Fun fact, unlike the other Jakks TV games which were either programmed by HotGen or Handheld Games, the Mortal Kombat Jakks TV Game was programmed by Digital Eclipse who also brought us Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Dragon's Lair on Game Boy Color which played like the lazerdisc game, as well as other game compilations released today.

Fun video! Tiger games were always a different animal (haha), and gamers back then knew to expect it. You got the Tiger version of something if you couldn't afford the others, typically. Gameplay notwithstanding, I was always impressed by how Tiger portables and their primitive LCD ilk managed to create reasonable games with just ONE screen of static images. There's a certain type of artistry and creativity in conveying a playable experience with images that can only ever occupy one spot of the screen, and squeezing them all in on a tiny display (often reusing the more abstract shapes to create entirely different forms). It's something I think folks really have taken for granted.

PS2 version don't belong on the list as it came 10 years after the original, but could have been mentioned at the end of the video. It's like comparing all 1990's Doom versions vs the modern remaster who would easily win over the originals. There wasn't much porting in early 1990's. Games were mostly made from ground up on each system back then by different teams and is partially why they are different on all systems even if they had similar hardware. You could make the game on Amiga and Atari ST at the same time and end result would be different.
@ccfgameplay
@ccfgameplay 10 ай бұрын
the comparison you made does not apply here because in the case of the PS2 version it is WORSE than the original, and it is a port and not just the original game being emulated on modern hardware, the code was ported to run on the PS2, and even this must have caused the input lag problems and problems with music

@@thankfulgamer2405 SNES version of MK1 is awful due to low resolution and input lag. MK2 is better on SNES than Genesis but again, the resolution is terrible but input lag is good and it looks and sounds great, though mk2 on Genesis is still pretty good. MK3/U is awful on SNES the resolution makes it a real mess. Genesis version is higher resolution and smoother. Too bad they never tried it on the 32X that'd have been close to perfect I think. MK2 should've been a 32XCD version. Finally, the Saturn should've used a Rom/Ram cart to perform a perfect translation of UMK3. Dreamcast was lacking dedicated developers as the Saturn was, they could've been much better consoles if others had taken the time to fully understand and utilize they're capabilities. R. I. P Sega consoles. 😢 ... My thoughts nonetheless.
@ccfgameplay
@ccfgameplay Жыл бұрын
I agree with you, I just think they didn't think about this possibility because 32x came out in late 94, and they were even developing MK3 at that time, but if they did, it would have the potential to be a great port! A 32X CD version wouldn't be a financially sound idea because only 3 million Mega CDs sold worldwide, sales of the 32x probably hadn't even reached half a million at that point, there's no telling how many people owned both systems, more than likely very few. But with those numbers it tells you exactly why there were only a few Games released that are 32x CD games. Saturn UMK3 with a ram or rom cart? Sure, why not? although the port we got was pretty awesome tbh

I get what you're saying re: SNES version. However, individual context is often important here. I, for one, didnt have access to an Arcade version in the day and immediate access to footage etc just didnt exist. So I wasn't cross referencing it directly against the arcade back then (re: gameplay) I was in 1st year high school when i got this for SNES and my best friend got the MD release. And, although I take on board comments about responsiveness and censorship, the MD version looked horrible, had almost no animation (which affects gameplay but in a different way imo) didnt sound as good overall (that Matt Furniss title theme tho) and overall just felt like a sloppy mess. BUT WAIT! It has poorly digitised gore intact which enabled civilisation to overlook all of it's other flaws 😂. Comparatively I really liked the SNES release. I only just played the MegaCD release this year though and was really impressed by it 👍

First of all thank you very much for your comment!... My story was different, I had contact with MK1 from the arcades right when it was released, I spent countless coins on it, and the first port I played at the time was the SNES one, and I thought it was very bad, some combos didn't work, there was an input lag...when I played the Genesis version, I thought the graphics were pretty ugly, but the gameplay felt right. The following year when MK2 came out I was there again in the arcades and when the Genesis port came out I asked my parents for it, when I got it I noticed that it also had its differences, it was a certain disappointment too, but not the same as I had with the SNES MK1

What about the PC CD version with the arcade music? That was also released in 1993 like the Nintendo and Sega versions but was better than them. It was the closest port of the arcade at that time. Sound effects and voices also sounded the same as the arcade and the courtyard and the stage with Shang Tsung on a throne had the clapping at the end of a fight, missing in the SNES and Genesis versions. The 2005 Jakks version plug and play looked decent, maybe better than the SNES version but music sounded a bit cut down from the arcade. PC version and PSP/PS2 have the exact arcade music, and Sega CD but that was a crap port with same bad graphics, some voices still missing, and stage musics not in the right order. Now you can play MK 1, 2, 3, Ultimate 3 on an Arcade1up scaled down cabinet, this year they have a deluxe model skinned to MKII with the good BOE monitor, last year they released a 30th anniversary version skinned to MK1 and it has the bad monitor with bad viewing angles.

I honestly think the Genesis version was better then the Sega CD version. Yes CD version had better sound/music and more animation but the loading times brought it down for me. Never played the handheld Tiger version but I did play the Gameboy version and that was a POS so I'll take your word for it being worse then the Tiger version. haha

Thanks for your comment! The Sega CD loadings are really boring for shure, especially in the fights against Shang Tsung. About the Tiger and Gameboy version: my first intention was to place the two tied at the last in the rank, but I still can't believe that this game boy port was sold at full price, as if it were a real playable game :D

Agree💯💯💯. Mortal Monday, September 13, 1993, was one of the best gaming days ever. Great memories.

The Genesis version was a JOKE. The graphics looked my shit, it moved too slow, the sound effects were laughable, the music was horrible.

For me, apart from the DOS and PS2 versions, all the others are pretty bad, and the Game Gear and Game Boy versions are horrible.

It's pretty unfair game gear version is clearly better than MS !
@ccfgameplay
@ccfgameplay Жыл бұрын
the graphics are exactly the same, but the resolution of the game gear is lower and that's why they look bigger on the screen, and I also felt the responsiveness of the controls are a little worse than the master system version, and the frame rate is much worse

For home consoles, SNES is closest to thr arcade in graphics, sound, and gameplay. PSP, etc., shouldn't be on the list since they're just emulating the arcade version, not a port.
@ccfgameplay
@ccfgameplay Жыл бұрын
the PSP version is a port, to be more exact: it's an adaptation of the port made for the PS2, and it's not an emulation, it has some differences compared to the original. The SNES version has very good graphics, but the gameplay is very different from the original, when I made this video I played all these versions, and I really felt this difference and as for me gameplay is a very important point, I left this version with a lower score
