It really says a LOT about how Johnny had to realize that he HAD to make mistakes in order to properly learn his lessons. He needed his "bad father" phase before he owned up and became a good father to Cassie. Most people want to erase their mistakes and make things perfect. Johnny's one of the few who chose to allow some mistakes to remain, minus Sonya's death.
