A suedehead is someone who has shaved their head and it has started to grow back. It feels soft and bristly like suede. One of Morrissey's many homoerotic obsessions. I can almost guarantee that this song is about a boy.

I read that it was a bit of a gentle dig at Billy Mackenzie from The Associates as he did not return a favourite shirt and James Dean book he was leant.Mackenzie was known to send cryptic notes to friends and family and was starting to recede,hence the suedehead title.

For anyone who cares: This song taks about James Dean. That´s the mistery. By middle 80´s for some reason I ignore, Dean´s figure became, just out of the blue, very popular again. Posters, T shirt, pins, etc (so he came back again), wich upseted Morrissey a little bit, because his beloved Dean was just a very cool cult figure outside of Mainstream, and he would rather keep him there. So that´s it, Suedehead talks about how de dirty hands of marketing can spoil sacred things. Cheers.

"Suedehead" is almost certainly a reference to the book of the same title by British author Richard Allen, who issued a whole series of cult exploitation novels in the 1970s like Suedehead, Skinhead, Boot Boys, Sorts, Mod Rule, Punk Rock and so on... quite what it has to do with the song itself is anyone's guess, though.

I think Morrissey was trying to get more filler for an album. The lyrics are thin like the music just riding off the coattails of The Smiths to make money. Song about a groupie that hangs around that got caught reading his diary so he kicked her to the curb. I hate songs like this that treat their fans like suckers.
