Maybe the PlayStation version isn't 100% arcade perfect but it felt arcade perfect at the time of its release!! I remember staying up all night so I can get this game early in the morning on launch day, I slept in too late and it was already 10:30 in the morning so I rushed down to my friend's house and he had already purchased the game at KB Toys just before business hours. I ran back up to my house and begged my mom to drive me up to KB Toys so I could also purchase MK3 on the PS1 and it was amazing!! What a time to be a gamer!!

Oh my gosh lol! those were the days! I was doing exactly what you were doing during those times haha, although I didn't do that for this game, I did however, did that for Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy 7, Tomb Raider 2 and 3. Dino Crisis, Xenogears. Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I could go on forever Lol! Nowadays, we don't need to do that anymore, since we can now purchase games digitally. Those were good times man, good times

The current resolution arms race is killing videogames. It takes exponential increase in processing power to go from 720p to 1080p while the jump in graphics is merely evolutionary and not revolutionary. The whole ps4 generation is just lackluster. I haven't truly loved a game since mass effect trilogy or dao.
@MrAdrenaline19826 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have a PS4 but I can barely tell much of an improvement from PS3. It's nothing close to the revolutionary step from NES to SNES. Or hell, even PS1 to PS2. I don't see the point in them putting out new systems anymore, aside from making money off of people who want to play the current games. And now there's already talk of a PS5. It seems so needless. They could easily wait 5-10 more years, when there's room for some big changes, not just minor graphical improvements.
@alexhardline22085 жыл бұрын
@@zzzhuh it's not about the number of pixels, because both the PS3 and the PS4 display 1080p It's more about their power, the PS4 is capable of generating much better graphics than the PS3 (which could never handle games like the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11) So yes, each step forward truly counts, still nowadays.

PS1 version seems nearly close to faithfulness to the arcade. Only setbacks are the lower screen resolution making things look a little squashed on the PS1, the CD format causing some occasional skipping of audio/ music clips (notably during the final moment of the match when you can use a Fatality), and loading times (was especially an issue with Shang Tsung morphing into different characters since the PS1 needed to load up character graphics for use before the morphing took effect).

Interesting Japanese speech in the attract story sequences. This must be the Japanese PlayStation version. Didn't know Japanese speech ever existed in that particular version. I suppose it must have been recorded by Sony Computer Entertainment since they were the ones publishing this conversion.

This is an amazing port of Mortal Kombat 3. I remember first playing it in a Kay Bee Toys Store in the mall along with Battle Arena Toshinden. I didn't get a PlayStation until summer 1996 so I owned the Super NES port instead which was missing some animation frames and had much smaller characters, but no load times. I rented the PlayStation version right after I got my PlayStation and felt like I was playing the arcade version. NBA Jam: Tournament Edition was arcade perfect too. The 32-bit generation is when arcade ports were finally arcade perfect in most cases. It's a shame I can't find an arcade that has games like Mortal Kombat 3 anymore aside from the occasional far away "pay by the hour" "retro arcade".

Agreed. I was fortunate enough to get a PlayStation on day 1 and MK3 coming out soon was the #1 reason why I was so excited. It's not remembered as a great game but it was a system seller at the time. It was the first generation I experienced arcade perfection at home, with my first game being NBA Jam TE and MK3 and Tekken not far behind. It was an amazing time to be a gamer.

@@ultimateman55 I didn’t know Mortal Kombat 3 was considered a “failure” until many years later when I read about it on the Internet. I loved it from the first time I played it in the arcade around May 1995 right up to when Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was released in arcades in November of 1995. I was a little surprised by Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 less than a month after buying Mortal Kombat 3 for Super NES, but I was happy to experience it in the arcade nonetheless. I still think Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy are when the Mortal Kombat series peaked and I quickly lost interest in the series as soon as Mortal Kombat 4 came out in arcades in 1997. It just wasn’t the same when they went 3D and replaced all of the digitized graphics with polygons.
@gedaman2 жыл бұрын
@@fightingforce8498 The Sega Saturn version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was very well done too. I would say both Mortal Kombat 3 on the PlayStation and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on the Sega Saturn are equal to the arcade versions. In a way it is bad since the difficulty is so high. Obviously arcade games are programmed to suck as many coins out of a player as possible and the difficulty in the later parts of the game is just brutally annoying and unfair. That is the only aspect of the home console versions of any Mortal Kombat where the 16-bit Super NES and Sega Genesis versions were better than the arcade perfect 32-bit PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions. The developers altered the difficulty to be more forgiving for the 16-bit home console ports since they had to rework almost everything unlike the 32-bit home console ports. Also witness how difficult the Mortal Kombat games are in the 2011 compilation Mortal Kombat Kollection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 since they directly ported over the arcade versions.

