this serious, and especially _ this secretive_, we need the youtube comment sections to be kept open to allow public expression and discussion to take place; discourse if you will. I have noticed a dramatic improvement in the quality of conversations and interactions across the various youtube channels which have been reporting on the corruption of Scott Morrison, John Barilaro, and Gladys Berejiklian in the past few years, specifically on the channels TheJuiceMedia, MichaelWestJourno, KangarooCourtOfAustralia, and Swollen Pickles among others These people - 'representatives' as they claim to be - have severely neglected the Australian people throughout the numerous natural disasters of the past years. The comment sections for these videos have played a MASSIVE role in more and more Australians learning about this corruption *long* before the mainstream institutions had the courage to even hint at what we now know as reality.

And this is what makes the commentary about what is and isn't top of conversation at the IGA insulting, short-sighted, and also very worrying for what politicians (especially on the right that believe in conservatism) are now thinking in terms of what they can get away with.

It doesn’t, we have 2 parallel systems in Australia one lawful and the other unlawful..

Very important also for the public to know in terms of judicial review actions who has the responsibility and power to administer and make decisions about particular legislative provisions at any one time, otherwise there is no public confidence in executive decision-making and the processes around it, and that this is not ultra vires.

Of all the public commentary on this topic I've seen or heard no one has asked weather or not Morrison received extra remuneration for multiple roles. Makes " Dictator Dan" seem pretty harmless.

Morrison told his church audience to not trust in governments, maybe he did this to prove how fallible it can be or to see how far he can push it.

Morrison stated in the Parliament that: “Had I been asked about these matters at the time at the many numerous press conferences I held, I would have responded truthfully about the arrangements I had put in place.” So how, in the name of God, whom Morrison apparently believes he is very close to, could just any old journalist ask him about something, which not even his own cabinet knew about, not even a Minister affected by Morrison's sneaky activities? Morrison appears to not know what truth is, even if he stumbled over it... snakes in the grass don't stumble, they just slither around obstacles.

Time for a Referendum on this , so we the Australian people can make this outrage illegal . This isnt how you get a president it's how you get a dictator .

Ample evidence the Australian Federal Legislature's organization has been operating below par for strong democratic governance, for some time. Call the Australian Government's Inquiry on what went down to enable Morrison's actions taking up multiple ministries also instigates (i) democratizing the organization itself - its collective decision-making ptogrrssion (ii) build in process at all times in line with charters Aust is signatory to - eg Human Rights International law

Its been said the idea for Scott Morrison to co minister a portfolio, did not come from SM. The idea originated from former AG Chris Porter. The idea was only for health. Could you consider speaking to that, if it was the case?

Im the opposite of you I am outraged by this . However if it'd been done publicly and had only been for health with the Covid pandemic as the reason , I would have been fine with that .
