To be fair, Reiko was a war orphan, whose parents died in captivity (aka he was forcibly ripped away from the warm embrace of his family) before Shao rescued him. From the sound of it, Reiko must have at least genuinely cared for his family, so to hear that Bi-Han willingly committed murder through inaction against his own father... That must have struck a nerve for him.

Reiko is a good way to right a villain. It's not all clownish evil. He has good qualities and bad ones, and a tragic flaw (born of a good ideal) that leads him to be an insoluble threat to the story. His life was been mostly war and brutality. Shao gave him purpose and a sense of belonging, direction to his anger, and for that his commander has his undying loyalty. It's probably the only thing in the realms he really has faith in. That there is honor in service to others. That he can be worthy of that honor. A good bad character can go to terrible depths, but you can still see glimpses of the cliff they fell from.

Reiko pretty much replaces Mileena as the favored adopted child of Shao (Kahn). I am excited to see scenes of him and Onaga in MK2. From the endings, Kitana and the Outworld army defeated Shao's army because many in the latter's army were inexperienced, forcing the evil general to use Onaga to overthrow Mileena, which would obviously backfire. Liu Kang wrote the destiny of Shao's ancestors fighting and imprisoning Onaga for a reason.

There is nothing wrong with a character like Reiko. We understand his undying loyalty for Shao since the man saved his life and trained him, he shows some reminiscing over his lost family and he too shares a vision of protecting outworld. Reiko is a villain with good character qualities which can be quite respectful. It is one dimensional but sometimes simple characters can have appeal. I think if Reiko had scenes of his father son bond with Shao, his differences yet some respect for Li-Mei in the story and a few wins under his belt, I’m sure he would be a more likable character by the story show casing those qualities.