All graphics like with pretty much every home port of MK up until the 3D versions downscale the resolution of all the graphics. I suspect the PS1 game is running at 320x240 given the way you can see more vertically than the arcade. The arcade ran at the same resolution as CPS2 which was 384x224. While it means less vertical screen resolution, the benefit was horizontally, which is where the home version's scale down is being made. Because they used red book audio instead of CDXA, they didn't have enough disc space for all of the music as the "Finish Him/Her themes are gone. Key thing to note is that every CD version of MK Trilogy had this issue too, except they even cut the aforementioned themes on last hits, probably so the MK2 music could be brought in. A few background animations are slightly less animated. Those things aside, this was pretty spot on. Arcade edges it out in clarity, but for anyone playing this at home back then this was literally the best it got.
@uptowndanram67537 жыл бұрын
Agree w/most of these sentiments, though I feel that the missing Finish Him/Her themes were more because of CD-based consoles (i.e Sega CD, Saturn, PS1, all of which had ports of MK1-3) having trouble loading these themes in a manner that didn't jack up the gameplay or introduce loading times. Probe's CD ports of MK1 & 2 were notorious for this.
@Darknight06817 жыл бұрын
UptownDanRam One could also say that was Probe's fault too. But it's mainly redbook audio's fault. Had they used CDXA they could've easily got around it because it can pull that up quicker and uses less overall memory.

Both times wrong, MK3 arcade do not run at the same res as the CPS2, all MK arcade PCBs from 1 to Ultimate run at 400x254 resolution. And Missing voice samples are due to Ram contraints rather than "no space on the CD,redbook audio thing" , CD based consoles had very limited work/video RAM, voice samples need to be loaded into the system RAM first before being sent to be "precessed" by the sound ADSP chip, Midway removed those voice samples to avoid a "RAM" loading message screen before the fatality sequences.

It's insane to think that even though the PS1 port of MK3 is solid, it's still not arcade perfect and the sprites are much smaller. We had to wait till midways arcade treasures on PS2, GC, Xbox to get an arcade perfect port of MK3.

The only really noticeable visual differences between the arcade and playstation versions of MK3 are the different colours of the night sky on the graveyard stage (arcade - dark blue, playstation - black) and the character shadows (arcade version has pure black character shadows and the playstation has transparent shadows). Both of those visual differences were made due to an artistic choice and not due to some sort of limitation of the playstation hardware.

São pouquíssimas as diferenças. É uma conversão quase perfeita. Tem que procurar muito para ver diferenças....em uma olhada rápida voce jura que é o mesmo game mas tem diferenças.. 1) O tamanho dos personagens. No arcade ele é levemente maior. No Ps1 ele apenas some.

@uptowndanram67537 жыл бұрын
It was (by Williams I believe). Sony paid Midway/Williams big bucks to churn out a PS1 port of MK3 for their launch window AND have a 6-month exclusivity for it. I recall reading in mags that Williams ported/reconfigured data directly from the coin-op for this port, and went the extra mile to improve the quality of music/sfx.

it was not like that actually, as the game was released in 1996. sony made a huge mistake with this move, as later sega paid for exclusive rights over umk3, therefore sony had to stuck with mk3, while saturn had umk3 in 1996. in addition, you are correct on them trying to improve the music/sfx, but that ended badly as well. I was new to the franchise when 3 dropped so I never really used Scorpion Raiden, Kitana or Mileena so I didn't really miss them. I was a Liu Kang main and eventually graduated to a Sub-Zero main and now, Sindel. It was just a simpler roster and the fact the PS1 has it means it is in my console frequently. Seems like either the resolution is lower on the PS1 or the sprites are slightly smaller to a negligible but noticeable degree when comparing versions.

TheCyndicate in Chicago umk3 was huge, always someone there to vs. Killer instinct was huge too.
@TheCyndicate6 жыл бұрын
LightBlue2222 likely because it was Chicago though. From Florida to Tennessee, people simply didn't like the idea of the run button. It completely ruined the mechanics of the game, as well as the feel. It went from every attack causing massive damage, to needing 1,000 attacks to cause damage. It just turned people off. At the same time, Killer Instinct did everything right.

mk2 is my 2nd fav, and I wouldn't change anything about it. It's perfect. I dont see how they could make it better. But I really enjoy the aggressive mk3 combos.
@Lightblue22226 жыл бұрын
Killer instinct has even longer and crazier combos. I remember when killer instinct gold came for n64 I completely forgot about mk. Until mk gold came for dreamcast.
@TheCyndicate6 жыл бұрын
LightBlue2222 Yes, but Killer Instinct used a pattern based combo system that also included auto hits. The combos took off significant damage. It also wasn't an established game that ruined it's original system. Killer Instinct would later accomplish that however, with KI2 and even worse, the N64 port.

On Arcade the characters are bigger and graphics look better and the sound quality is better.

MK3 was a first generation PS title. There was a lot of room for improvement, especially when it came down to encoding. But they never remastered games back then like they do now.

@WeskerSega7 жыл бұрын
Cierto.

At that time, Sony had to misspell Raiden's name due legal restrictions and issues at the time. There were some legal claims about his name back then if i recall.
