This is a vintage MORSE STEREOPHONIC HIGH-FIDELITY AM/FM/FM-AFC RADIO TURNTABLE. It is from the late 60s to early 70s. I found this at an estate sale. It was in the basement hid among the thousands of items, I almost overlooked it. It was dirty and dusty. However, I could hear scratching noise from speakers, so I decided to give it a try to restore this old cabinet stereo.
It was fun to clean the UA-25 changer that has a drop feeler. This system is a self measure system. When the drop feeler is pushed all the way down, tonearm drops at 12", and partway down for a 10". If it is not touched at all, it drops at 7". Totally different system from Magnavox system.
Enjoy!!

I bought a stereo very like this one from Western Auto as a 19 year old, for my first apartment. (1963) I paid $2.25 down and $2.25 a week. It was $99. on sale, I paid for it with tips. I loved that little stereo, and I love what you did with this one. Thanks for sharing.

I have a Montgomery ward airline console stereo to fix. The stereo came from a Restore store. The stereo is in very good condition. The stereo came with the instructions, schematics, and the original sales receipt. Console has an 8 track player and BSR changer. With my luck the belt on the 8 track will be torned to tar just like every other 8 track player I ever got I'm going to replace all the electrolytic capacitors so it can preform at it's beast. My main stereo is a 1968 Sears Silverton console stereo which was had all the electrolytic capacitors replaced and has had the record changer serviced and that was done by person I bought it from.

I have been working on Webcore Hi-Fi console record player from the mid-late 50s and I got it at an auction for $1. The turntable has been cleaned,relubracted, rubber drive tire rebuilt, and new cartridge installed. The amp has had all of the old wax paper caps replaced and the controls cleaned. I still have to install the new speaker crossover capacitor and put the amp back in the cabinet. Then I can test console record player. The Webcore Hi-Fi console record I'm working on has 3 speakers one of them being a 6 by 9 and other two being a 4". The record changer is a Webcore magci mind and it has neat feature that allows to stack both 12" 33 1/3 rpm and 7" 45 rpm records on the spindle and change the speed depending on the size of the record. Changer uses the feeler arm to select the size of the record and change the speed of the record.
@teddyhashee

Thank you for the great information about your Webcore stereo as well as your restoration process. It seems like your changer will touch the edge of the record to see the record size, and automatically change the tonearm dropping point as well as the speed. Well, great one!!

Ooh, I have a console just like this in the house, that my grandparents gave to me. The amplifier works, the radio too, but there's a little scratchy sound on the left speaker whenever it's turned on. the turntable is jammed up, but it does even have a record changer, and 16 rpm speed. Maybe in the future I'll give a go at restoring it!

A little suggestion for future videos, maybe you can add some commentary during or between the sped up parts? Those little speakers look nice too, the little wizard cones inside the main cone increase the frequency responce, so it's fairly hifi even without tweeters in the cabinet. -Mika

I have a Sears Silvertone 8054. The AM/FM sounds great but the record player doesn't work. The record won't lower to the turntable and the turntable won't spin. I'm guessing a deep cleaning like this will be a good start.

Hi, Rachel. Most turntable changer will be easily repaired by removing old dried out grease, and applying new oil and grease. Some of the parts of your turntable changer is frozen because of this dried up grease. Take a time and enjoy restoring your precious Silvertone.

It looks beautiful. The only thing I would have probably done different was replace the power cord, just because you had to cut a couple pieces off because of the insulation breaking down over time. Those disc/knob/lever things, with tabs only at the edge, on the 1960s BSRs look quite awkward to use, especially for the speed selector. But at least it still had record size sensing in those years, especially with such a simple design. I can't imagine they saved much money by adding a selector and removing the drop feeler.

@efandmk3382
@efandmk3382 6 жыл бұрын
Vintage record players do have a problem with skipping on newer (post 1978) records. They all do. It's about the older cartridges' compliance level, not about the changer itself. You can play old records on new turntables, but not vice versa. Unless your record collection consists only of original prints of old records, you should steer clear of vintage equipment. New turntables are readily available and not all that expensive. Modern audio amps do not usually have a 'phono' jack anymore, so there are turntables now that have the pre-amp so you can just plug it in to a standard "AUX" jack. If you have a turntable without a pre amp, you can just buy a pre amp to put between the turntable and the amplifier.

