anyone could play as Scorpion. but the character of Scorpion is always defined as being this angry and pissed off character that wants revenge and vengeance for what happened to his family. now that is all gone with this new reboot. instead we have the character of Kuai Liang, respecting the honor and integrity of the Lin Kuei instead what Bi-Han wants which is personal selfish ambition. so the mantles have changed but not the core values soft the characters. these are the same characters with the same core essence but switched costumes and powers.

When the leaks were going around there were strong hints that this timelines Takeda is gonna be Hanzo. Takeda was originally the family name of a very old clan in Japan during the Sengoku Era and descended from Minamoto Yoshimitsu. I know the original Takeda was Kenshi's son who trained under Hanzo/Scorpion so there's a nice symmetry if it were to be true.

I look at Hanzo Hasashi Scorpion as an allegory. Of trauma, of grief, all PTSD in general. We saw in timeline 1 and 2 how he's killed. Bi-Han murders him. He *could* have let him live. And in the cell with Bi-Han, Hanzo, now Scorpion (I consider them almost separate) is still in grief. He's not the rage monster. At all. He's finally unleashed in the MK Tournament, and he kills Bi-Han. In MK9 it is a clear artistic representation of PTSD. His plotline's murky until 4, when he learns the truth with Quan Chi. And this is when the rage truly begins. His ending is canon in MK4, which is why Quan Chi is running out from the Netherrealm when DA begins. So at this point Scorpion's got nothing but hatred and rage. Nothing grounds him. The only being he cares about has escaped his torment, and what happens? ...And for his trouble he then gets thrown into a fucking *SOULNADO.* He's saved by literal divine intervention, promised his clan and given a power amp. MK:D Scorpion is just below MK1 Kuai Liang Scorpion. But he still fails. But he was against Shujinko... And I don't think people realize how big a feat that is to just survive. And even worse, they revived his clan as spectres. Then Armageddon comes. Skipping to MKX: This is why Scorpion and Hanzo are not the same. Hanzo is at all times suppressing the Scorpion persona. *At all times.* Which is why you hear Hanzo *and* Scorpion simultaniously after Quan Chi calls Hanzo "Scorpion." As he is saying "My name, is HANZO HASASHI" you still hear Scorpion . Because Scorpion is Hanzos trauma. it was with him until his dying day. Hanzo Hasashi dies in Scorpion's arms. And so Scorpion, having finally seen the folly of his blind rage, is told that even if they aren't the same blood, Shhirai-Ryu were still worthy. Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpoin both die in that scene. Not just Hanzo. Scorpion, as a spectre, no longer truly has purpose. Grief makes monsters. Sometimes *literal.* It only takes one bad day, like The Joker would say. I hate D'Vorah as a character and it was poorly done, but it got the point across. If you frame Scorpion and Hanzo separately, and look at it that, Scorpion, the spectre, haunts Hanzo like a bad memory. And he almost allowed Earthrealm to be destroyed because of it with Quan Chi. There's no more nuance to add to his story, Hanzo's story has been complete. Time will tell with the new one though

It's so easy to miss because of how calculated he moves. (Onaga's prophecy is basically he returns when the whole army is restored btw)

Dude there's so much in this scene to unpack. For one; Onaga's prophecy is unintentionally *paused.* Just gotta mention that. He *tries* to kill Bi-Han. It's easy to miss because of how calculated he is. The difference between Hanzo Scorpion and Kuai Liang Scorpion is Kuai Liang gets so pissed off that it reverses into calmness. This guy went from "BI-HAN I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!!!" to a calm, collected demeanor. But he *still* goes for the killing blow. There's something hilarious about that. And then kicks Bi-Han's ass *again.* LOL

You can see where Lui Kang was coming from changing the destiny of the brothers. By switching the ages of Hanzo Hasashi and Kuai Laing, you both fix the rivalry between OG Scorpion and Sub Zero AND bring both brothers closer together in hope that Kuai Laing has a more positive effect on Bi Han’s character. Very clever of the writers to make that change. I can’t wait to see what a younger Hanzo will turn out to be.

Scorpion's always been my favorite, but the fact they kept a tiny sliver of Sub-Zero in him is *beautiful.* He gets so pissed that he goes into an *ice cold* rage. I love that. Kuai Liang's a very different Scorpion, but *that is still Scorpion.* Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion are different in my mind. The spectre version of course. They're different personalities, and in fact in MKX, you actually *hear* Scorpion coming out of an alive Hanzo. It's when he's taking out Quan-Chi. It's a very subtle touch.

The defeat text agsinst Shao and Shang Tsung says they keep him as a prisoner in the fortress. The defeat text against Bi-Han says he killed Kuai. With Havik, it's interesting because he doesn't kill Kuai either. He keeps Kuai to convert him to chaos.

This version was born a Pyromancer, similarly to how other versions of Kuai Liang are born Cryomancers. Although, I believe, unlike in the original timeline, members of his family aren’t descended from Outworld natives.

I can’t help but feel that in the next game Bi-Han will manage to kill Kuai Liang and destroy the Shirai Ryu causing the Hanzo we saw in Smoke’s ladder ending to swear his allegiance to Quran Chi and become a specter and take up the Scorpion mantle

Very *hot* (ha) take incoming: Kuai Liang in this game honors the name Scorpion better than Hanzo Hasashi did in the previous ones. Let me explain. Hanzo is and always will be the origonal Scorpion, and even the *true* Scorpion. But here's the thing, Scorpion has been the poster-child of the entire Mortal Kombat franchise, and netherrealm studios since the inception of either one. But in the games, Scorpion always seemed like, just another character. He does have his own story, but so does every other character. And his was never quite as important as say, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Raiden, or even any of the main villains. Enter Kuai Liang's Scorpion in this game, and he is a tremendously important characters, and he gets to have scenes like THIS 5:33 right after beating the snot out of General Shao! This Scorpion makes good on his own name as the face of this franchise.

I know what you're getting at, but I think you're missing something. This is a *big* moment. This is when Scorpion halts Onaga's prophecy. It's unsaid, but you know it if you're a 3D era fan. Scorpion was the true Champion of the Elder Gods in MK:D. He was never just another character. He was an allegory for PTSD, anger, grief in general. Every irrational action he makes can be justified with that in mind. Quan Chi showing him that vision in MK9 is an artistic rendition of a PTSD episode. When called Scorpion by Quan Chi, he *and Scorpion* are shown to be separate. You hear them individually, which is again, a representation of trauma making people irrational. It's in plain sight, but it's easy to miss. Imagine being an Elder God, and you're *freaking out,* watching as this unfolds. And this guy goes from shackled and on his knees, to SWEEPING *everyone.* You'd want that dude on your team. If not for his love of Tomas, the story would have ended then and there. Everyone would have died.

While I disapprove of certain changes, the retcon that Scorpion and Sub Zero are brothers is one I approve of as it gives a layer of complexity and personal and emotional investment in the rivalry between the two clans.
