I'm across the pond. I have an electronics background and had not attempted getting an Amateur ticket due to the Morse proficiency requirement. The Morse requirement was dropped in the US sometime in the 1990s. Once I became aware of it I got my Amateur license. Now that I'm in the hobby, I can SEE the numerous advantages to CW and I'm learning Morse because I actually *WANT* to.

One I used recently was called Morsle. It can be used on your phone and you can set words or a mix and different speeds

I wrote a morse tutor program back in the early 80s that slightly randomised the length of dits and dahs and the gaps in order to make it appear more like hand sent morse. Back then there were fewer keyers around though. People who sent on bug keys tended to have longer dahs too, so it had that option. It still amazes me how well CW can get through when other modes can't.

Any recommendations for good software that works with a real key and can help improve sending cw vs receiving?

I have a Morserino that has helped me quite a bit. It has touch sensitive paddles or you can use your own. It has a lot of modes, but I mostly use echo, which sends a word and you have to send it back correctly to continue. It'll do words, call signs, random, etc. I've heard of people using vband, which requires a key-to-USB interface. I haven't used it myself.

CW is digital but requires a measure of skill. The easy alternatives are the modern digital modes. No real skill but more money| Simple choice and both get the job done.

Your younger mind should be more nimble and more receptive to learning new things than the older guys. But no-one is forcing you to learn cw.

My grandson is 12 and finds CW fascinating, but there again he has a curious mind. A few of his friends are now picking it up and they are using torches. I'm not sure if they have some sinister motive.

I’m no OAP (I’m not even past 40 yoa) and CW is one of my main activities as a Ham. I love it. As Peter suggests, it takes a level of skill and commitment. Once you’ve mastered it, trust me when I say there’ll be other Hams envious of your skill.

Thanks for sharing Peter. Cw = less bandwidth, less rx qrm, less power required, simple ants, and as Pete M3KXZ qrp has found, plenty of dx with 5w. What's not to like. Learn a little each day, and give me a call, my speed is from 5 wpm to suit you. 73 to one and all .zl3xdj.