I rescently purchased a ‘71 Morse cabinet that looks similar to this one, just without the tuner. The turn table seems to function, but very little sound is coming out of the speakers. I love the unit and want to get it in working order. I’m wondering if replacing the turntable and speakers is recommended and doable. Or should I just stick with what is inside and give it a good tune-up.
@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 6 жыл бұрын
Before you replacing the turntable changer, you can do some test. 1) Replacing the needle. 2) Clean the volume and other controller pod with contact cleaner. At least you want to do these 2 thing in order to find out the reason why the sound is so small. Here is a link for the contact cleaner. amzn.to/2uQH27N

I have a similar console but it has a piece of decorative wood running down the front vertically, I believe it's from the late 50s or early 60s, it doesn't have a radio just has the turntable. there's no brand name found anywhere, the round tubular 45 adapter says BSR on the top, that's the only wording on the entire console. no idea how much it's worth but without a brand name on it I can't find it online. but mine looks identical to yours just older and without the radio and has that decorative piece of wood. wish I could find out more about it. it does say stereophic hi fidelity on the left side near the dials but that;s it. no brand name on the bottom or back.

You can find out the turntable changer's exact model number reverse side of the changer. There are stickers about it. The console itself, if there is no sticker on the wooden body, you need to guess from which maker made yours.

+Jesus Barron Hi,thank you for your comment. Restoring radio tuner's dial cord stringing is not so difficult, I think. Here is google search result for dial cord diagram. goo.gl/khYwVq If you see some of the pictures, you can get the idea. You want to check the spring is still ok, and thread is strong enough to hold against pulling force. Check all the pulley is in good working condition, and do not forget to turn the thread 2 to 3 times on the tuning shaft. Apply grease between needle parts and edge of the tuning panel, check the tension of the thread. If the tension is right, it won't slip. Hope you will be able to restore your Soundesign tuner. Teddy

When the main cam kicks in, it will slow down the platter speed, and it is common.

Hi, Larry. Thanks for the comment. I do not remember where I pulled this music from. Back then I was using automated music created by video editing software, and these days I use youtube creator studio's music. Anyway thanks for watching!

You really shouldn't slap the stabilizer arm around like that. Place it GENTLY on the record at the top of the spindle. It takes maybe one second more and you'll have fewer problems getting the record to stay at the top of the spindle.

Remove changer from wooden console, flip it and find model number of the changer. Go to web, search needle with changer model number. You will find it easily. Please see the picture below for the sample of changer number. goo.gl/kNUaVq goo.gl/j0ntEI

I have the exact same one as you do in the video above. Any chance you can direct me where to purchase a needle & cartridge ? I have an idea of a universal one I can use but let me know if you can. Thanks
@teddyhashee
@teddyhashee 7 жыл бұрын
You can buy cartridge either Amazon or Ebay. The old turntable uses not half inch 2 screws type but single screw mount type. So if you buy half inch cartridge, you need to have adapter for single screw mount.

If I still own this morse console stereo, I will tell you exact cartridge and needle info. However, I already sold it, so I can not see the cartridge as well as needle for this one. But you can always find your own cartridge and needle by yourself. Best way is find vintage cartridge from ebay. But as you said universal cartridge will be fine unless you have or create adapter for the half inch cartridge. I believe you know that there are different mount type of cartridge. For the vintage and for this one, you need half inch type but not p-mount type. The half inch type needs 2 screws to attache it to the shell. However, vintage one tend to have only one screw to hold cartridge. Look these pictures. goo.gl/25tPpd goo.gl/Qi3lDA So if you want to use these days universal cartridge to the vintage tonearm shell, you need an adapter. Check these photos. goo.gl/VJG8jb goo.gl/Yqbi2g goo.gl/gRS8Kp goo.gl/25uRSp You see the clear plastic one, that will work as adapter between cartridge and shell. Create by yourself or find it online. I saw somebody who own the online shop was selling different type of adapter for vintage tonearm shell, that for the vintage music box record player if I am correct, but it should work for vintage turntable too. Here is a ebay listing for vintage cartridge goo.gl/B5M8iW universal cartridge from ebay goo.gl/cnzBii Hope you understand my point. Teddy
